Analysis of VARK Learning Strategies

“The acronym VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic sensory modalities that are used for learning information (Fleming & Mills, 1992)”. Each person learns in a unique yet definable way, and through the utilization of the VARK system, categories have been established to assist in understanding and promoting effective learning by the individual. The VARK system is based on a questionnaire where each person describes their response to a given situation, and the compilation of the answers then allows these results to place the individual within one of the four identified groups, with the addition of a fifth being an all-encompassing “multimodal learning preference (Fleming & Mills, 1992)”. The design of the program assists the learner to not only receive their identified learning style, but allows for the instruction of changes or habits that the individual may find helpful in developing their learning effectiveness.
Visual learning includes the use of printed graphs, charts, and visual comparisons by using labels, arrows, and symbols that the individual can associate with items of interest. The visual learner equates symbols and figures, and this allows them to process and retain the information more effectively. This style of learning was identified with the lowest number upon completion of the personal questionnaire.
Aural/Auditory learning involves the hearing or recitation of learned information. Hearing facts, using rhetoric, music, and group discussions are all ways that the individual in this group identifies with new information, and are the tools necessary in order to recall the reviewed material. Aural learning was identified on the personal questionnaire with the highest rating.
Read/write learning involves the written…...

...VARK Analysis Abstract The VARK Learning Styles was conducted by MS. X to describe her learning style and preferred learning strategies. The following will compare the learning strategies to the preferred learning style. It notes changes that need to be made to her study habits. Finally, it summarizes an analysis of the assessment. Learning Strategies and Styles There are four main kinds of learning strategies according to the VARK learning style and they are: visual, aural, reading, and kinesthetic. After completing a questionnaire on the VARK learning website, one is able to know the style in which they learn best and understand in which manner they can grasp what is being taught to them. Consider, for example, an artist and a carpenter. An artist paints and a carpenter is someone who builds wooden structures. Each one is skilled in his own profession, but suppose they both decide to take on each other’s tasks. It would take them longer to produce a finished work and the quality might not be as great as it would have been had they stuck to their own talents. Another possibility is also that the carpenter is capable of performing the work of the artist. In chosen plan, it might be both the talents to make one product. Learning styles may be very much similar. If you know where you are strong you can always nurture and nourish your learning capabilities and the power of comprehending the information given to you, helping you to improve your grades. ...VARK Analysis Paper Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V August 11, 2013 VARK Analysis paper VARK analysis is a method through which a person identifies his favored method of learning. VARK is the acronym for Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic. In this VARK method there is a questionnaire which a person has to complete in order to determine his/her favored learning method. The writer of this paper has completed the questionnaire and the results showed that she prefers multimodal style of learning. The multimodal learners may be called as having a universal style as 60% of any given population has this learning style (Fleming, 2011a). This paper gives the brief description of the writers learning style, lists writers preferred learning strategies, compares writer’s preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies and evaluate any change the writer need to make in the learning habits to increase learning potentiality. Summary of the preferred Learning Style This part of the paper discuses the writer’s preferred learning style which is multimodal. The multimodal learning means that the writer has multiple choices of learning. A research shows that multimodal preferences learners dominate for all populations and it is evidently the most used set of preferences when making decisions about learning (Fleming, 2011b). The multimodal consists of all the four learning methods: visual, aural, read/write, and......

Fleming developed the VARK Learning Style module in 1987, it has since become one of the most popular representations of learning strategies and continues to be used by educators and students alike to help them to distinguish their learning preferences, thus helping them to learn and retain material better. (K. Cherry) VARK was designed to be a starting place for a conversation among teachers and students about learning. VARK is an acronym for visual, auditory, reading and writing, and kinesthetic. It consists of a simple questionnaire of approximately 16 questions. How you answer these questions will determine what kind of learning style works best for you. If you are a visual learner you would rather see material presented in a visual rather than a written form. Charts, diagrams, handouts and videos are helpful to you. You use highlighters and underline things that you want to come back to. If you are an auditory learner you tend to like lectures and are able to absorb the information and remember it well. Reading out loud also helps you to retain information. You enjoy attending classes to listen to lectures, and frequently have discussions with your teacher and other fellow students. Your notes may be poor because you prefer to listen. If you are a reading and writing learner you......

