In this essay I will attempt to analyze the artwork named “Beguiling Lure “ by Isaac Talley made in 2009. The medium of this artwork is acrylic and oil on canvas. The composition is simple with the main focus being a dangling object and a portrait of a single bird. The multi coloring of the background is bright and soft with dark and light hues. The artist was able to deliver the paint onto the canvas in different directions and angles which gives the appearance of overlapping colors, roughness and a uneven texture. There is a small horizontal space that has been left blank and untouched in the middle of the canvas that provides a dividing line separating the upper portion of the painting from the lower portion. Even though there is no similarities in the main two subjects in the painting the artist brings balance, proportion and unity to his work by using the same background colors and patterns from top to bottom. The eye is automatically drawn towards two specific areas on the canvas and directly to the middle upper portion of the painting where a circular white object is attached to a dark blue string of yarn that hangs from a peg at the top of the canvas. In the bottom right corner a is a painting of a black bird standing with its back to the viewer as it looks towards the hanging object. I think the painting is a form of expression in which the intention is to give the viewer an increased awareness of how we have become a materialistic society. Because of our increased desire for the better things in life it is easier to allow ourselves to become distracted and loose sight what is truly important in life. As a society we want to strive to be better in everything we do. In the past our american culture has taught us right from wrong, to love God and country and to stand true to our families. The importance of those morals and values seem to have…...

...T. McDonald HUMA205 –Art Appreciation October 23, 2011 Comparison of Renaissance Art Website selection - Judtih (Giorgio da Castelfranco) circa 1504 The painting, ‘Judith’ by Giorgio da Castelfranco done around 1504, is one of many portraits depicting the scene of Judith and Holofernes from the Biblical Book of Judith. The legend states that the widow Judith endears herself to an enemy general, Holofernes, and subsequently beheads him as he lies drunk in his bed (Artlex, 2010). The death of their leader overwhelms the Assyrians and they disband leading many to the conclusion that the widow’s actions save Israel (Artlex, 2010). This representational piece is a two dimensional oil on canvas painting that exhibits soft tones in most of the image. The deeper or more vibrant shades of red near the bottom of the dress worn by the heroin stand out against the earthy browns and greens of the landscape of the scene. The pale pink of the skin of her bare foot which she has propped atop decapitated head of the general emphasizes the grayed and dying body part. The minimum contrast, or gray of the general’s head devalues it and makes it a part of the background while the viewer’s eye is drawn more to Judith and the light to dark shading of red or chiaroscuro of her dress. The landscape behind the courtyard is soft and almost appears monochromatic; it nearly blends into the horizon. There are natural shapes that are prominent in the painting but the sword at Judith’s side...

...Unit 1 Individual Project Art Appreciation AIU Online June 16, 2013 Abstract There are many different definitions for the word art. Most of them come down to art being a creative skill. After researching the definition I have written a brief description of several forms of art by the definitions of art. I spent hours researching art and all the different art forms. I found several definitions beginning with our text book, An Introduction to the Visual Arts and it defines “art as a visual expression of an idea or experience, formed with skill, through the use of a medium.” (Preble, 2011) It also states that art is larger than any single definition. The next definition I found was from the Oxford Dictionary. ”Definition of art [noun] the expression or application of human creative skills and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” (Oxford Dictionary, nd) The Wikipedia definitions is as follows,” art is a diverse range of human activities and the product of those activities; this article focuses primarily on the visual arts, which includes the creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential...

...Nail Art Todays New Art Unit 1 Discussion Board American Intercontinental University June 13, 2013 Tattoos and Nail Art Todays New Art Non- traditional art has been around for thousands of years. Tattoos and Nail Art are two non-traditional examples of what are sometimes considered masterpieces. People have marked their bodies with tattoos for centuries. Body art has taken many different forms throughout many different cultures. Tattoos are permanent designs. Depending on the culture reasons for body art range from rite of passage, social status, rebellion and artistic expressions. Tattoos are made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of skin to change the pigment. Some tattoos are plain but some are masterpieces. http://www.only-tattoos.com/black-cat-tattoos-the-cool-bold-way-to-make-a-statement-of-your-personality/cat-tattoos1 Nail art is another form of expression or art in a non-traditional way. Nail art dates back to 3000bc where henna or mehendi was used to color nails in India and Arabia. Centuries ago Chinese people decorated their nails with real silver. In 1932 a French company Revlon introduced finger nail polish. Nail art is a beautiful art that is also a huge fashion trend nowadays. Nail art is the practice of painting decorative designs on finger nails. I myself believe that clean manicured nails say a lot about a person’s personality. Nail care and fashion has given birth to a whole new non-traditional art......

