Angels and Demons

...In Angels and Demons (2000), Dan Brown introduces Robert Langdon, the Harvard symbologist who would later star in Brown’s worldwide best seller The Da Vinci Code (2003). The two books share numerous characteristics. Though fictional, both novels claim to be built upon a base of researched facts. Both seek to revise aspects of generally accepted histories, especially those related to the Catholic Church and its relationship to free thought. And both books put Langdon in the middle of violent interactions among shadowy factions, clashes whose outcomes may well determine the future course of Western civilization. The two books differ in setting, threat, and focus. While The Da Vinci Code tackles ancient speculations about the Holy Grail, Angels and Demons involves more standard thriller fare. It puts science and religion into conflict by reviving the Illuminati, a secret society of scientists and freethinkers whose relationship with the Catholic Church has long been, Brown indicates, intimate, tangled, and not fully known. This secret society returns as a threat when the major church leaders are gathered at the Vatican to elect a new pontiff. Increasing this centuries-old tension is a more specific threat: the Illuminati claim to have stolen a rare sample of antimatter and hidden it somewhere in the Vatican. It is highly explosive if it comes in contact with normal matter, and it will do so when a protective magnetic field runs out in twenty-four hours. Add to this the fact......

Wal-Mart: Angel or Demon? You Decide ...

...Wal-Mart: Angel or Demon? You Decide . . . For better or for worse, Wal-Mart dominates the retail industry. With annual revenue of more than $379 billion, Wal-Mart ranked No. 1 in 2008 on the Fortune 500 list of the largest U.S. corporations. Wal-Mart is also the largest corporate employer in the nation; with more than two million people on its payroll (only the federal government employs more people). But beyond the basic facts, general agreement about Wal-Mart ends. Supporters portray Wal-Mart as a solid corporate citizen that fuels economic growth, while detractors criticize every dimension of Wal-Mart operations. The key arguments: Wal-Mart supporters: * Wal-Mart boosts the standard of living for its customers by offering a plethora of quality products at the lowest possible prices. And by forcing its suppliers to become more efficient, Wal-Mart drives greater productivity and competitiveness throughout the economy. * Wal-Mart boosts employment in every community where it operates, offering excellent opportunities from the entry level through management. Demonstrating the appeal of its jobs, a Wal-Mart that recently opened near Chicago received more than 25,000 applications for 325 positions. * Wal-Mart revitalizes communities by building stores in economically depressed areas. In an interview with PBS, Wal-Mart VP Bob McAdam cites the example of Panorama City, CA: “When we came into that location, the mall that we're associated with there......

Demons

...Dr. Patrick A. Polk Humanities 491 30 September 2013 Demons are with us every day when we sleep, eat, work and even to some extent when we are at church. The traditions that demons have to do with are in Christianity. There are other religions where “bad spirits” are talked about but, demons derive from the devil which is associated with the Christian church. The main mode of communication that was and is so important to spreading the knowledge of demons was through the Bible and films. The Bible is the oldest dissemination of demons where it talks about Jesus calling out these spirits from inside of people. Films or movies have been the most popular form in recent times. Some characteristics of a demon include: Spirits with no physical body form, they are shape shifters, can communicate telepathically or by impressing thoughts, Require certain sacrifices and offerings for survival, able to occupy bodies and objects and control them, They are imitators and impersonators(especially of Christians, God, and prophecy), and are prone to corrupt, defy, and terrorize. This spirit is important because in a way this is proof for Christianity that there is a heaven and a hell. Demons are the children of the devil, who is the prince of darkness aka hell. If there is a hell, there is proof that there is an afterlife. All demons derived from the one of the biggest mistakes of all mankind. Adam and Eve were the first to experience, a demon in true flesh. They were both told by God to eat......

Angels and Demons

...I. In my reflection paper I chose to write about Angels and Demons. According to the scriptures that angels were created instead of eternally exiting. Colossians 1:16-17 explains: “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. The time in which they were created is not clearly specified but most likely they were created during the time when God was creating the heaven as stated in Gen 1:1. Angels where created to provide, protect, and deliver what so ever God would have them to do. Demons known as the fallen angels are the enemies of God. They are under the authority of Satan and the main goal is to disrupt God’s kingdom and creation. In this paper I will provide a Theological definition, Biblical foundation and practical application on Angels and Demons. II. Angel is derived from the Greek word angelos, which means 'messenger'. In the Hebrew language angel is originated from the word Malak which translates to messenger. According to the Old Testament the prophet Malachi took his name from the word Malak. Malachi was a messenger that prophesied about the coming messenger of the new covenant. Even though angels are usually referred to as heavenly messenger, God also used humans to deliver His messages such as the prophet Malachi. “Behold, I send my messenger......

