A Bed to Herself: An Explanation

For this assignment I had to rework my initial plan to merge two stories together, and I choose to do an imitation of “A Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe. I wanted to put a much different twist on the story, by making the main character an estranged and battered wife and mother. I knew that I wanted to imitate the short story with a woman’s prospective so I decided to look up why woman kill, their husbands specifically. Abuse came up several times. I felt like this related to the problems with domestic violence today, so that aspect made the plot more contemporary. I also wanted to make a somewhat somber plot, in the beginning and then slowly reveal how a broken woman goes mad. Her husband was the main catalyst in his own death. I hinted multiple times in my imitation that she was physically, emotionally, and sexually abused. The beginning the story is prefaced the morning after she kills her husband and then buried him beneath the floor boards, much like Edgar Allen Poe’s character did with the “old man” he murdered. She slowly goes more insane, and she ends up snapping in the end, like Poe’s character did. The comments she makes to herself after she kills her husband are almost self-satisfying, like she is content with the kill. I wanted to make the tone and mood just as eerie as Poe makes his short story. The only emotional change I made between the opposing characters was that Poe’s character felt somewhat guilty, and the main character in my story had a nervous breakdown, ripped up the floorboards, and turned into an emotional monster. This was a very interesting story to imitate, because I wanted to follow it closely, and have the same physical outcome. However, I wanted to affect the reader in a different way than…...

BB&B is able to increase its gross profit margins due to its excellent atmosphere, wide assortments, and a deep variety within most merchandise lines. Its control over SG&A expenses is partly due to the outsourcing of its dishibution centers to a third party. BB&B has opened hundreds of stores over the last few years, ranging in size from 30,000 to 80,000 square feet. Because it uses a flexible real-estate strategy, BB&B is able to stood by the shopper as she decided whether to purchase the set and even had the dishes brought to a nearby checkout so that the shopper could continue buying at the store. The sales clerk then met the shopper at the checkout to facilitate the transaction. Lava Beds

...Anna Higgins Field Trip Project G148C Lava Beds National Monument For my class field trip I visited Lava Beds National Monument. This beautiful monument is home to the Medicine Lake Shield Volcano. Medicine Lake is the largest volcano by volume in the Cascade Range. Over the last half-million years, volcanic eruptions from this volcano have created a rugged landscape of volcanic features. It is home to over 700 caves, native american rock art sites and battlefields. It is an oasis in the high desert wilderness. I started my trip by visiting the Visitor Center located off of the cave loop road where I learned about all the caves and hiking trails. Upon leaving the visitor center I hiked the Thomas Wright battleground trail. Then I visited three caves starting with Mushpot Cave a lighted cave with interpretive signs. After exploring mushpot I ventured to Sentinel Cave which is a 3,280ft cave with two entrances, smooth floors and lots of interesting features. Last but not least I explored Skull Cave a 580ft long cave with a lower level floor made of ice year around and a huge wide open feel. The visitor center at Lava Beds National Monument was very educational. As soon as I enter the building I was greeted by a Ranger who taught me all about the caves and screened me for white nose syndrome. A disease which has been affecting the bats that live within the caves at Lava Beds National Monument. I also watched the twelve minute movie shown by the visitor center before starting...

...World Bed Community organizations do much more to the community than people can see first hand. Many of these programs have the goal to create fun for the people or help with expanding one’s knowledge. These organizations are important to the community because they bond the people living within that community, it helps shaping the people and inflicting values of more value in some cases. For it to have that kind of impact in the community the organization it also has a social responsibility to be ethical and moral in the process. When these organizations have a big part in the community, some decisions down the line can impact the entire the community that in some cases can be a negative thing. The company that I am currently employed by was approached by an up and coming company that’s goal was to give back, the vision was to promote that comfort should not be expensive. After several meetings we decided we would start a 2 for 1 deal, when someone purchased a bed another bed would be donated to several different orphanages. The organizations that benefit from this are incredible and feedback is amazing. This organization is now giving people comfort, something that is sometimes taken for granted by those that have it. The movement was influenced by the lack of beds that were in the housing of some of the organizations that were just trying to help people get back on their feet. People feed off of the vibe, they have shown that there moral or more than just thinking......

...of thinking and how difficult it was for them to accept colonization. He is a Caribbean writer because he lived what these people lived. The only element that is hard to believe is the power he gives to the women in his short story. This power reflects a movement of feminism, which is a new movement in the current society. Is it truly power or is it only a way to survive? How can women survive in this story if the men don’t have money? It is only an illusion of power because women still depend on men to survive. Finally, Samuel Selvon is an excellent example of a writer that feels dislocated. With his character, Brackley, the author managed to illustrate how people don’t feel at home even when they are. Brackley lost his bed when Teena moved in and since then, he isn’t himself and his life will never be the same. This truly reflects the way people feel after been colonized. They loose their homes, their language and some of their customs. The authors of the post-colonial period have the right to denounce these injustices. They have the right to express their anger and their feelings of lost of identity. These writers represent hope. They are challenging indirectly the political system and they are being heard across the world. They have the power. The literary works that they leave behind them are always going to be there to help people understand what the people have lived and why they have moved out of their countries....

