It is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: without demands, without abrasions, without disappointments. People would have time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity. Competition would never enter in. conflict would be eliminated, tension become a thing of the past. The stress of creation would be at an end. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory in its functions. Longevity would be increased, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke caused by tumultuous endeavor. Anxiety would be extinct. Time would stretch on and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart.

Ah, how unrelieved boring life would be!

There is a strong view that holds that success is a myth, and ambition therefore a sham. Does this mean that success does not really exist? That achievement is at bottom empty? That the efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the force of movements and events now not all success, obviously, is worth esteeming, nor all ambition worth cultivating. Which are and which are not is something one soon enough learns on one’s own. But even the most cynical secretly admit that success exists; that achievement counts for a great deal; and that the true myth is that the actions of men and women are useless. To believe otherwise is to take on a point of view that is likely to be deranging. It is, in its implications, to remove all motives for competence, interest in attainment, and regard for posterity.

We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death. But within all this realm of…...

Eagle Scout Ambitions

...Eagle Scout Ambitions When I first found out I had to write a paper about my life ambitions and purpose, I thought of everything, then I scrambled through my mind to find the answer. This is what I believe; I have been striving for many years at. I’ll give the background first, and then elaborate. Computers, tech, and math seemed to always be my strong points. I first learned what a CIO (Chief Information Officer) was in a parking lot in front of a law firm while talking to my dad about what all the big C’s, you could say, are in business. I instantly knew that was what I wanted to be. I started out playing computer games like most kids that are growing up in the new tech era. That’s where I had to deal with problems that I faced and adapted to and eventually learned more about. My first computer was a Mac Book, a gift from my mom, which made my life easier. I had everything on it. I had friends that always had problems with computers, and that what gave me more knowledge. If didn’t know the answer to a problem, I never gave up till I got it right. Gaming as I can now see almost ruined my childhood. I didn’t get out much, which made me get overweight. However, what I can say about all those hours on the computer is that it made me type amazingly fast, and it gave me the inspiration to build my own computer in the 7th grade. It increased my vocabulary in a way, and it always made me strive to learn more. I learned Python Programming in the 7th grade and, like...

Blind Ambition

The company was thrived rapidly under the operation of chairman and chief executive Daniel E. Gill until early 1990s. Specifically, in 1978, B&L’s revenues were just $442 million , but over a decade its sales reached $1.5 billion. However, in early 1990s, B&L’s growth started to slow in the U.S and Europe. B&L was surpassed by rival Johnson & Johnson. Also, to boost the sales, several managers tried to extend the longer credit terms which, in return, increased receivables by 25% in 1993 to hit $ 506 million. B&L’s shares which reached 58 in 1991 dropped to about 30 in 1994. However, the biggest problem came from B&L’s Asia-Pacific division in Hong Kong where Y.H. Chan was the president. He raised sales by selling sunglasses in gray markets where the price was 10% o 30% cheaper than prices in the U.S and Europe. When the receivables hit the roof, B&L auditors started to probe and they found out that a half-million sunglasses stored in a rented warehouse. Those glasses were returned by customers and also a result of fake sales. (2) Why did such things happen? There are several causes leading to these problems but one of the most obvious cause is “Gill’s own bonus plan : 30% depended on sales growth, 30% on earnings growth, and 30% on return on equity, another earnings-related measure.......

Macbeth: Ambition, Manipulation, and a Tragic Breakdown of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays. The theme is about how one’s ambition can lead to their fall if they let it get out of hand. Lady Macbeth is one of the most aggressive and ambitious characters of Shakespeare’s plays. Much of the fame of Macbeth should be credited to her because it was her ruthless and almost man-like nature that set her apart from other women in Shakespeare’s plays. She is a round and dynamic character in this play because she changes and develops as the story’s proceedings unfold and conflicts emerge. Throughout the play, Lady Macbeth gradually changes from being driven nearly entirely by ambition, to being manipulative of her husband to get her ways, and finally to becoming the complete opposite of her once strong-willed self. Lady Macbeth is seen as a woman of ambition in the beginning of Macbeth. Upon her discovery of Macbeth’s prophecies to become king, she immediately started to think about how to fulfill them. As her ambitious and cold nature overcame her conscience, she mapped out the murder of King Duncan with Macbeth. She came off as being very strong in the opening of the play. Shakespeare’s indirect characterization of her makes her unique from other female characters in his works, which is what sets Macbeth apart from the rest. Lady Macbeth has just as much ambition driving her as Macbeth has, if not more. Lynn M. Zott writes that Lady Macbeth’s ambition may be more aimed towards Macbeth’s successes and not solely hers.......

Reflective Statement of Personal Experiences & Ambitions

...U0853052 Reflective Statement Of Personal Experiences & Ambitions New Beginnings EDS200 2014 After many years of feeling education was not for me, I decided that I was going to give it a go and go against my fear of lack of concentration. I had heard about “New Beginnings” through a friend that had advised me that, if I wanted to get back into education as a mature student “New Beginnings” would help me start that journey a lot easier. I have always had a philosophy that your experience in life will take you further than a degree, the reason why I thought like this is because, I had friends and family around me that had spent years in college to get degrees and came out finding it hard to get jobs. While I was seeing other friends and family gain jobs using experience they had gathered working in their various fields of employment over the years. I have always felt I learn quicker when it’s practical rather than when it’s theoretical, but as Hill (1937) suggests “You are the master of your destiny. You can influence, direct and control your own environment. You can make your life what you want it to be”. So I believe if I dedicate myself to finishing New Beginnings, and go on to begin the BA (Hons) Business Management Course in September there is no reason why I cannot give it my all and get back what I put in. I have worked 7 years in retail which has helped me to build and perfect my customer service skills dealing with face to face customer......

