Managerial Economics Chapter 8 & 9 Applied Problems

...Week Four Assignment: Ch.8 & Ch.9 Keidra Conner BUS 640 Managerial Economics October 15, 2012 Ch.8 Applied Problem 2 2. At a management luncheon, two managers were overheard arguing about the following statement: “A manager should never hire another worker if the new person causes diminishing returns.” Is this statement correct? If so why? If not, explain why not. Yes, this statement is correct because in some cases hiring new workers can become negative and cause the marginal product to fall. The text states the managers beyond the point of diminishing returns but not to the point of negative marginal product (Thomas & Maurice, 2011, pp. 296-297). Ch.9 Applied Problems 2 & 4 2. The largo Publishing House uses 400 printers and 200 printing presses to produce books. A printer’s wage rate is $20, and the price of a printing press is $5,000. The last printer added 20 books to total output, while the last press added 1,000 books to total output. Is the publishing house making the optimal input choice? Why or Why not? If not, how should the manager of Largo Publishing House adjust input usage? No, the publishing house is not making the optimal input choice because this is not the least-cost combination of inputs. The manager should hire another printer to maximize the output at a lesser cost. This will balance the amount of inputs for maximizing production of the given output. 4. The MorTex Company assembles garments entirely by hand even though a......

The complexity of auditing and accounting functions caused by the increasing size of businesses, the globalization of business, and the complexities of business operations d. The tendency of society to accept lawsuits by injured parties against anyone who might be able to provide compensation, regardless of who was at fault, coupled with the joint and several liability doctrine e. Large civil court judgments against CPA firms awarded in a few cases, encouraging attorneys to provide legal services on a contingent-fee basis, which offers the injured party a potential gain when the suit is successful, but minimal losses when it is not. f. Many CPA firms being willing to settle legal problems out of court in an attempt to avoid costly legal fees and adverse publicity, rather than pursuing resolution through the judicial process g. The difficulty judges and jurors have understanding and interpreting technical accounting and auditing matters.” (Arens, Elder, & Beasley, 2012) 10. Chapter 8 Case Study

...Chapter 8 Case Study Scenario: An elderly woman showed symptoms of near syncope and was admitted via ambulance to a small community hospital. She experienced an inability to move on her own and almost lost consciousness while watching her grandson play basketball. Her symptoms occurred during a visit to her daughter’s home, which is approximately 150 miles from Liza’s home. When Liza was admitted to the hospital, her daughter explained the numerous types and dosages of medications her mother was taking. She also mentioned that Liza had not been taking her Coumadin as directed by her physician for the past week or so. Liza was admitted to the intensive care unit for evaluation. Over the course of hospitalization, Liza’s condition worsened. Approximately 18 hours after her admission, the nursing staff began performing nervous system checks on Liza and contacted the physician-on-call to obtain an order for a CT scan. The scan showed evidence of a cerebral infarction. Appropriate treatment for the infarction then was provided. 1) How might the student monitor the processes she has experienced? What types of data would be useful? Describe variations and possible causes of variations in the care processes? The student should monitor her living conditions and her ability to remember to take her medications on time. Her case history and number of pills dispensed and taken to see if she is compliant or not. This patient should be living in a monitored area like a nursing home or......

Actg 351 Case 2

...Case #2 Murong Feng, Duy Do, TJ Fritzgerald, Hayden Jacobs 2/13/15 Question 1 Given the facts provided for Eagle in Italy, the building is not impaired under IFRS as of December 31, 2010. The carrying value is 1,100,000, and undiscounted future cash flows are 1,150,000. The carrying value is less than undiscounted future cash flows. According to IAS36 paragraph 12, “in assessing whether there is any indication that an asset may be impaired, an entity shall consider, as a minimum, the following indications: (d) the carrying amount of the net assets of the entity is more than its market capitalization.” Thus, there is not any impairment on the building under IFRS. Question 2 Given the facts provided for Eagle in Italy, the building is impaired under U.S. GAAP as of December 31, 2010. Under ACS 360-35-17, “An impairment loss shall be recognized only if the carrying amount of a long-lived asset is not recoverable and exceeds its fair value. The carrying amount of a long-lived asset is not recoverable if it exceeds the sum of the undiscounted cash flows expected to result from the use and eventual disposition of the asset” In the case, the carrying value is 1,100,000, and the fair value is 850,000. The carrying value is more than its fair value, an impairment should be recognized. However, it is recoverable since its carrying value is less than undiscounted future cash flows. In ASC 360-35-17 “An impairment loss shall be measured as the amount by which the carrying......

Assignment #1 Chapter 8 Case: Whole Food

...Assignment #1 Chapter 8 Case: Whole Food BUS 322 Bachelor of Business Administrations Strayer University   Discuss how the basic interpersonal communication model that is presented in Figure 8.1 can be applied to the interpersonal nature of an online forum. The interpersonal communication model in figure 8.1 illustrates the key elements of interpersonal communication: the communicator, the receiver, the perceptual screens, and the message. Last month I received an overseas phone call from an ole buddy of mines. He and his family are stationed in Germany. Our phone connection was very bad. I bet we got disconnected at least a dozen times. I think everybody’s had that happen to them during a phone call. It’s the reason Verizon did their “Can you hear me now” campaign. When my phone drop that call, I knew it right then and there. I was annoyed, frustrated, and angry. Have you ever thought about why you don’t react the you do when you get disconnected? Being disconnected wasted my time. It interrupts the flow of what I was trying to accomplish, and it undermines my productivity. The bottom line is that connecting is everything when it comes to communication. In an online forum the communicator, the person originating the message still delivers the correspondences, which could be simple text, instant message or an email. I am convinced more than ever that good communication and leadership are all about connecting. According to John C.......

Case Study Chapter 8

...Case study chapter 8: Analyzing managerial decisions I think my colleagues are giving me good advice, first of all I have been thinking about moving to the country side since I want a change after living in the busy city for so long. Unless I have saved up some major money, where I wouldn’t have to work anymore, I would have to look for a new job closer to my new home or accept the fact that I will have to commute back to the city. Being able to work in the country side would solve that problem of course. The fact that land is cheap right now would seem like a good investment, even if it takes some years before the value goes up, or ethanol factories start buying up land, it is something you will have. If the facts are correct and ethanol business is growing and looking to expand in the country side this would be a great investment for you. It would allow you to live in the country while having a great business. As mentioned by your colleagues, if you would like not to get involved in this business, you could just sell the land once prices rise. Before investing in this business you would have to do some research, first of all you would have to see if the ethanol business is really going to become as successful as they say, is the government really giving funding and help for these businesses. If this is not the case, you might just want to stay away from this business at all and invest in a summer house or something on the country. You would also have to look into the......

Opening Vignette SUMMARY In today's dynamic organization, we continue to hear about management's need to be sensitive to others, for some, this is simply not part of their personality make-up, example Linda Wachner, CEO. One of the first women to become a Fortune 500 CEO. She is characterized as a screaming, combative, ruthless taskmaster known for humiliating employees in front of their peers. Her simple motto: "You can't run a company efficiently with a 'bunch of babies.' If you don't like it, leave. This is not a prison." Advice to other senior managers, be tough. Wachner is known for being smart and a good manager--and one who rewards only performance. Her record at Warnaco has been nothing short of stellar. Since leading a leveraged......
