Music and Lyrics: Ruben Blades
(Looking For America)
I’m searching for you, America and fear that I will not find you your footprint has been lost in the dark. (Line 4)
I’m calling you America but you are not answering me.
You have been made to vanish by those who deny truth.(Line 8)

Surrounded by shadows we deny all that’s true until there is justice we will never have peace.(Line 12)
Living under Dictatorships
I search for you and I cannot find you.
Your body tortured is nowhere to be found. (Line 16)
If one’s dream is everybody’s dream to break the chains and begin our journey
Let’s be confident
Let’s go ahead, my race,

Let’s preserve time for those to come.(Line 24)
You’ve been abducted, America
Your mouth has been gagged and today it’s our turn to bring you freedom.
I’m calling you America our future awaits us and before it dies on us we will find you.(Line 33)
I’m searching for you America.
I’m calling you America
Oh, Oh
Fighting for our race and our freedom
And we will find you among the darkness,

You’ve been vanished by those who’re afraid of your truth.
While we search for the truth
Searching for our America
Mama and papa’s dream
And it’s our turn today to set you free. (Line 43)“Looking for America” 2013. Ruben Blades website. June 19, 2013, 05:05 When listening to the lyrics of this song it reminds me of people like my mother and father who to me relate more to the familiar version of “The American Dream”. I grew up in Puerto Rico and have seen the struggles of my family to give us enrichment in life, within our home and education. For my family it has been easier to convert to the norms and values of the United States, but for others I have seen their struggles to be…...

...Because It's You/Who You Are To Me – Hyorin (SISTAR) How much more do I have to hurt to see your heart I wanted to tell you but tears are welling up This is what I’m telling you I only wait for you Because I love you (Because I love you) Because I couldn’t hold on to you Because I couldn’t stop There are so many traces of you Because to me, it’s you I want you desperately to death Because it’s only you Whatever it takes, I need to wait So will you please take a step closer to me? You know that I only have you Please don’t leave me alone Every time I see you with my sad eyes Without a word, I looked and you and smiled This is what I’m telling you I only love you Because I love you (Because I love you) You are filled in my head It is filled with memories There are so many traces of you Because to me, it’s you I want you desperately to death Because it’s only you Whatever it takes, I need to wait So will you please take a step closer to me? Lyric Censorship: Language Is Power

...Lyric Censorship: Language is Power Words create powerful emotions in all of us. They are used to express our feelings, thoughts and ideas, as well as communicate with one another. There are countless examples in history where we see language equating power. Within those examples we see people in the position of power, using this power of language to degrade their enemies and those they consider beneath them, and shape language in their favor. Music ties into language completely. The words of song lyrics convey powerful messages. As language is power, those in control seek to repress the power of this language in music, attempting to keep the power in their favor. But this attempt at censorship only gives those words even more influence and any attempt to infringe our right to free speech should be fought for to prevent its loss. The censorship of lyrics has occurred globally and can be dated back as far as music and poetry can be traced. Let’s take Asia as an example. Under the ruling of the Taliban in Afghanistan, music became a crime (Korpe, 2004). Instruments were burned, and people were severely punished for singing or creating any kind of music that was not deemed acceptable by the government. In Kabal, President Rabbani went as far as to create an Office for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, which was used to regulate the lyric of song in the favor of the government, and punish those who spoke ill towards those in power. In......

Love and Lyrics

...Jauk Introduction to Sociology 4 February 2013 Love and Lyrics What is love? Love is a journey and a risk. It is difficult to maintain and easy to mistake. It is not always simple for someone to know when they have found love. When asking the question “When do you know your in love?” there is a common response of “When you are you will know.” That is a very frustrating response; it is far from concrete and can easily drive a person mad. Love is life’s mystery that everyone wants to experience. The love song, “When a Man Loves a Woman” (1966), by Percy Sledge can just about sum up being in love and the many ups and downs in less than three minutes. The woman’s love is all he needs but she can break him and “play him for a fool” and “he’s the last one to know”. This kind of love is near slavery in the control that the woman holds over the man. The line, “She can do no wrong” proves that the man is blinded by his love. Love hurts, especially when it is one-sided. There are no limits of what a man would do when he loves a woman. When Sledge wrote this song if he was not in love at the time he definitely knew what it was like to be ruled by love for a woman. The pain that you can hear in his voice tells it all. He has been there and that love was right in-between heaven and hell. “Maybe I’m Amazed” (1970), by Paul McCartney is a very simple love song with lyrics that hold a lot of meaning. McCartney’s approach to love in this song is humble and naturally, amazed. He is shocked......

