In this 20th century the number and proportion of older persons living in the United States has increased dramatically (Falvo 2011 p.297) representing more than 26% of the United States population. These older adults, including baby boomers place tremendous demands on healthcare due to aging and pathological changes, but they also require lots of support from their professional caregivers and their own children. Studies have shown that the incidence of illness and associated disability increase with age and that over 80% of older adults suffer from multiple chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. In addition to these diseases the older adult is confronted to the normal physiological changes that occur with aging such as cognitive and sensory changes. ...Essay “Adult Education” Modern day America has the ability to provide a basic education to anyone. What does it mean to be educated? An idea of education is someone who has all the answers. It could be a person who has been through the hardship of school and has come out on top, or someone who makes a living with what they have learned. In “Adult Education” by Mortimer J. Adler, he describes how society’s education system is flawed and does not provide the best education for people. Alder speaks of how education starts at childhood and ends when they become an adult and receive their degree. To him this idea is wrong because youth have not developed the patience or the experience to be educated. Therefore, education only truly comes when a person goes through life and has become a mature adult. The value of education will never be understood by youth, but by people who have gone through the hardships of life and have gained wisdom through life experience. I believe it is also important for me to set goals, be aware of my learning style and utilize all of my educational resources and support systems. Learning the material in a way that I can apply it in real life is also key to considering myself educated. My writing style is doing or active experimentation. Active Experimentation is defined as; indicates your preference for applying ideas, using trial and error, and practicing what you learn, you probably enjoy hands-on activities that allow you to test out ideas to see what works.
