ANSI TIA/EIA-568 is a standard that began with the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) in order to establish standards for cabling systems. Earlier cabling systems were very proprietary. With this being said, they often worked only with specific vendor equipment and resulted in unstructured, and poorly implemented cabling systems. Category cables were developed to create a standard within the industry. This standard incorporates UTP cable systems and sets guidelines for acceptable levels of performance such as bandwidth, attenuation, and cross-talk. Each of these category cables has their own set of defining characteristics. Category 1 cables are not defined by ANSI TIA/EIA-568. It supports a maximum frequency of 1 MHz. This is considered the traditional UTP telephone cable because it can carry voice, but not data transmissions. It was traditionally used for telephone communications. Category 2 cables are also not defined by ANSI/TIA-568. They are capable of data transmission up to 4 MHz with a maximum bandwidth of 4 Mbps. These cables contain four pairs of copper wire. In addition to telephone networks, category 2 cables were frequently used on ARCnet, Apple LocalTalk networks, and 4 Mbps token ring networks. It is not recommended for Ethernet networks. Category 3 cables are recognized by ANSI/TIA-568. These cables consist of four twisted pairs of copper with three twists per foot. Cat 3 cable can be used in 10BASE-T networks and transmit data speeds up to 10 Mbps reliably but can suffer from more EMI than Cat 5. Early PoE specifications support Cat 3 cable. Category 3 cables are still used in telephone wiring, but most structured cable installations are now using Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable. The way that they accomplish this is by creating high quality and technical documents that are relevant to influence the way that people use, design and manage through the internet (Working Groups). Within the IETF, there are many different working groups. Working groups in the IETF have primary mechanisms so that the development of IETF and the specifications and guidelines have certain recommendations and standards (Working Groups). Walker Grand Canyon University: EDA 534 January 11, 2012 The initial collaborative learning community assignment was the unwrapping of ISLLC standard number one. A multiplicity of issues was anticipated in the beginning as this was a group assignment. Typically, group assignments can be challenging due to the varying opinions of the group’s membership. In reality, only two problems arose during the unwrapping process. The first problem surfaced in the beginning of the week. Several members of the group were unsure of how to complete the assignment. A discussion took place and each member contributed thoughts about what the assignment required and how it should be completed. The second problem was the division of work. Each of the ISLLC standards consists of four facets: knowledge, skills, enduring understandings and essential questions. There are five members in the yellow group. One group member quickly assumed the leadership role and created a rotating schedule. The schedule allows each person to tackle a different facet of the standards each week. The schedule also allows each person to compile the assignments and submit them. This was a very equitable way to split the work and all group members agreed to follow the schedule.