Ambition: the Key to Self-Destruction

...Ambition: The key to self-destruction Ambition is normally seen as a positive quality in an individual, but it can in fact spiral out of control. In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, readers witness this exact situation; ambition is what leads to Macbeth’s destruction. This trait can also be referred to as his hamartia. The dangerous growth of ambition begins when the witches present to him a prophecy, continues when Lady Macbeth pushes him until, finally, he has built up enough to drive himself to destruction. To begin with, the first instance in which ambition presents a danger is when Macbeth gets encouraged by the witches’ supernatural promises. After he hears the witches declare that he will be named Thane of Cawdor and “shalt be king hereafter” (I. iii. 48), a spark is lit and his darker side comes out. This is especially noticed when he says, “my thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my single slate of man that function / Is smother’d insurmise, and nothing is / But what is not.” (I. iii. 138-141). It is visible at this time that ambition is just beginning to drive him in the wrong direction and away from moral consciousness. This battle of conscious vs excessive ambition is central to the story. It is referred to by Lady Macbeth, upon welcoming Macbeth home after hearing of his title as Thane of Cawdor, when she states, “Thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but without / The illness should attend it”. (I. v. 17-19) Here,......

Ambition vs Aspiration

...AMBITION vs. ASPIRATION BY:- SIRISHA A It is said that human values do not change. But, if mutability were to be the law of life, when human thinking is at variance, values which are at cognitive level could transform. It is to be understood that in this eternal creation, uni-polarity is non-existent. Thus, ‘variance’ is in consonance with this universal law. Hence, Ambition & Aspiration, even if were to be seen as ‘diametrically opposite manifestations’, are part of us. Ambivalent thought, prior to the debate, is that both do define ‘the human spirit’. It is the context that’s the differentiator. Perhaps at the end, a bias towards one of these ‘manifestations’ might emerge from the expressions that follow. Is it appropriate to say that the world is being ‘increasingly materialistic’? It is, and it is all relativity. While we say that both positivity and negativity are part of creation, the nature always tends to settle towards a state of equilibrium. It is only that, given a particular time span & a specific geography, dominance of one of these manifestations ‘Ambition’ or ‘Aspiration’ is prevalent. It only seems that the time span is increasingly widening particularly for negativity. For a larger time span and a larger geographical area ‘ambition’ is prevailing amongst the youth. The equilibrium still is getting maintained by the manifestation of ‘aspiration’ in a lesser span of time but at an increased intensity. As an illustration of this: * In......

Ambition in Macbeth

...are still relevant today. Shakespeare Macbeth and Mark Brozel’s reworking strongly suggest that Shakespeare does write about these issues. Macbeth is a classic tragedy which is so versatile that it can be set in any context. Ambition is the most prominent theme in Macbeth. The audience sees ambition run riots in Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s mind, who try so hard to fulfil their desires, no matter what the cost is. For example, Macbeth goes from a good, loyal and honest general to a murdering maniac. This is what ambition does to a human being. It brings out the darkest of demons in a human being. “For mine own good All causes shall give away. I am blood Stepp’d in so far that, I should wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o’er”- Macbeth (Act 3, Scene 4) Shakespeare uses the technique of similes to compare Macbeth’s crimes as that of him walking through a bloody river. In this simile, Macbeth is comparing his heinous crime to wading through a bloody river. It is Macbeth’s thinking that once a man commits a murderous act for his personal gain, it is impossible to stop. Macbeth implies that turning back would be as tedious as committing the crime. In Mark Brozel’s 2005 adaptation of Macbeth, Macbeth-Shakespeare Retold, the theme of ambition is explored in a different context but with the same plot. Joe Macbeth (Macbeth) knows that he will always be over worked and under paid for his work and so does his wife Ella (Lady Macbeth). In order to eradicate this......

Macbeth Ambition Essay

...starts with a hero of scotland, named Macbeth, whom changes gradually throughout the play. The thought of being able to have so much power caused him to make some menacing decisions that caused only chaos and regret. Towards the end his whole ambition for becoming king all fall short and instead he becomes an oppressor or tyrant. In William Shakespeare`s play, ambition has brought the death of many from Macbeth. “our ambition should be to rule ourselves, the true kingdom for each one of us; and true progress is to know more, be more, and do more”.In the play, Shakespeare uses the concept of ambition to show how it affects Macbeth and his wife who thrive to reach the throne and will go through any means necessary to achieve that goal. Ambition starts when Macbeth meets three witches, who tell him his destiny as king. He then becomes obsessed with the idea of having all that power and fame. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth turn away from being honorable people to turning into murderous tyrants. He is so preoccupied with becoming king he favors power over anything, such as honor, respect, and other things knights favor, so in effect there have been countless murders and the merciless killing of innocent bystanders and witnesses. His ambition, in my opinion, is to blame for duncan's murder. Macbeth even accuses duncans kids of killing their father. The desire for power fogs macbeth's mind of humanity and mercy. For example Macbeth wants to kill Banquo and Flence for some apparent...