...A VARK Questionnaire Analysis of an Online Nursing Student Zackary S. Stringer, RN Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V Family Centered Health Promotion November 17th, 2013 A VARK Questionnaire Analysis of an Online Nursing Student When entering the realm of online education, one must step back and ask themselves if they are truly able to step away from traditional brick-and-mortar school systems and succeed in an online learning community. One way to assess whether or not this is a possibility is through the VARK questionnaire. The VARK questionnaire was developed by Fleming and Mills in 1992 in an attempt to help students better understand the modalities in which they learn best. The questionnaire is a series of questions that present real life situations relating to learning new skills or teaching new skills to others. The four answer choices then apply to one of the four VARK modalities: visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. Those taking the VARK questionnaire are also given the opportunity to select more than one response if they feel that more than one answer applies to them. After submitting the responses, the scores for the four modalities are revealed, and then a dominant modality is given. As well, someone could be considered multimodal if they scored highly in more than one modality (Sinclaire, 2012). In the exercise that will be discussed, a twenty year old online nursing student who attended a nursing diploma school currently enrolled in a nursing......

...VARK: A Detailed Analysis of Learning Styles Randi Vance Instructor Mary Ann Bjorkman June 15, 2014 VARK: A Detailed Analysis of Learning Styles What are learning styles? According to Wikipedia, “a learning style is an individual’s natural or habitual pattern of acquiring and processing information in learning situations.” (Wikipedia, 2010) Wikipedia also notes that the core concept of learning style is that individuals vary in how they learn. (Wikipedia, 2010) Neil Fleming’s VARK Model was developed in 1987 and is now one of the most widely used categorizations of the various types of learning styles. (Wikipedia, 2010) The VARK Model requires completing a questionnaire and places learning styles into four categories: Visual, aural (auditory), read/write, and kinesthetic or tactile. ( The purpose of this analysis is to determine and evaluate the author’s preferred learning styles, preferred learning strategies, and a comparison of the author’s preferred learning strategies to the identified learning strategies according to the author’s learning style. Also, how the awareness of these learning styles, preferences, and strategies influence teaching and learning. While reading about the author’s learning styles, you may find that some of the mentioned learning styles apply to you as well. Summary of Learning Style Results: The author completed the questionnaire and got the following results: Visual: 3, Aural: 1, Read/Write: 7, and Kinesthetic: 6. The......

Within the system there are five domains for analyzing learning visual, aural, kinesthetic, reading/ writing and multimodal. According to Fleming (2011), approximately 60% of the population fits the multimodal category. This writer is among that percentage. The results of the test yielded the following information; Visual-2, aural-12, reading/writing-5 and kinesthetic-11. A review of the different learning styles and how they affect learning will be discussed in the following paragraphs. A multimodal profile can have varied combinations of two or more of the learning styles. They may have equal strength is all categories, or show a dominance in two or three of the categories. The multimodal learner can adapt and change their mode of learning to suit the learning situation or to interact with others for a positive outcome. This profile gives an individual the opportunity to use all their preferences to get a well-rounded understanding of the material to be learned or conveyed (Fleming, 2011). The visual learner uses pictures, diagrams, slides, and flow charts amongst other visually pleasing designs to take in information. Fleming (2011) suggests when studying to draw and reconstruct your lectures using pictures,......

...VARK Analysis Paper Violet Aigbe GCU Family Centered Health Promotion NRS-429V Kimberly Hare August 8, 2014 VARK Analysis Paper VARK stand for Visual, Aural, Reading/Writing and Kinesthetic. VARK Score; V=5, A= 10, R/W= 10, K=7, and learning preference is Multimodal. Neil D. Fleming (2011) developed this method to study how different individuals learn and retain information. With this method, many people are now able to know their preferred method of learning, understand what they have been taught and are able to put to practice that which they have learned. The VARK tool helps an individual to compare their preferred learning style to their own learning preference, this will help them understand and assimilate what they are being taught which will eventually facilitate their learning process. Acquiring knowledge or skill is a continued or never-ending process, so being able to identify learning style is an important asset that will propel an individual to great and successful learning experience. The goal of this paper therefore is to inform readers of the learning styles, preferred learning strategy of the writer and to compare these with the identified strategies, then appraise how the writer’s awareness of learning attributes influences the teaching and learning. Writer’s Preferred Learning Style The collection of information, processing it, retaining it and applying it sums up a learning style. The writer of this paper falls into the multimodal group......

