Art can serve a variety of purposes in society, both positive and negative. The contributions of art to society can be evaluated through pragmatic philosophy. Art can bring awareness to people. It is a powerful means of presenting truths about humankind that cannot be expressed any other way. Art also connects people in a society by presenting an idea that everyone can relate to in a universal way. The awareness that comes from art will only lead to a better society if the people take action based on the ideas they discover in art. Art has the possibility of making society better, but there are several steps involved. First, the art must reach the public. Then the people must appreciate the value of the art. The last step involves people changing their behavior to improve the society. The initial action of making art available to the public is necessary for the art to have any impact on society, but it is not necessary in classifying the piece as art. John Dewey was an advocate for bringing art to the common people. His pragmatic approach has some value because art will not change society until the people can experience the art. One problem with the theory is that art may have value aside from promoting positive social changes. A wonderful novel may be burned before it could ever reach the public, but the novel could still be art. The possible impact was never realized, and it is a loss to society.
The second step toward changing society involves the reader, viewer, or listener. The reaction to art should involve a new appreciation for the human experience. Art may depict positive aspects of life such as love, beauty, honor, and devotion. The negative human conditions like fear, hatred, and injustice may be just as meaningful in art. It follows that a viewer will have a strong emotional response to art because the ideas expressed are universal in nature.…...

Purpose

...Annie Taylor EDCI 1001- James Baker 9/25/11 My Purpose In Life The literal meaning of the word “purpose” is “the reason for which something exists or is done, made, or used.” I believe my purpose is to follow the footsteps of the Lord. I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic grade, middle, and high school. Both my parents are Catholic and I am very thankful for having a solid moral “ground” for which I was able to grow on. I went to Christian camp for 9 years growing up and it was there that I really found my purpose in life. Surrounded by young adults as my counselors and mentors, I was able to easily relate to them and was set a good example of how I want to be when I am their age. I am their age now and I feel like I am on the right track but it is an ongoing journey to fulfill my goal of following the Lord in most everything I do. My mother always used to say, “Do one random act of kindness everyday”. She told me it was a way to give back to the Lord for all the blessings and gifts he gave me. That is one way I do to reach my purpose. Another way is going to church. There are many things I do not agree with in the Catholic Church but it is the closest way I feel I get close to the Lord. Going to church makes me feel like I am better suited to fulfilling my goal. I use it as a “refresher course” or reminder of what I need to do to be a happy person. I’ve been though stages of my life when I greatly doubted the Lord. Whenever I am in doubt, looking through my......

Egyptian Art - Art History

...Art History October 07, 2012 Art of Ancient Egypt – Chapter 03 The antiquity and continuity of Egyptian civilization were legendary, the period of roughly three thousand years during which Egyptian architecture, painting, and sculpture remained essentially the same. The main purpose of Egyptian art was to serve the needs of the royalty, especially the king and his retainers, both in this life and the next. Egyptian art reflected an idealized world, the ideal of the human figure developed early among the Egyptians, with body parts sized according to a set of standard proportions (Hartt 72). The poses of these figures are rigid, both feet planted firmly on the ground, with rigid knees, and the left leg placed slightly in front of the other. Egyptian art also incorporated certain fictions in order to express a larger truth, as an example, the beautifully shape of the pharaohs will mostly show the image of the ideal leader of Egypt, even if he/she is not exactly like that in reality, the message that the sculpture will pass is the power and magnificence. The great age of mature ancient Egyptian civilization can be divided into three periods: Old Kingdom - in this time period the Sphinx and Great Pyramid at Giza were built; the royal statues emphasize the majesty and divinity of the pharaoh. A curious detail about the colors used in sculptures is that usually to differ male from female, the artisans would utilize brown(men) and yellow(women), emphasizing that men were......

Purpose of Ancient Art of Egypt

...Many of the great works of ancient Egypt depicts regular and detailed depictions of human beings and the nature. Moreover, due to the highly religious nature of ancient Egyptian civilization, Egyptian artists have depicted gods, goddesses, and Pharaohs. The function was to describe their divine nature. Ancient Egyptian art is characterized by the idea of order. Symbolism and the use of simple geometry played an important role in establishing sense of order. Nonetheless, many Egyptian arts were not meant to be seen and were hidden from the commoners. For instance, the magnificent treasures of Tutankhamun were not to be seen by people. The first dwellers of the Nile Valley started making engraved drawings on the steep high faces of rocks, in the early eighth millennium BC .They were believed to be a manner of recording data. The depiction of the essential day today activities of their lives, like wild games, hunting scenes, river boating and domesticating animals were among the drawings. The art of the Predynastic period has endured in the form of carved stone , ivory grave goods, pottery vessels, which were placed near the dead body in burial cavities. Figures of living beings dedicated in fulfillment of a vow, were often female statuettes made of pottery and ivory. They may have related to early fertility followers of religious beliefs, as they amplified sexual features. Some of the painted scenes on pottery vessels show the prehistoric rock-carvings and styles and......

Art and It's Purpose

...The purpose and Power of Art Art is a tool that has been used for many centuries, in different cultures over the world. Art can come in many different forms such as paintings, music, theatre etc. Art is a powerful tool that can be used to depict, to denounce or even simply to entertain. It has the ability to bring a weary soul to peace, to smooth a troubled spirit because of its beauty or to stir up a man’s heart because of its strong graphic visualization of the real world. In Allison Dorothy’s essay, This is Our World, Allison describes art as a tool that can be used as a voice for the weak. Allison believes that art is powerful enough to disturb a human’s mind by making him think deeply about the meaning of the art piece and that it can at the same time also be used as a tool to denounce the evil that exists in this world. Although Allison views on the use of art are considerable and thoughtful, they are in my opinion bias and not complete. Art is not only meant to trouble the spirit of a person to get across a message or a voice, art is shapeless and can be bent into whichever shape. It can also be used for many other different purposes, depending on the author of the art piece, whether the purpose is righteous or wicked. Allison see’s art as an unpredictable thing that should be used to force people to see things they do not wish to see “Art should surprise and astonish, and hopefully make you think something you had not though until you saw it.” (Allison 42). The...