Love Songs

...Dallas Williams October 26, 2011 Love Songs Dr. Christina Fuhrmann When comparing the two different versions of this song and trying to choose one, there is definitely no wrong answer. Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald both did a wonderful job in their own right on “Love is here to Stay”. Unfortunately there is only one first dance at a wedding so in this case they can’t play both. Even though Sinatra and Fitzgerald are two very different singing styles, I think there were many similarities to the approach each singer took in singing this song. But, in this situation there were more differences than not. More differences in the two songs make it harder to pick one song to use. In Love is here to stay, the lyrics are a dead giveaway towards the attitude of love in this song. In this short song, the lyrics are describing how long love will last. Therefore the composer compared love to material things that will only be phases. Saying, this love will outlast all of those items. When comparing the two singer’s attitudes towards these lyrics while singing, I think Ella Fitzgerald did a better job of conveying with her voice the true meaning of these lyrics. As Ella Fitzgerald sang the song I could get a sense of lasting love by the tone in her voice. Her tone is somewhat laid back and she elongates words, maybe as a metaphor to show how this love is long lasting. As opposed to the approach Frank Sinatra had taken, Sinatra was to the point and had more of a......

Interpret Meanings Behind Shake It Off Lyrics by Taylor Swift

...Swift I choose this song because firstly, this song is one of the most popular song lately in America since the day it was released it was the #1 hit song on Billboard. For me personally, this song has a very catchy melody, where at first the band started of with an up-beat drum which could create a feelings of excitement. There are also a couple of repetition on the hook, 'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off So I think these repetition makes it easier for listeners to remember the song words, also the melody. Additionally, this song talks about a girl who’s brave, confident, happy and she doesn’t care about what people thinks on her. If we see from the lyrics, Taylor uses a different kinds of words in every new chorus which makes the song interesting and not boring. In some part of the song, she sings the melody into a slower and softer sound to show the feelings where she’s chill and just go with the flow of music she listens to, But I keep cruising..
Can't stop, won't stop moving.. It's like I got this music…
In my mind, saying, "It's gonna be alright.” Another aspect of this song is that, the song focuses on a person’s......

The Song

...The song "where Is the Love?" written by, Taboo,, with help of others such as Ron Fair, and recorded by the American hip-hop group The Black Eyed Peas. In this song, The Black Eyed Peas lament on various issues in the World, such as terrorism, racism, hypocrisy about the U.S. government, war, pollution, intolerance, and greed. I choose this song because as I was watching this music video, I thought that there are lots of worldwide issues that make our world disharmony and difficulty. I think the video describes nowadays world. Today the world is corrupted and vicious. There is at least a hundred murder cases in a day, happenings dealing with terrors and discrimination occur all around the world almost every second. It is easier to find hypocrisy and racism than peace and love. Furthermore, media and government highly influence people. For example, in the music video, children are playing violent games likely to act what they see in the media. Also, false information from media and government give negative images. I believe the mostly impacted for all corruptions of the world is our children, the next generation. In my opinion, people should be honest and try to make our world peaceful and lovable for our future generations. This is my interpretations of the first verse of lyrics. The question mark that appears in the intro of the song represents “Where is the love?” in the world. The first and second line of the first verse ‘What's wrong with......

...from various backgrounds came to see the show. Moreover, even true old school fans, who were 12-15 years old in 90s-2000s when they started listening Limp Bizkit visited the concert. However, fans who would be considered Newbies (just recently started listening Limp Bizkit) seemed to have a blast at the event. Everyone was ready to make the memories of a lifetime. When the curtain fell down the crowd went crazy. Forever young front man Fred Durst with his famous cap, guitarist Wes Borland with the whole body painted in black, drummer John Otto, and bassist Sam Rivers stepped on the stage. The show began. Hundreds of voices sang familiar lyrics, hundreds of feet simultaneously began to stomp, and hundreds of hands were raised up in the sky to the rhythm of Limp Bizkit's jam! Limp Bizkit played their best hits as well as the songs from the early career. Rap-metal charge of Limp Bizkit reacted with the energy of the crowd, and detonated with the two-hour blast. The sound of band’s live performance was worth of praise. It was as close as possible to the studio recordings. The volume was arranged perfectly, therefore, it was easy to hear every beat from any corner of the auditorium. There was no headache and temporary deafness as sometimes happens after the performance of rock bands. Each member of the band was worth of compliments and endless praise. There was no doubt about the mastery of Limp Bizkit. This band has gone through thousands of shows during 20 years......

Song Lyric Froxen

...เนื้อเพลง: Let It Go ศิลปิน: Demi Lovato อัลบั้ม: Ost. Frozen Let it go , Let it go Can’t hold it back anymore Let it go, let it go Turn my back and slam the door The snow glows white on the mountain tonight Not a footprint to be seen A kingdom of isolation and it looks like I’m the queen The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside Couldn’t keep it in Heaven knows I tried… Don’t let them in, don’t let them see Be the good girl you always had to be Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know Well now they know Let it go, let it go Can’t hold it back anymore Let it go, let it go Turn my back and slam the door And here I stand And here I’ll stay Let it go, let it go The cold never bothered me anyway It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small And the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all Up here in the cold thin air I finally can breathe I know I left a life behind but I’m too relieved to grieve Let it go, let it go Can’t hold it back anymore Let it go, let it go, Turn my back and slam the door And here I stand And here I’ll stay Let it go, let it go The cold never bothered me anyway Standing – frozen in the life I’ve chosen You won’t find me, the past is so behind me Buried in the snow Let it go, let it go Can’t hold it back anymore Let it go, let it go, Turn my back and slam the door And here I stand And here I’ll stay Let it go, let it go The cold never bothered me anyway… (let the music go......