...Learning Strategies Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion 429V September 13, 2014 Learning Strategies The VARK questionnaire was designed to better explain to students how they intake and output information in a learning type of setting. The questionnaire is 16 questions and depicts, from the users answers, the most fitting form of how they learn. Users can be visual (V), aural (A), read/write (R), Kinesthetic (K) or multimodal which means they are dominant in more than one learning preference. Multimodal Approach This writer took the VARK questionnaire and received a result of a multimodal approach to learning, as does about 60% of any population (Multimodal Study Strategies, 2011, p. 1). A multimodal style of learning can be divided into bimodal (two prominent preferences), trimodal (three prominent preferences), and quadmodal (four prominent preferences). With multimodal students, it is often necessary for them to learn things by all their preferences because if they learn just one way, they often find that they do not feel comfortable or do not retain information. Most multimodal learners like to learn in a specific way that will benefit them most for that current situation. For example, if they are signing a legal document, they “switch on” their read/write preference. If they have to learn a physical skill, they will use their kinesthetic preference (Fleming, n.d., p. 1). Preferred Strategies This writer had an equal interest...

...Vark Analysis Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS-429V Professor November 16, 2014 Vark Analysis As a way to assist teachers and students, the VARK Learning style assessment was established by Neil Fleming in 1987. The VARK assessment describes four different types of sense modes, with an extra group of multimodal students (Khanal, Shah, & Koirala, 2014). VARK stands for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic ways of learning. Those who learn by seeing things such as charts, portraits, or illustrations are referred to as the visual learners. Students who prefer to hear the information, and are able to understand it best by listening to lectures or having information read out loud to them are known as the aural learners. The read/write category students like to see words in writing, do great when they take notes and are able to read them back to themselves repeatedly. The kinesthetic learners perform great by experience and practice, they need to move around and work best with activities that are hands on and related to reality. The rest of the multimodal category is made up of students who have more than one sensory modality in combination (Khanal, Shah, & Koirala, 2014). The VARK tool gives students the information necessary for maximizing their learning needs. In this paper the author will be discussing personal learning styles, strategies for preferred learning style, and how the awareness influences teaching and learning.......

...VARK Learning Analysis December 27, 2014 Everyone learns differently not all learners are the same, each individual has a unique and complex system of thinking and learning. But knowing personal preferred learning style can increase the chance of success in school or at work and can enhance self-esteem. “Learning style varies with the personality style”. (Barman, A; Jaafar, R; & Rahim, A; 2009, p.257). Studies have shown that researchers have found various styles of learning but the most famous modal was created by Neil Fleming, an educator, who designed VARK Learning Style which increase the ability of students to improve their learning to be a successful to achieve their goals in school and in carrier which provide them an opportunity for better understand their students through VARK learning assessment. VARK learning modal identifies four basic learning styles. VARK stand for visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic. Visual style help learners by remembering things, such as facts they see with their naked eye and to remember it more lastingly. Visual style play a vital role in our everyday lives, it also helps learners to learn more effectively. Aural learning style provide an opportunity for the learner to hear attentively by utilizing his/her hearing skills and write the notes easily. They are also good at oral exams, effective listeners to information delivered orally, such as lectures speeches and oral sessions. The read/write learners prefers to take......

...VARK Analysis Paper Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion March 1, 2015 VARK Analysis Paper Every Human Being is created differently and each one has their own unique way of learning and understanding information. Learning style is different for all individuals. Charles Bonwell and Neil Fleming introduced VARK model to categorize learning styles for everyone. VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. People use different styles to learn in different situations depending on the subjects they are learning. Most people use a combination of learning style called multimodal style of learning. VARK provides people with an indication of their learning preference. There are seminars and workshops to develop skills and improve learning. This paper explains the different types of learning styles and how it can help and influence a person’s learning and understanding. My Learning Preferences My learning preference is Multimodal way of learning. In fact 60% of people prefer this way of learning style and it is one of the most used way of learning styles .while others can effectively learn using any single one of the multiple preferences. Multimodal style learning uses two or more strong preferences. This style of learning or teaching makes the learner easy to understand and capture the attention easier and make it interesting to learn. Also multimodal style can help develop better ability to learn and speed up the......

