Generally speaking, agriculture has been given first priority during the transition period. The policy reforms implemented by the government have enabled Vietnam to meet its food demand and to export its rice surplus. The rice-related policies are presented briefly in Table 5.

Recognizing the situation, the first formal step toward renovation was taken in 1979, when the Sixth Party Plenum emphasized on ‘some urgent problems in the improvement of economic management.” The objective was to encourage all cooperatives to fully utilize the available resources to boost agricultural output and help overcome economic difficulties and food shortages. However, under a bureaucratic central management, the egalitarian distribution of income in the cooperatives produced a strong disincentive to farmers. ...Jack Morrison Final Portfolio Picture #10 Hard Work This picture from the portrait assignment is from my best friend Kevin Chappell doing work in his room in the dark. This picture is especially touching to me for many reasons. I wanted to definitely do a picture of Kevin for the portrait portion of the project I just didn’t know how to go about it and with how this came out I couldn’t be more pleased. Kevin is in his room with the lights off, with one light shining artificial light on his work and his face. This was the actual setting of the picture when I walked into the room so I didn’t have to mess with it too much. I did have to move the light slightly to capture the image and have the lighting where I wanted in the picture. One of my favorite parts of the image is definitely the Bob Marley tapestry you can faintly see in the background. The reason this picture is so effective is because of the stories it tells about Kevin. Kevin’s mom was diagnosed with cancer his freshman year and the entire year he struggled coping with the fact that the cancer was terminal and his mother would eventually pass away. Kevin’s mom eventually passed away in May of 2011 and it was a terrible time in all of our lives. But what this picture shows isn’t that it is what Kevin has done to better himself and this is why I love this picture so much. This year he has a 3.8 this semester and is working out everyday, rather than dwell on a loss and his going out and living his mom’s life......

...Background J.H. Stone & Sons, a cardboard container and paper products manufacturer was founded by Joseph Stone in 1926 and after World War II reincorporated as Stone Container Corporation. Early on in its conception Stone was able to grow significantly by way of acquisition. The company had a policy of paying for its acquisitions either entirely in cash or borrowing funds with early repayment. Continuing to grow, the company became publicly-owned when it issued its first 250,000 shares of stock in 1947. After its first IPO, Stone was able to widen its reach demographically. The company began acquiring even more to better diversify itself in the paper industry. By 1987 Stone had quintupled its production capacity but had borrowed heavily to do so. Stone Forest Industries, a subsidiary of Stone Container, was created to relieve some of this debt and Stone Container was able to diminish the rest. In 1989, Stone was back at it when it acquired Consolidated-Bathurst Inc in conjunction with its $3.3 billion of debt. Even with its high standing in the industry, in 1993 Stone Containers future was a shaking one; one that came down to how it would avoid defaulting on its $4.1 billion of debt. The first registered shoe was named the, “Gebruder Dassler Schuhfabrik” and that is when Mr. Dassler embarked on his mission to provide athletes with the best possible equipment. Two of the first athletes sponsored by the Adidas group were Lina Radke and Jesse Owens. Both who in fact won gold medals while sporting the brand which was the start of an evolution. In 1949, Mr. Dassler remastered his brand and moved the operation to Herzogenaurach with 47 employees. The Adidas group sponsored the German national football team in 1954 against the undefeated and undeniable Hungarians. The German national football team went on to win that game in lightweight football boots with screw-in-studs and made a mark in football pitches everywhere for the next couple of decades. The first piece of apparel offered by the Adidas group was the Franz Beckenbauer’s tracksuit, which was named after a Kaiser.
