...Adrian Lurie 12/13/11 Per. 1 Self-Evidence In 1776, the Deceleration of Independence was signed by our founding fathers. This document had been previously written to break free from the grip of Britain and become an autonomous nation. It obtained the most fundamental ideas of our country, and helped shape what it is today. The most important group of ideals in this Declaration was the self-evident truths, which stated essential laws about man and its organization. These self-evident truths of the Declaration of Independence were derived from the ideals of natural rights, an undefined Creator, and establishing government. Throughout the history of the world, natural rights have been widely believed in, and were a large factor in the creation of our country. One source that shares the ideas of the Declaration is Cicero’s De Legibus, in which Cicero wrights that man, “has been given certain distinguished status…” This directly relates to the self-evident truths, meaning that Man has been given special rights and is therefore above all the other animals. Another example of natural rights in history is the signing of the Magna Carta. The king acknowledged that he had been repressing people’s natural rights, so they created the Magna Carta to protect them. This is yet another example from which the Declaration of Independence claimed ideas. Finally, the famous philosopher John Locke, “called the new-born mind a tabula rasa, a blank slate.” He believed that all men were......

Biography

...What is a biography? A biography is a written account of the series of events that make up a person's life. Every student will write a biography at some point, but the level of detail and sophistication will differ. A fourth grade biography will be much different from a middle school-level biography or a high school or college-level biography. However, each biography will include the basic details. The first information you should gather in your research will include biographical details and facts. You must use a trustworthy resource to ensure that your information is accurate. Basic details include: * Date and place of birth and death * Family information * Lifetime accomplishments * Major events of life * Effects/impact on society, historical significance While this information is necessary to your project, these dry facts, on their own, don't really make a very good biography. Once you've found these basics, you'll want to dig a little deeper. You choose a certain person because you think he or she is interesting, so you certainly don't want to burden your paper with an inventory of boring facts. Your goal is to impress your reader! You'll want to start off with great first sentence. It's a good idea to begin with a really interesting statement, a little known fact, or really intriguing event. You should avoid starting out with a standard but boring line like: "Meriwether Lewis was born in Virginia in 1774." Instead, try starting with......

...Sheri Gualandi ECON111 Denise Stauthammer Biography November 9, 2014 Lower Gas Prices Possible Boost to the Economy The end of October 2014 brought with it lower gas prices for American consumers. It has been a very long time since gas prices have been below $3.00 per gallon at the pump and the benefits of the lower prices will help the American people from all walks of life ranging from people who live paycheck to paycheck, people on fixed incomes, and college students. The money saved from the lower gas prices will be an opportunity for people to spend more on things that may be considered little extras like dinner out, going to the movies, or taking in a concert. With the holiday months approaching, the extra money saved from not having to pay so much at the pump will allow for people to splurge and buy that special gift that they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. While the lower gas prices are helping American consumers, the oil industry is taking a hit due to the lower crude prices. These lower crude prices are also helping industries such as farmers, trucking companies, railroads, and airlines. Prices at the grocery store as well as many other retailers will decline because they will also save money with lower fuel surcharges that tend to fluctuate with the cost for fuel. Lower crude prices will also help consumers save money on home heating costs this winter which will translate into more extra spending. More spending will help our economy rebound even more...

Adrian Piper

...The on-going battle in the African American community between light skinned and dark skinned individuals is not only an issue of the present, but stretches many years back as seen in Adrian Piper’s work and lifetime struggle with her identity. With a growing number of interracial families many children find it hard to fit in with society’s expectations of black and white. Like Piper, many are looking to identify themselves but are disheartened by lurking stereotypes. All in all, it’s a problem society hasn’t overcome, but efforts such as Adrian Piper’s are educating and altering notions of the past. Piper’s racial identity issues, worsened by discrimination, began before her time when her father, a light skinned black man was placed in the segregated black army brigade only to be shunned by fellow troops men because they thought he wasn’t dark enough. As a result, Piper grew up to question her identity, not knowing where she belonged. However she later learned to defend her stance as a black woman, but along the way her enthusiasm was stifled by the constant “derogatory, insensitive behavior” she witnessed towards blacks whether they were around or not. In an effort to combat the racial discrimination, Piper turned to art as an outlet, and her photography not only helped her overcome her issues but also brought light to an overlooked societal issue. In 1972, Piper, in a series of images know as the Mythic Being progressively portrayed herself as a black man with a mustache,...
