Assignment 4

I remember in the early to mid-90’s the word information super highway was the buzz word. I was very young and clueless when I started hearing about the information super highway. I understood the terms highway and super, however I didn’t get the totality of what an information superhighway encompassed. The business dictionary defines information superhighway as "Internet-type global network of computers that, potentially, will connect most of world's individuals, firms, and organizations. It is envisioned to provide very high speed access to information in all forms (text, graphics, audio, video) via a telephone or wireless connection. The term was first used in 1985 by the 45th US Vice President (1993-2001) Al Gore (born 1948) in an American context where every citizen is aimed to be so connected". As a kid, I hardly knew what a personal computer was, but I was kind of familiar with a word processor. I became a little familiar with the Apple computer because of a work study program that I was involved in. Based on the information I had at that time, I thought a computer was something that you stored information solely for an individual’s use.

While I was familiar with using my computer at work to interface with other departments within the organization, I had no idea that the electronic information system would one day be an absolute necessity in my everyday life, both at work and in my personal life. I didn’t know that I would rely so heavily upon information technology to further my education or to continue stocking of my professional tool bag. I felt very lucky that I was introduced to information technology at a young age. Because of that introduction, I was able to test some of the new technologies after they developed. This worked to my advantage, because I soon learned that the…...

How Academic Experience Prepares You for College and Reaching Career Goals

...How academic experience prepares you for college and reaching career goals The key to a child striving to obtain a degree is for his or her parents to really teach the importance of having one. Getting a degree is probably the only thing that I look at totally different as the years has passed. My parents were real old school and they didn’t come from a family of scholars so I was not really pushed in that direction. They made sure I did well in grade school but all I really was told was to get a job. All children should be explained how better life will be for them and their children if they get that degree. I realize it now but I’m not in the situation I would be in if I started fresh out of high school. More opportunities would’ve been available because I would be more mobile. I have children now but back then I didn’t have any. I could have easily moved to another state if I needed to do that for my career. The long term results and values of completing a degree is a sense of accomplishment. Some people do it to make their family proud. Some may do it so that they can personal see their achievements. Whatever pushes and drives you to reach for the stars is positive motivation. When you get a degree you stand a better chance at getting hired for jobs. Once you get hired it doesn’t stop there. With that degree you will get looked at for promotions versus someone who doesn’t have one. The biggest difference that a degree makes once you start working in your career of......

Goal Line Technology

...Goal Line Technology Today I’m going to talk to you about a subject that has been on every football fans mind; Goal Line technology. This has been a long burning argument which keeps on surfacing after key incidents in crucial games. E.g. if Frank Lampard’s goal had counted in the 2010 world cup, would England had won that game and ultimately would they of won the world cup? We don’t know because the goal didn’t count. After that major incident, highly ranked football officials are putting their vote forward for the new goal line technology. The English FA are considering testing the new technology in the Premier League and they want to see if it’s successful or if it’s a waste of FA funding. This new technology has come too late for some football fans as their football teams has suffered from unsatisfactory referee decisions. There is only one major advantage of the goal line technology; it could tell if the ball has crossed the line. This is good as it eliminates all of the controversial decisions in the 90 minutes and there won’t be any complaints by the major clubs, as the technology should be 100% accurate and the FA conducted a numerous amounts of tests. However there is already a problem; In the professional Football Leagues, there is not going to be any technology even though there is still controversy and that has annoyed the lower league clubs. Also there is the cost side effect of the new technology as Fifa are charging a whopping £15000 just to install the...