Angels

...James Coates Mrs. Kopcak English May 10, 2006 Angels Angels were a major part of ancient civilizations, but how did the whole myth about angels start and has it changed over the years? How does the past compare to today’s world? Are there different classes of angels? What are their jobs, what do their jobs have them doing? The word 'angel' comes from the Greek angelos, which itself could be considered as a translation of the Hebrew word mal'akh, meaning 'messenger', suggesting that a being responsible for carrying messages between the human world and some other realm or realms of existence, someone who is an intermediary between 'down here' and 'up there'. The origins of angels, started back in ancient Sumeria. The Sumerian society is the oldest society that has left us clear evidence of the use of a winged human motif. This evidence is in the form of stone carvings, either in the form of three-D statues or relief carvings that provide the illusion of three-dimensionality. The religion of these people was complex, embracing a wide variety of spirits and gods, but of particular interest was their belief in 'messengers of the gods', angelic forces who ran errands between gods and humans. The Sumerians also believed that each person had a 'ghost' of some sort (what we would now probably label as 'guardian angel') with this entity remaining a constant companion for a person throughout their life. After the polytheistic Semitic tribes had conquered the Sumerians around 1900...

Angels and Demons

...The discussion of good versus evil has been in debate for centuries. Within this debate the very existence of God is questioned. The movie Angels and Demons supports both of these thoughts by indicating that science is a presence in the church. The Illuminatie is a group of scientists that for centuries tries to destroy the idea of a God. They believe only in scientific fact and that there is no place in this world for faith or a God because they are unexplainable events in life. With the beliefs of the church under fire, they responded with killing members of the Illuminaties to protect their beliefs in “the name of god” This poses the conflict originally brought up, good versus evil and is there a God? If God is the ultimate good then he or his followers should never kill for the greater good of anything. However, a theist would say that without pain and suffering then there would be no virtue (Burr, Goldinger 139) If there is no virtue then the is no need for a God and no need for a group, like the church, to lead us down the path of good and wash us from our sins. The presence of evil is a necessity if you are to believe in God. As the Illuminatie’s seek revenge on the church for the injustice placed on their society they pick a time where the church is under stress from the loss of their highest leader, the Pope. The reenactment of the death of the Illuminatie members becomes a public display of evil. Pain and suffering on human beings, again, in the......

Case Study "Angels vs Demons"

...Rukhami, Case study #1 The following case study is about the most profitable investment, which should be recognized by the angels with help of different relevant and vital questions. Depending on the kind of the proposed projects, I would like to figure out the advantages and perspectives of each of them. However, I think that there are some fundamental questions to ask. It’s necessarily to be highly interested in a financial side of a project. That’s why the first questions I would ask are: “What is the estimated price to launch and maintain my investment? What is the predicted revenue? How profitable is it? How liquid is this suggestion? What is my biggest risk and how much can I loss in total?” The next step is to identify who is the potential customer, whether there are a lot of competitors or not, has this kind of business already existed before, etc. (questions to ask in every segment) Now, let’s concentrate on every proposition specifically. * Manufacture of small bottles of flavours. The flavours you can add to water or other drinks to get the taste you like. Having analyzed the detailed information about this product, I came to the point to start up my interview with clarifying “Why is it innovative?” “How much would one bottle cost?” “What would be the market price per one unit?” “Did a marketing research take a place? If yes, what are the results and what did the questionnaires show?” “Who came up with this idea and why does he/she believe in it?” “Which......