Song Comparison

...“Eleanor Rigby” is very different when compared to a normal Beatles song, such as “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Usually, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and John Lennon played a variety of electric guitars while Ringo Starr played drums. In “Eleanor Rigby”, the entirety of the band is not playing their usual instruments. Starr was not even a part of the song hence the lack of drums. Harrison and Lennon instead sang harmony while McCartney sang as the lead vocalist. Furthermore, with the lack of guitars and drums, the music heard below the vocals was played by a string octet. Usually, a string quartet consists of two violins, one viola, and one cello. However, in this case, the string quartet is doubled, which means 4 violins, two violas, and two cellos, in order to create a more powerful sound. Oddly, “Eleanor Rigby” begins strongly with the chorus. While the cellos are arpeggiating, the violins and violas are playing a series of short, fast notes. While the cellos are sustained, the violins and violas are playing a brief subject that eventually returns to the tonic. At 0:14, the first verse begins with vocals and, again, short notes from the upper strings. From the lower strings, we hear a punctual, driving bass line with an occasional arpeggio. We also hear another brief subject of eighth notes from the upper strings. At 0:31, the first of two bridges begins. The violas are playing eighth notes underneath the vocals while the violins and cellos are sustained. At 0:46, the...

Explicit Lyrics

...Explicit Lyrics With a Meaning Censoring explicit lyrics from young people is a debatable decision. In some ways, it can be beneficial due to the harsh and inappropriate content, and in other ways, it could be bad to censor explicit lyrics because they could send out a powerful and meaningful message. Explicit lyrics should not be banned or censored from young people because they could send out content that means something to that person and/or to their history, or that it could mean something for an entire community or culture. Lyrics found in rap music can help someone understand and sympathize with what the rapper is feeling. If people were to stop focusing on the negatives of rap music and start looking at the positives, they would have better respect towards rap music all in all. Some songs give out so much meaning that could influence a child to feel something towards that song and relate it to their own life and act upon their life as if it is being described in the song they listen to. Explicit lyrics have been around for many years and have given out a message to those who can feel exactly what the rapper is feeling. Even though rap music with explicit lyrics have had been given a bad reputation in society, “raps popularity can be useful in opening adolescents up to being more expressive” (Wiley 1). Parents are trying to understand the concept of explicit lyrics and how they can be beneficial for their child, but in reality, they’re only paying attention to the...

...“And I can’t change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to…” Music can start revolutions. Through every decade and generation certain songs stick out that raise social awareness. The first song I remember as a child was “Paint it Black” by The Rolling Stones, when I hear this song I visually recall images of Vietnam, images from TV about the ugliness of war and fighting an invisible enemy. James Brown’s “I’m Black and I’m Proud,” brings forth images of the Civil Rights Movement and inner city youths in the 80’s used N.W.A.’s “[eff] tha Police” as their anthem to express frustrating oppression by those sworn to protect and serve. Music is our outlet, our voice, our push for change; sometimes it’s informative, sometimes it’s violent and obscene. Music is protected by freedom of speech; it can be politically incorrect, offensive but sometimes issues that need to be brought to light are done so through lyrics. “When I was in third grade I thought I was gay, ‘cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis tackled a hot topic with “Same Love” (Macklemore Lyrics "Same Love" with Ryan Lewis Featuring Mary Lambert). Homophobia is part of mainstream hip-hop and rap music. The song touches on stereotypes, politics, religion, and the social stigma of being gay. It was also the anthem for change in Washington State’s Referendum 74, legalization of same-sex marriage (Headlee). The first time I heard “Same Love” I was driving to work, it tells......

The Meaning of Independent Woman in Music

...THE MEANING OF 'INDEPENDENT WOMAN'' IN MUSIC MiA MOODY Introduction Rapper Roxanne Shanté's 1989 rendition of "Independent Woman," explored relationships and admonished women not to dote on partners who do not reciprocate or to buy into the fairytale dream that a man would always take care of them. The definition of an "Independent Woman" in the Urban Dictionary, a predominantly African American written and defined Web site, is "A woman who pays her own bills, buys her own things, and does not allow a man to affect her stability or self-confidence. She supports herself on her own entirely and is proud to be able to do so." Another depiction of independence is found in Tina Portis' video clip titled the "Deception of the Independent Woman" posted to YouTube in 2010. Portis, an entrepreneur and former single mother, offers her opinion on statistics showing 42% of U.S. black women have never been married and are "independent" because they focus on achievement, often waiting too long to compete for the small number of black men who are equal in status (Johnson, 2010). In the video, she asserts that independent women do not need a pat on the back for doing what grownups are supposed to do: pay their bills, buy houses and cars, etc. She adds that independence discourages relationships as people begin to believe they can do everything alone, so they do not need a mate. Mia Moody, PhD, is a professor of journalism at Baylor University. She is the author......