...Individual 5 Art Appreciation Final Paper Derick Stevenson Rough Draft Introduction Art has been a thing of the past which has also been brought into the future. Everyone loves the great images and structures that the artists portray in their art work. The three art work that I have chosen are Impressionate works of art by Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, and Edward March. This paper will include the description of the works including the styles, a summary of the artists’ personal philosophies of art as well as trends and schools of thought in the art world at the time and in the place the artist was working. Summary Description of the works /style The painting called the “Vision after the Sermon” which is a symbolist of art. Pauls’ used the dropping of a brushstroke called “cezannist” that included matte fields of persuasively movement and non-naturalistic colors. Those colors express the supreme visions of “Breton” as the farmer women’s. . (Kang, 2011) This work is also considered as Gauguin’s definite departure of naturalism that controls impressionism. His colors are without gradients, and it’s contrary to the traditions of the Renaissance. In this works he also ignored the rules of perspective. Because he made the figures on the foreground too large in relation to Jacob and the Angel. He also blocks the view of the wrestlers which according to the tradition should have been the central element of the whole composition. This painting was rejected by the...

...Unit 3 Individual Project Art Appreciation HUMA 205 June 25, 2013 Abstract I will attempt to compare and contrast two pieces of art work from the renaissance period. Out of our textbook I chose a piece by Masaccio, The Holy Trinity. The piece of art I chose from a website is from Leonardo da Vinci called Madonna and Child. Both pieces of art are masterpieces of the early renaissance period. Renaissance Paintings and the Artists For many Europeans the renaissance was a period of achievement and worldwide exploration. It was a time of discovery. A time of new and renewed understanding that changed the medieval times and laid the foundation for modern society. Masaccio became the first major painter of the Italian Renaissance. He greatly influenced the art of painting in the renaissance. He moved Italian painting away from the idealizations of Gothic art and presenting his work as a more profound, natural, and humanist world. The Holy Trinity was the last painting he did and is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. Masaccio constructed his masterpiece with simplicity and naturalistic, three dimensionality. (The Holy Trinity by Masaccio, nd) The Holy Trinity was one of the first paintings Masaccio used the linear perspective. Linear perspective is a mathematical system used for creating three dimensional shapes and figures on a flat surface. He used perspective to make the illusion of three dimensions. The perspective lines draw the......

...it was art. Art was my way to express myself and say things I was not able to. Because with art everything is up to the maker, it lets kids experience a measure of success. This is one reason why art is so important for special needs children. I truly believe that art heals people. Due to me being a child dealing with struggles my parents encouraged me to have an interest in art. I guess you could say I had a form of self awareness somewhat like the quote by Ansel Adams. I wanted to speak but was unable to find my vioce. With art I was able to do this freely and without any worry of being judged or laughed at which I think was one of my issues. My seventh grade art teacher was an amazing teacher and mentor. I hated school, did not want to be there and I was struggling in my other classes but not my art class. I looked forward to being in that class. She taught me that whatever I was doing in my life, I could always use art to get through it. For example, math has always been a horrible subject for me. My teacher showed me how to use art while doing math work. It helped me pass my math class and I still use art to this day when I have a math prblem or I am helping my children. Now my children use art to help them with math. Although I personally never went on a field trip to a art museum while I was in school, I have gone with my children for field trips. I find it fascinating how each child has a different outlook on art. That......

...Monet. The house had very large windows with green shutters (normally painted grey), walls painted pink to blend with a pergola covered with climbing roses and Virginia creeper (North American grapevine). There were 3 entrances to the house, to the left was Monet’s apartment and studio, the main entrance was in the middle, and the kitchen on the right. A sitting room where Mrs. Monet would sit with the children were all adorning in blue. Monet collected many pieces of Japanese woodblocks to decorate several rooms in the house. From the pantry to the upper floor is Monet’s apartment with three large windows with views to his beautiful gardens. Monet’s first studio, which later became his smoking room, is where we would entertain his guest, art dealers, critics, and collectors. He kept many records of his works through his career in his studio. It wasn’t until the age of 50 that he was finally recognized as a master. Alice’s bedroom is separate from his, that is the way the middle-upper class households were then. But their rooms were connected through the bathroom (hmmm, they weren’t stupid). Her room also had Japanese woodblocks on the walls. Wow! The dining room looks contemporary to today’s style. Two tones of yellow, blue dishes on display to enhance (once again) Japanese woodblocks on the walls that Monet collected from the best Japanese artist during his time. A cool blue dining area flows and harmonizes with the kitchen; with a collection of copper utensil on the......

...Unit 2 Individual Project Art Appreciation: HUMA 205- 1401A- 07 January 18, 2014 Abstract In this lesson I will be talking about the Ancient Art from Asia. I will be talking about some of the decorative plates that the Iranians came up with, and also the flasks that they designed. Ancient Art Introduction This plate was from the 5th to the 7th century during the Sasanian period. It is from Iran. It is of silver and gilt. The interior of the plate, shows the lively cultural interaction that took place between the eastern Mediterranean and central Asia during the first millennium. The center of the plate shows the Greek God Dionysos, which is shown here with female- like breasts. He sits next to princess Ariadne, then to the right stands hero, Herakles. The plate shows the triumphal arrival of the Greek God, Dionysos in India. This was a very popular subject of the Roman imperial art, it was later depicted over a wide area of the Byzantine Empire, which was in textiles, gemstones, and metalwork, then transferred through portable media to neighboring Sasanian Iran. These plates are found in The Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art. The Shapur Plate This masterpiece of silverwork shows Shapur II as a ruler of the universe, the king of kings. This was produced during the 4th century CE for Shaour II, the Sasonian king, who is identified by his distinctive crown. Shapur II was one of the most powerful rulers of the Sasonian dynasty, which controlled Iran and......