Angels and Demons

...included in the 9/11 tragedy were able to crash their plane before it reached its unknown, but surely, life-devastating destination. These were ordinary people were able to overtake armed, savagely trained terrorists. They were empowered by the hope of saving lives, which they did through their brave sacrifice. This kind of hope inspires many emotions and feelings. It allows people to convince themselves that what they want to happen will happen. This effect travels far beyond the mind. As hope strengthens ones mental ability, it allows a person to fully utilize him or herself. This hope is both a drive and inspiration. It works for positive and negative causes, but it does work to strengthen and empower a person. In the novel, Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown, several characters are empowered by hope; a hope that is the inspiration that causes people to be all that they can be. Robert Langdon, a scholar of religious symbology and professor at Harvard University, made a life changing decision based on hope. Langdon was phoned by a total stranger in the middle of the night. This stranger, Maximillian Kohler, was demanding to see Langdon in person. Langdon rejected this demand, but he soon changed his mind after being sent a fax of a dead body. Branded on the dead body was an eerie symbol both unknown and familiar to Langdon. Langdon recognized the symbol to be the symbol of the ancient brotherhood of the Illuminati. Langdon, and other Illuminati experts alike, have spent......

Practical Application of Angels and Demons

...Hindu Worldview Mildred Gates Liberty University Hindu Worldview There are a total of 900 million Hindus worldwide, making Hinduism the third largest religion. Hinduism has no founder or date of origin. While gathering information about the religion I found it to be a bit confusing and contradicting. Question of Origin In the Hindu worldview has several myths about creation.” One being that of the Cosmic Man, Purusha who was sacrificed by the Gods to create man.” (Rig Veda) It is very different from the Biblical worldview because there is only one creation account. In the Biblical worldview there is God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. In the Hindu religion they have Brahma the Creator, Lord Vishnu the Preserver, and Lord Shiva the Destroyer. Question of Identity1 In the Hindu religion they treat all living beings from animals to the tiniest creatures with great respect. “According to Hinduism animals are not inferior creatures, but manifestations of God on the lower scale of evolution compared to man, each containing a spark of divine, capable of becoming human and achieving salvation like the rest of us.” In the Biblical worldview humans are more important than animals and one reason is that we use them for food and clothing. Question of Meaning/Purpose. The purpose of life in the Hindu worldview is to perform the proper sacrifices to the Gods. The Hindu religion has four universal goals or purusharthas that shape the meaning of...

...his muscular legs were tattooed as carved pillars—his left leg spiraled and his right vertically striated. Boaz and Jachin. His groin and abdomen formed a decorated archway, above which his powerful chest was emblazoned with the double-headed phoenix . . . each head in profile with its visible eye formed by one of Mal’akh’s nipples. His shoulders, neck, face, and shaved head were completely covered with an intricate tapestry of ancient symbols and sigils. I am an artifact . . . an evolving icon. One mortal man had seen Mal’akh naked, eighteen hours earlier. The man had shouted in fear. “Good God, you’re a demon!” “If you perceive me as such,” Mal’akh had replied, understanding as had the ancients that angels and demons were identical—interchangeable archetypes—all a matter of polarity: the guardian angel who conquered your enemy in battle was perceived by your enemy as a demon destroyer. Mal’akh tipped his face down now and got an oblique view of the top of his head. There, within the crownlike halo, shone a small circle of pale, untattooed flesh. This carefully guarded canvas was Mal’akh’s only remaining piece of virgin skin. The sacred space had waited patiently . . . and tonight, it would be filled. Although Mal’akh did not yet possess what he required to complete his masterpiece, he knew the moment was fast approaching. Exhilarated by his reflection, he could already feel his power growing. He closed his robe and walked to the window, again gazing out at the mystical city......

Book Review - Angels and Demons

...Book Review ANGELS AND DEMONS I. 1. Bibliography card a. Title: Angels and Demons Author: Dan Brown Publication Date:  May 2000 Publisher: Pocket Books b. Checked out from school library on February 1st 2. Summary card a. The Vatican City is about to explode. Eyes of the media and the people from all over the world are watching in horror. And in the critical moment something nobody expects happens… p 593- 600 b. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 II. 1. Characters Robert Langdon – a Harvard professor of religious symbology, that becomes a witness of the resurrection of an ancient secret society known as Illuminati. A very intelligent, sharp-minded, and a warm –hearted person. I really like this character because of his ability to understand the situation and try everything to help others. Quote: “Religions are not born from scratch. They grow from one another. Modern religion is a collage… an assimilated historical record of man’s quest to understand the divine.” (p 108) This quote represents one of the views on religion in this novel. As a man, that studied different kinds of religions all his life he looks at it only like another myth, but respects it’s influence on people. Vittoria Vetra – A beautiful  particle physicist working in the world’s greatest nuclear research facility – CERN. She and her father had a goal to connect science and religion, by scientifically proving that God exists and almost succeeds in it. She......
