10 ways IT wastes money on development
Date: June 29th, 2009 Author: Justin James

To deliver value, IT departments must keep a tight rein on how they use their budget - and that includes development efforts. Justin James cites some of the most common areas where IT throws its development bucks down the drain.

Many IT departments walk a fine line between being a needed cost center, a necessary evil, and an absolute money pit. In a few rare occasions, they’re able to deliver enough value to become profit centers. One of the key factors in determining whether an IT department is delivering ROI has to do with the development efforts occurring within that department. Here are 10 of the most common ways IT departments waste money on development.

1: Communication problems
Communication issues are one of the biggest causes of project failure. These issues are magnified with internal projects. Just because the “customer” works in the same building and has their paychecks signed by the same person as you doesn’t mean there won’t be communication problems. In fact, internally facing projects are often worse than projects for paying customers because internal customers don’t have to adhere to a contract, and no tangible value is placed upon the work. In these situations, there is little incentive for the customers to work well with you, and if communication breaks down, they complain about how “IT is stonewalling us.” The result is wasted time and money due to things being delivered late, delivered wrong, or not delivered at all.

2: Process issues
To the rest of the company, internal IT is like the nephew you can order to come mow the lawn when needed. This is no way to run development projects. All too often, the IT department eventually tires of it, tries to establish some sort of process to put on the brakes, and gets initial buy-in from leadership. Then, when…...

10 Ways to Avoid a Heart Attack

...10 Ways to Avoid a Heart Attack A heart attack is known as a myocardial infarction. This occurs when the heart muscle is damaged or does not receive enough oxygen. Many cardiac related problems occur due to blockages in arteries that carry purified blood away from the heart to different parts of the body. Another cause is the formation of blood clots. Very often, it is quite difficult to differentiate between a heart attack and heartburn. The common signs of a heart attack are a tightness, pain, or discomfort in the chest. Sweating, nausea, and vomiting that are accompanied by intense pressure in the chest. A radiating and intense pain in the chest that extends from the chest to the left arm. A shortness of breath for more than a few minutes. If you have any of the above you must consult the doctor or go to the emergency rooms. If you even think you are having a heart attack you must call for a cardiac care ambulance, and put under your tongue a sorbitrate or chew an aspirin. If you are allergic to aspirin don't take one. At the hospital care will include rapid thrombolysis, cardiac catheterization, and angioplasty. They will also administer intravenously clot busting medications. The risk factors for a heart attack include: smoking, diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, hypertension, family history of heart diseases, atherosclerosis, lack of exercise, obesity, and fast foods. Reduce the risks of a heart attack by: 1. Quitting smoking. 2. Eating healthy. Avoid fatty......

Ways of Saving Money

...Ways of Saving Money In our world everything revolves around money. Whether that means total amount of money you have or assets you own, money is main factor that decides what you can and cannot do. For example, people with lots of money can afford to splurge on things like fancy cars or exotic vacations. On the other hand people who are poor are often struggling to put the next meal on the table to provide for their families basic needs. It is often assumed that people who own nice things and go on vacations can do so simply because of the career they have of the family they were born into. This is not always the case, in fact the key to some people’s money woes can lie with the fact they do not have any money saving strategies. Three key ways to save money are: budgeting, investing, and saving. First off, an easy way to save money is with a budget system. You can set up a budget very easily by tracking how much you spend on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis, then deciding on whether the things you are spending your money on are worth it or not. For example, if someone is spending $500 per month on fast food restaurants, that is something that may need to be removed or drastically reduced from their budget. When you have a budget it is easier to see exactly where all your money is going, and also makes it easier to set aside money for the future. Next, another way to save money is by investing. Once someone knows how much money they have and how much......