...Running head: WHAT IS ART? Understanding Art: Eight Forms of Art Quantella Rivers Bradley American InterContinental University Abstract This paper will define art using internet and resource tools. Given eight types of art define and give one example and elaborate. 1. Painting 2. Sculpture 3. Architecture 4. Photography 5. Printmaking 6. Conceptual Art 7. Installation Art 8. Performance Art Art is interpreted by each individual differently, what you may see, I may see something else. What the artist put on canvas or sculpts describes their feeling at that particular moment, however once again the observer may choose to feel or describe something different. “What Is Art” Dictionary.com defines art as the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance and also the class of objects subject to aesthetic criteria; works of art collectively, as paintings, sculptures, or drawings. (Dictionary.com, 2010) This definition is two of twenty-two definitions defined on the online dictionary. The two definitions were selected because it related to the subject at-hand. Merriam-Webster online defines art as the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects; also as works so produced. Artists use paintings as a form of communication; whether the painting is elaborate or just a mere......

...Art Appreciation Question 1. Analyze this painting by addressing these three formal elements and terms describe the palette, shape and Space. Be sure to identify the perspective system employed in this painting The palette, or range of colors used in this painting, have a more neutral tone. The combination of forest greens, golden yellows, faint blues, and grays, combined with the lack of any bright colors, gives the painting a more neutral look. The painting employs several triangle shapes, which can be seen at the apex of the trees and the two mountains in the posterior of the landscape. The spacing of the painting is both three-dimensional and deep. As one looks into the painting, it feels as if one could walk into the painting and move into the landscape. The painting has depth, as it feels like one can “see for miles” into the painting. This painting certainly employs an aerial perspective system, as the clouds, haze of the atmosphere, and vantage point all add depth to the space. Question 2. Explain how the artist uses color create space. (In answering this question, be sure to identify if the compositional space is two dimensional or three dimensional) Also articulate how the artist uses color to convey light and rhythm. The artist uses the varying colors on the red background to create the perception of three-dimensional space. The contrast of the dark dots and the golden dots on the red background makes the painting appear as if the red is a type of......

...Art Appreciation Emily Yost March 12, 2011 Art is a form of work which encompasses so many things. You can have art that is from the same Era, but yet be very different. Art can consist of some of the same things which you can find in common with another time period. I want to try and take a look at three individual pieces of art belonging to the same style and era. I will then try to evaluate these works from tool s that I have learned. I have chosen the Baroque style of art. This style is known for its use of drama and high use of theatrical methods. It was a creation of the Catholic Church (Sayre, H. M. 2007, 477). This style of art developed and bloomed in Europe somewhere around the early 17th to mid 18th century. It has its emphases up on drama, swirling forms and very intricate and elaborate ornamentation. The calling of St. Mathew is one of the most magnificent masterpieces there is. This was painted by Michelangelo Mersi Da Caravaggio . The painting reached completion in 1599-1600. In this painting there appears to be a single window in the foreground. Not much light happens to be filtering through the panes (http://www.albany.edu/scj/jcjpc/vol6is3/st-matthew-calling.html). There appears to be some kind of table at which five individuals are sitting at. One appears to be looking at money, another like they just sat down. The outlook of the room appears dull and very gloomy. To the right of this art there appear to be two men.......

...Kayla Demel Art Appreciation 103 Online 04/1915 Comparison of Wendell Castle’s Cavalcade and Harry Bertoia’s Sounding Sculpture Comparison of Wendell Castle’s Cavalcade and Harry Bertoia’s Sounding Sculpture The artwork Cavalcade by Wendell Castle compared with Harry Bertoia’s sounding sculpture were designed for different purposes but both use elements of art to emphasis the meanings of each. I found these sculptures at the Wichita Art Museum. I selected these two because I found sculptures very interesting. The Cavalcade was made by grouping different shapes together to defy gravity and it grabbed my attention because it did not look correct because the ball was off certain and shouldn’t have been stable. The Sounding sculpture grabbed my attention because it was made to make music by many different bars hitting each other. The Cavalcade sculpture made by Wendell Castle is mahogany, lacewood, poplar, cooper, and gold leaf. The dimensions are 53 ½ by 21 ¼ by 17 1/2. This was made in 1989. There are many different shapes that has it owns color and identity. It wasn’t supposed to be symmetric because it makes a unique attack on gravity. The base of this piece is a blue green color and then a black longer piece that looks like it could be a vase is on top of that. The long black piece is not straight up it is slightly leaning to the left. Then there is a gold platter looking shape that is holding a ball off-center. I think that the artist is trying to......