No Purpose

...To have no purpose means that you are living and doing things for no reason, because you do not know who you are or why you are on this Earth. It also means that whatever you do in life is meaningless and there isn’t anything that you do that you like or enjoy. If you are working or going to school, you’re just working and going to school, not giving your all, or doing it because someone else, such as your parents or peers says that you must do these things. If there is a purpose, it means that you know why you are on this Earth, why you are living, and why you are doing the things that you do. With purpose, you are living and doing things to get something out of it. Doing things with purpose makes a purpose feel life and feel good about doing certain things like going to school, work, or indulging in a special hobby that makes you happy. In relation to the Fact/Value Dichotomy, to have no purpose, one seems to not have morals or values, or even a conscience, when there ought to be. Some examples are people who rob, steal, or even kill. They do these things because deep down, they have not valued their own lives; therefore, they don’t value anyone else’s. In relation to the Faith/Reason Dichotomy, to have purpose is to have faith of the unseen. Although a person may not like his or her job, he or she goes to work because in the end, they know that they will benefit from working, thus, they give their all day by day...

Purpose

...Statement of Purpose I am the first in my family who ever went to college. Coming from a low-income African American family, I had to overcome many challenges to graduate from college. My experience at the University of Texas at Austin has been tremendous. It has opened up exciting possibilities for my life, including the opportunity to get a higher degree. I have always believed in education. Growing up in a poor neighborhood in Houston, Texas I saw so many young men and women disillusioned, and never had the opportunities to experience a good college education. We need to make higher education more accessible to the urban poor. This will require concerted efforts both at the level of the educational institutions and the low-income communities. I want to be part of this effort. I majored in ‘Youth and Community Studies’ with these aspirations in mind. As an undergraduate student at The University of Texas at Austin, I worked in a number of education related capacities, as – middle school STAAR tutor, physical education teacher assistant, sports counselor at the YMCA of Greater Austin and as basketball coach for middle and high school girls. My job experiences have given me a wonderful opportunity to learn and work with people of different cultures, lifestyles, beliefs, and backgrounds. In particular, my teaching, tutoring and coaching experiences at Austin Discovery School and YMCA of Austin gave me a good perspective of how public and private schools operate,......

Arts

...As a lover of art I tend to find, beauty in everything some way. Whether it be a simple flower out in a field of brown grass, or a pattern that everyone thinks looks too busy. I didn’t realize how the ‘Beauty is all around you’ quote would fit me until I actually started to study it. No, I’m not art major because I can’t draw to save my life, but I found that studying it for a hobby is more relaxing than I thought it would have been. Living in New York City, I was able to go to an art museum every weekend. Look at the different paintings on the wall and feel a different emotion for each. If was funny how an 18x24 painting could make me feel so different about certain things. All a painting is and ever will be, and lines and different stroke one a white canvas if you break it down bit by bit. But together those line and strokes make something beautiful. When I moved from New York I thought I would have to give up that passion for a whole year. I, personally knew that I could do it but then I would be bored on my weekends, something I didn’t want to happen ever especially since I felt I was moving to the middle of nowhere. But I was mistaken when I found out that El Paso had an art museum. That was very shocking news to me, I know not everywhere has an art museum or a museum at all. Recently I was able to visit, I know it’s not good to compare two things together all the time, of course the El Paso art museum isn’t, The Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Whitney Museum of......

Purpose of Education

...Purpose of education Name: Institution: Professor: Class: Date of submission: Purpose of education Education is considered to be a very important aspect of every individual’s life. Education acts as a tool that shapes each individual’s life. In general there is no single definition of education that fully defines what education is. Different scholars in the field of education define education in their own different ways. However, most of the definitions of education converge at the acquiring or passing of knowledge, skills and behaviour from one individual to another or through an institution such as the family, school or the society. The word education is derived from a Latin word e-ducere which means “leading out” and therefore it means leading out from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge (Bailey, Barrow, Carr & McCarthy, 2013). In the formal setting education involves studying of a variety of subjects to learn new skills, habits and acquire new knowledge. It is usually divided into pre-school, primary school, secondary school and college or apprentice. For the purpose of this paper therefore education is defined as the practice of passing knowledge mostly in schools and colleges. The purpose of education in the society has been a matter of major debate among different philosophers of education. Education performs a very important role in an individual as well as the society. In our present society......

...I want my purpose in life is to contribute to a better world. To do this, I have made it a priority to incorporate this goal in to my values and develop habits that will allow me to achieve this ultimate goal. Through my work, school, and relationships, I have found that when I focus on my ultimate goal, and applied my values, I have been able to experience enormous success in all three aspects of my life. These values that I find most important are integrity, respect and awareness. With work, my goals are to keep challenging myself and find a career that fits me the best. This career should be a fast paced, customer oriented and plenty of opportunities to continue to learn. Currently, I’m part of a planning and research team that evaluates flood risk and propose potential mitigation solutions. I have been able to excel in my position because I have applied my values consistency through all of my work. When evaluating flood risk, a lot of the data used is sensitive information therefore having integrity is essential since people need to trust me with this information. Additionally, flood risk resiliency planning involves many stakeholders, therefore prioritizing respect when communicating with others is essential for working together. Lastly, flood risk management involves both a qualitative evaluation approach and a quantitative analysis. By having awareness for others, I believe it has helped me to develop solutions that take in to consideration the many impacts that a......