The only way to stop this menace is to save electricity. So, here are 10 ways I think shall prove very effective in saving electricity... * Whenever you feel that you won't be using your computer for about 15-20 minutes, please take the efforts to switch off the computer monitor. This will slim down your electricity bill significantly. If you turn off your monitor for a minute, a bulb can be lit in some remote part of India for about 2 minutes. * Well, if you have a computer, you may also have a T.V set. 41 Smart Ways to Save Money

...41 SMART WAYS TO SAVE MONEY PRESENTED BY WWW.82INVEST.COM www.82invest.com One of the quickest ways to improve your finances is to reduce your expenses and find more ways to save money. This book is a compilation of various money saving tips that have been published over the years. 1. COMBINE YOUR CABLE, INTERNET AND TELEPHONE SERVICE. Companies now offer combined services that not only cost less, but offer the convenience of a single bill. Called a Triple Play Package (Cable, Internet, and Phone), these combined service deals can save you a bundle. 2. SLOW DOWN YOUR INTERNET SERVICE. I went to the slower internet service option with my cable company and saved $15 per month. And I haven’t noticed a difference when surfing the Net. 3. CONVERT TO A GAS WATER HEATER. They are more efficient and will save you money in the long run. 4. REFINANCE YOU MORTGAGE. If you can reduce your interest rate by one percent or more, it is often beneficial to refinance. This is particularly true for those with high rates due to less than stellar credit scores. If your score has improved, you may qualify for a better rate. I would start by asking your current mortgage lender about lower rates. 5. GET YOUR BOOKS AND DVDS FROM THE LIBRARY. I love books and read every day. While I buy some of the books I read, most come from the library. Simply put, it’s hard to beat free. Many libraries now have movies on DVD that can be checked out. If your library offers this service,...

When Money Get S in the Way

...Kevin Perez Unit 2 Research Paper 1 Problem Solving Thur AM When Money Gets in the Way They say money makes the world go round, but does it. Money is a current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes, in other words we use it to buy things. I have a problem with money, maybe because I don’t have much of it, but this same problem exists among billions of people around the world. The problem may be that someone has not gotten the proper education, maybe someone is born in a part of the world were resources are scarce, maybe there are too many people for too little things to work on, or maybe the problem is money itself. There are studies and ideas still today from top thinkers and revolutionaries like Thomas Paine whos ideas led the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence who believed that the government was the solution to our problems, to Friedrich Hayek the Austrian economist and philosopher who believed that the government was actually the problem. These ideas have always come across our minds but we never think they are capable of happening. Its an idea that can give dignity to millions, an idea that can unite politicians and accomplished what we should have accomplished a long time ago and finally get rid of poverty. A basic income. A basic income for everyone means that it would be a right, just like the freedom of speech. It won’t be a favor, it will be given to everyone unconditionally, poor or wealthy, you would have......

College Is a Waste of Time and Money

...College is a Waste of Time and Money The essay “College is a Waste of Time and Money” by Bird is an excerpt from the book The Case against College which was published in 1975. The author tells people that college is not an obligation in our life. Bird agues that college is a waste of time because the majority of college students go to college for social and economic reasons. Very few actually go to learn and have the desire to be there. And he think students were not happy at all. They felt like it was time in a jail cell. It is just a stage which is taken by a lot of teenagers who don’t even know what to do with their lives. This excerpt is clearly directed towards raising awareness among the high school graduates concerning college education, as well as the general public. I find it quite puzzling that the author of the excerpt has purposed to demonize higher education and yet she has a master’s and a bachelor’s degree from two separate universities, which points out to the importance of higher education. However, this is not true. College is a fundamental stage during someone’s life, in which we are taught the basic skills related to the field which we are interested in. Furthermore, we learn to be independent and to make new friends, who will be able to help us in the future. Bird argues that higher education is a complete waste of time since the majority of the students attend college because of economic and social reasons. She further states that only a......

Waste

...Waste Waste is unwanted or useless materials. In biology, waste is any of the many unwanted substances or toxins that are expelled from living organisms, metabolic waste; such as urea, sweat or feces. Litter is waste which has been disposed of improperly. Feces contain large quantities of fresh and soft texturized waste products. Waste is directly linked to human development, both technologically and socially. The compositions of different wastes have varied over time and location, with industrial development and innovation being directly linked to waste materials. An example of this includes plastics and nuclear technology. Some components of waste have economical value and can be recycled once correctly recovered. Zero Waste America defines waste as "a resource that is not safely recycled back into the environment or the marketplace." This definition takes into account the value of waste as a resource, as well as the threat unsafe recycling can present to the environment and public health.  The word 'waste' and the act of 'wasting' are human inventions. Waste doesn't exist in nature. In nature, everything has a purpose. Waste was created by humans for short-term convenience and short-term profit. Wasting results in long-term harmful consequences for both humans, nature, and the economy. Where does your waste go? Landfill As you can see from the chart most rubbish in Britain goes to landfill. We used to call landfills dumps or pits. We try to use old sandpits,......