This preference is the ways in which information is processed into our brain, and the way our brain outputs the information. The VARK approach considers visual (V), aural (A), read/write (R) and kinesthetic (K) preferences for learning. (Wright & Stokes, 2015, p. 62).The purposes of this paper are to discuss VARK’s different learning modes, this writer’s preferred learning styles and strategies, and to discuss how awareness of our personal learning preferences can influence how we teach or learn. Multimodal learning style Multimodal explains my brain preferred mode of learning styles. This style consists of all the VARK modalities which incorporates (V), (A), (R), and (K). Visual learners learn by looking at and producing pictures, graphs, tables, charts, and labeled diagrams. This mode could have been labeled as Graphic (G). Aural learners learn by listening to and participating in discussions, speeches, and question and answer sessions. Read/write learners learn by reading and writing text associated with the books, class notes, etc., and the kinesthetic learners learn by engaging in physical experiences and manipulating objects. It will also address the preferred and suggested learning styles for this writer and if knowing specific learning styles affect the perception of how teaching and learning are delivered. The Vark Questionnaire was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987 to discern why some students were able to comprehend and retain information while others were not (VARK Learn Limited [VARK], 2015). This gave way to the question, does learning preference of an individual affect the way information is received and understood? This lead to the development of the VARK Questionnaire so students and teachers alike could determine their own learning style preferences. VARK is an acronym for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic learning types, or a combination of the four types known as multimodal (VARK, 2015). Finding one’s own learning preference depends on the answers given to various questions on how one would like to receive and give information, the answers are then calculated to give a percentage to each of the four categories to determine either a single or multimodal learning preference. Each learning style can incorporate different strategies to help facilitate learning and comprehension. For example: Visual learners can use charts and graphs, aural learners......

VARK is a questionnaire that guides one’s learning and teaching style by suggesting the strategies to use (Introduction to VARK | VARK, n.d.). It consists of 16 questions that will show if an individual learns or educates more efficiently by (V)isual (i.e. pictures, videos, charts/graphs, diagrams, symbols), (A)ural (i.e. listening to lectures/tutorials, discussing topics with others/self), (R)ead/write (i.e. writing notes/essays, reading books/manuals) or (K)inesthetic/tactile (i.e. hands-on experience, field trips, experiments) sensory mode (Introduction to VARK | VARK, n.d.). Multimodal Style When an individual, such as myself, is a multimodal learner, not one single learning modality stands out, rather, the individual employs strategies from all four modalities. There are two types of multimodal learners (Introduction to VARK | VARK, n.d.). Type one uses strategies depending on the situation (Introduction to VARK | VARK, n.d.). ...Running head: V.A.R.K. LEARNING STYLE ANALYSIS V.A.R.K. Learning Style Analysis Grand Canyon University Family-Centered Health Promotion: NRS 429v Melanie Escobar, RN MSN March 11, 2012 V.A.R.K. Learning Style Analysis Introduction From the time of birth, individuals are constantly learning. Individual learning styles vary from person to person. It is essential to the education of the individual to learn the particular style of learning that best serves them. One particular analysis tool is the visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic or V.A.R.K. tool (VARK, 2011). This tool allows the individual to identify their particular learning style which will better prepare them throughout their education. My Learning Style Upon completion of the online questionnaire with scores of visual: ten, aural: two, read/write: fourteen, and kinesthetic: eight, it was determined that this student’s learning preference is multimodal. It is estimated that 60 percent of individuals belong to this class of learning styles (VARK, 2011). Being aware of one’s learning style will better equip the individual with an understanding of how to communicate and how to assimilate information which will enhance learning (Mestre, 2010, p.814). The read/write category concentrates on what is in the written word. The individual absorbs more information from books, handouts, notes or anything that can be physically seen. Visual learners concentrate on graphs, diagrams, power point presentations, and......