Beds and Sexuality

...Beds and Sexuality Nadia Fesz-Nguyen I recently read the article “No One is Born Gay (Or Straight): Here are Five Reasons Why” by Jane Ward and, while the main focus of the article is establishing that sexuality is more of a social construct than essential, a smaller focus in the article is that viewing sexuality as a personal choice can, in fact, be seen as valid. The night after I read the article I was climbing onto my lofted bed when I muttered to my roommate, and to myself, “Who would purposefully choose this lifestyle?” The word choice alone made my brain make a jump to sexuality. Me. I’m who. The correct answer is: Nadia Fesz-Nguyen; I chose to loft my bed. I started comparing my bed situation to my sexuality, and it ended up being a surprisingly comprehensible thought process. The specific bed setup is currently as such: the bed is lofted to the second highest point it can be, with that given frame. My desk isn’t directly under my bed but my desk chair is, and the desk is facing out towards my roommate’s side of the room, creating a den like atmosphere underneath my lofted bed. It’s inconvenient to get to the den area. I have to crouch under my mattress and avoid hitting my head on the bed frame. It’s inconvenient to go to sleep. I have to climb up the side of my bed frame, avoid hitting my head on the ceiling, and pray I didn’t forget anything “downstairs.” I deal with the inconvenience of the bed setup because of the benefits. Once I actually......

They have expanded from two stores in 1971 to over 800 stores located in 46 states and Puerto Rico. This industry is classified as highly competitive. The key players are Bed Bath & Beyond, LinensN-Things, Williams Sonoma, and Pier 1. The home furnishings industry is also comprised of discount merchandise firms such as, Wal-Mart and Target. These firms have the ability to steal some of the market share since a consumer can find a variety of items in one store, and often at a lower price. However, the key firms prosper since they have a greater variety of home furnishing products and usually more knowledgeable associates. Overall, it is difficult to enter this industry with a history of established firms. A firm must obtain a large amount of capital and resources......

Monster Under the Bed

...A. Monster under the Bed We have all tried it before – to be scared of something. The only thing that is dissimilar from our fears is the situations we are afraid of. But the feeling stays the same no matter if it is spiders we are afraid of or if it is the fear of loosing a pet. Everybody is scared of something and it is no exception in the short story “Monster under the Bed” written by Lezanne Clannachan and published in 2011. The story is about facing your fears and learning how to put your own needs ahead of others and say no if people want you to do something that is against you as a free person. Because doing something others command you to for their own good might leave you with a bitter taste and a bad conscience, which can hunt you for the rest of your life. The text is written in third person point of view, which means, that the narrator knows what the boy thinks and how he reacts. The author uses a technique, which can be described with the phrase “stream of consciousness”. The technique describes the situation by every little thought of the person, which in this case gives us a more insightful knowledge about the boy and his feelings, “She’s wearing a lot of make-up. Trying to look younger than she is. Like his mum, so careful with her make-up every morning. What’s the point? he thinks when he’s feeling mean.” (2, 32-33) We are introduced to the main character Eddie, a 15-year-old boy, who is facing needs from others like described earlier. He does some......

Explanations for Insomnia

...Describe and evaluate explanations of insomnia Short term insomnia is where some people suffer difficulties in sleeping for a short period of time, and example is days or a few weeks. Short term insomnia tends to be caused by immediate worries, such as an exam or a death in the family, noises at night, jet lag or a temporary medical condition, such as a cold. Long term insomnia which is known as chronic insomnia describes sleep difficulties lasting more than four weeks. A distinction is then made between secondary and primary insomnia. Secondary insomnia is much more common. Primary insomnia occurs when a person is having sleep problems that are not directly associated with any other health condition or physical cause such as drug abuse or medications. A person may be feeling stressed or depressed but such psychological states that are not the cause of the insomnia. It may be that the individual has developed bad sleep habits and this causes insomnia, but insomnia is the only problem. Sometimes insomnia may have had a identifiable cause but this has disappeared, yet the insomnia persists because of an exception of sleep difficulty - in their own words, the individual has come to expect that they will have sleep difficulties and these expectations lead to anxiety which then continue to cause insomnia. Secondary insomnia is when a person is having sleep problems because of something else. There is a single, underlying medical, psychiatric or environmental cause.......

Letter of Explanation

...Dear Mr. Williams,        My name is. I recently applied to Your University eager to jumpstart my learning experience in a Christian atmosphere. On October 18, 2010 I learned that I had been rejected due to my low grade point average with the previous University I attend earlier this year. I also learned that I could write a letter of explanation of why my grade point average was low.      On March 13, 2010 my mother was rushed to the hospital. After a series of tests, it was determined that she was having multiple stokes. After she was stable, she was transferred to the Neurological Intensive care Unit, where she was closely monitored.      Still in the ICU, she had an allergic reaction to the medicines used to treat the strokes, the medicines increased her heart rate to 228 beats per minute and subsequently she coded. Within 5 minutes of being revived her heart rate was 242 beats per minute and once again she coded.      After the team of doctors and nurses revived her for the second time, the Cardiologist came to me and stated, " I'm sorry, we've done all we can do." The doctor informed me she had 6-8 hours to live. I immediately began to crumble. My mother is my best friend, the thought of losing her would be devastating.      When I came back to reality it felt as if the weight of the world was on my shoulders. Funeral arrangements needed to be made, school work needed to be done, my 14 year old brother needed to get to school, I needed to work, my husband of......