Ten Ways to Save Money in a Recession

...Ten Ways to Save Money in a Recession 1. Reduce disposable income spending and divert to pay off high interest debt. You should NEVER maintain balances on credit cards, this is a sign of financial stupidity. It's not weakness, it's dumb to believe you have money at your disposal in the form of a 20% loan from a credit card. Reducing disposable income means eating out less, purchasing less unnecessary items such as news clothes or shoes. It means downgrading your cable package, internet, movies to movie rentals, and prime steak to hamburgers. 2. Don't try to sell your house for 2004 prices. Too many people are still in a house that they can barely afford because they are trying to sell it for more than anyone will buy it in today's market. If you can live without selling then you should wait 2-3 years before downgrading the home. Let it appreciate the value it's lost over the past 2 years. 3. Find a cheap/free living situation. Move in with your parents/relatives/friends if you can. Students may want to skip the move out stage by a year until they find a job and have a nice savings cushion. 4. Additional jobs. If time permits find another part-time job. This of course, is not necessary if you reduce your spending per month. People who get part time jobs usually want to maintain standard of living and therefore work themselves to death to pay for it. 5. Increase your savings, and with those, invest in a low market. PRices for investments are at an all time low, you can......

10 Ways to Build a Business Culture Like Apple

...10 Ways to Build a Business Culture like Apple One of the big advantages of being an entrepreneur and starting your company from scratch is that you get to set the culture, which is much easier than changing the culture of an existing business. The challenge is how to do it, and how to do it right. Why not learn what you can from companies like Apple, who are leading the way with great growth and a great culture? Jim Stengel, in his latest book “Grow: How Ideals Power Growth and Profit” chronicles a ten-year study of the world’s fifty best businesses, including Apple, and concludes that those who centered their businesses on a culture of improving people’s lives had a growth rate triple that of competitors in their categories. Here are ten culture building principles, adapted for startups from this study, that I believe have the same potential for tripling the growth and survival potential of your entrepreneurial efforts: 1. Communicate your dream and operationalize it. Mission statements tend to be narrow, business oriented statements such as “Be the leader in customer satisfaction.” Your dream and your company culture needs to be outward focused with a higher good, extending beyond the company’s financial interests. 2. Be clear about what you stand for, inside and outside your company. Your personal priorities, values, and principles set the culture. The best way to be clear about them is to regularly engage team members, customers, and suppliers. People follow......

10 Simple Way Improve English

...10 SIMPLE WAY IMPROVE ENGLISH 1. This is what most people would advise: read. Read anything and everything in English. You can read story books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, comics, English textbooks, instructions and ingredients on food packages, advertisements, etc. For story books, don’t force yourself to read something too difficult or something you know you won’t enjoy. Make reading fun! Read books that you ENJOY reading. I hate to read books that bore me too. 2. Watch English movies with subtitles. This would be my favorite way of learning English. Not only do I get to have a fun time watching the movie, I’d be learning new words at the same time and knowing how to pronounce them! Usually, you can get movies with English subtitles on DVDs. 3. Listen to English songs. Read the lyrics as you listen to the songs. Listen to your favorite songs and sing along to them. 4. Start a blog in English. This is one way for you to practice your writing. Blog on something that you love. If you are a fan of movies, start a blog and write about your favorite movies, your favorite characters, what you think could be improved in the movie, what new movies to expect next year, etc. Besides blogging, try joining online forums; engage in online chatting and more. 5. If you don’t want to maintain a blog, why not write to a pen pal? It’d be even more fun to have a pen pal from a different country! I used to write to other people from the US, Germany, Mexico, and even Yugoslavia. I......
