Analysis of Intuit and Organizational Change
This paper will follow a case study regarding the company Intuit, called Conspiracy of Change at Intuit. Intuit was a successful software company that enjoyed an 80 percent market share in each of its three product lines; it was one of the few companies still left that directly competed with Microsoft and still emerged on top (Jick & Peiperl, 2003, p.5). However with the increasing popularity of the internet it recognized that it needed to innovate in order to still remain relevant, “avoiding a downward spiral meant facing up to the Net, which had huge implications for Intuit’s strategy” (Jick et al., 2003, p.6). They decided to embrace this new technology and change the way the company conducted business. The case study showed the problems the company had with innovation and delivering new services to a newly immerging customer base (internet users). Intuit’s foresight and innovation allowed the company to remain competitive in an ever changing software market. This paper will analyze various concepts and models that applied to their success through the company’s recognition for the need for modernization and a new customer base, and through its recognition for the need for cultural change and employee empowerment. The change that Intuit experienced was born out of necessity; they were faced with a drop in demand for their current products and were behind in exploiting a growing internet market. This need for innovation is categorized by Christensen (2003) as disruptive innovation which “creates an entirely new market through the introduction of a new kind of product or service” (p.133). The internet back then was a service that created a whole new competitive arena that Intuit had failed to recognize. ...From the start I took a rather conservative approach to the entire thing. I roughly made about one trade a week and even didn’t make a trade in a week at all. Granted in a market that’s down a bit to maximize my earnings that might not have been the best approaches as the market didn’t not vary a whole lot, at least for what I had invested in, but I will get to that later. As far as what I hoped to get as a rough expected return was about 5-10%. I was hoping to make some money within the game but also not expecting huge profits based on the current financial climate and the amount of trading and effort put in for my more conservative portfolio. That return I was hoping to realize in the 10-week holding period but looking at it now with a change in the climate in future months it might be more realizable in an annualized holding period. Some constraints that I took into consideration while doing this project are not very severe and don’t entail a whole lot. When I took this project on I didn’t particularly see the 10 weeks as the final see all. I did not go and put all 500,000 directly into the market even though I used most of it. It was more long term probably closer to a year but beyond that was not anything I considered or what of even wanted to do within the course of the class and project. Reality in this case works best for the learner.             The student in this case is multimodal and can easily combine two styles to ensure that they make the best out of a learning experience (Hawk, 2007) The student by combining reality or hand on learning experiences that are more physically involving then the learner will achieve more.