How Technology Has Affected Our Communication

...How Technology Has Affected Our Communication I chose an article from The New York Times about how technology affects communication between children and their friends. Some parents believe the advancement in technology is good because it allows their children to build stronger and closer friendships. Children have instant access to text messaging, instant messaging, Facebook, and other social networking. This allows children to talk to their friends constantly about whatever comes to their mind. Yet, other parents believe their children need face-to-face interaction with their friends. When children are using the social network, they miss out on social cues like facial expressions and body language. Some children in the younger generation cannot even read social cues because they have never been exposed to them. I am not against children learning about our increasing technology because I think it will be beneficial to them later in life, but as children, I think more face-to-face interaction should occur. Like we talked about in chapter one, communication can easily be misunderstood. Two really good friends could be communicating through text messaging, and one could easily misinterpret what the other one was saying. This could cause unnecessary tension in friendships that would have never occurred if they were having this conservation face-to-face. More than likely, the receiver would have been able to read the senders body language in this example. After......

How Technology Has Affected Our Lives

...How Technology has Affected Our Lives Technology has certainly changed the lives of many people in today’s world. According to several reviews, as well as several books written by Nicholas Carr tend to point us in the direction of the technology not being such a good thing. While there are many forms of technology that are used for many different things such as: digital TV, social networking, cellular phones, notebooks, laptops, personal computers and the list goes on are they taking us away from the realities of life? Many sources or authors have their versions of how the different technology has made improvements in our lives; as well as how they are making us think and do a lot less than we used to. The internet makes getting information on any subject so easy for us that sometimes we tend not to do the work, or research that is needed to fully understand what we are doing; instead we follow the instructions and if we need it again we go through the same process without ever learning how to complete the task. This is just the beginning of how technology changes our lives and perhaps we get things done, but are we really learning? This is the question that we hope to answer along the way. There are many ways in which technology has in fact changed lives; the first concern that will be addressed is the way in which technology mainly electronic media has caused changes to occur. When we think of electronic media for this purpose we will focus on television,......

Goal Line Technology

...advancement of technology has had a huge impact on a global scale in the last 20 years. Many things have improved drastically because of this advanacement; wether it be space travel or sending an instant message to your friend. Among those sectors who have benfeited is sport. With the advancement of IT in the sports sector, sports is now enjoyed on a global basis through the countless dedicated sports channels throughtout the world. Such of the magnitude of viewers sports comands, it remains an integral part of our society. The new technology available to sport not only affects the number of viewers but also athlethes, coaches, trainers, referees and many more. One advantage of technology in sports is the use of software to assist the referees in making important decisions in a match situation. A case study I will look at is the use of 'goal-line technology' in soccer. It can be described as ''a method used to determine when the ball has slightly crossed the goal line with the assistance of electronic devices and at the same time assisting the referee in awarding a goal or not.'' (Wikipedia). A chip is planted inside the playing ball and is linked to a device on the referees wrist. When the ball triggers the sensors on the goal line by crossing the goal line, it will triggger a signal that is sent to the referees device on their wrist. The referee then is sure the ball crossed the line for a goal, and this elimnates the human error factor in awarding goals in soccer.......

How Education Will Enhance Future Goals in Life

...Southeastern Council on Military Education “How will my education enhance my future goals in life?” Submitted by Ellis Agee Jr. SSgt/USMC University of Maryland University College From the time that I could understand the English language, I have always remembered hearing in one way or another about the benefits of education on one’s life. Whether it have been watching a Hooked on Phonics commercial, playing with letter/number blocks or watching reading rainbow or Sesame Street on television, it seems like the basis has always been on the importance of learning new things. Virtually every job I have ever held or position I have worked in, required some form of education to complete the task. Whether this requirement was a high school diploma, in the case of military enlistment or on-the-job training on how to complete administrative tasks as a brand new Marine, education has always been of the utmost importance. According to Achieve Inc. (2012) Jobs that required limited skills--but still paid a family-supporting wage--have disappeared and increasingly have been replaced with jobs that require higher levels of education. The reality is that high school graduates that lack additional education/training face mostly dim and dead-end career prospects. Prospects are much dimmer for those who fail to finish high school at all. From my experiences thus far, I have seen first-hand just how essential education is for all people. As a Marine Corps recruiter......
