Baxter Key Issues Baxter Manufacturing Company is a world class parts manufacturer. BMC can produce efficiently large volumes of high quality stampings. Over the years there has be a rapid growth which has caused some problems. BMC had to turn away some existing customers because they could not handle so many orders. They did not have the capacity for it therefore loss many sales and customers who never returned. BMC decided they needed to invest to increase capacity. BMC used the just-in-time approach which meant they carried minimal inventories of raw materials and parts. This created a long cycle time, the whole production process took at least 2 weeks to complete. This is too long for customers to wait on their product. Also BMC has been using paper document flows between customer and supplier. The automotive customers have forced BMC to convert to electronic data interchange (EDI). This means electronic flows directly between the customer’s computer and BMC’scomputer. But there are still problems and delays due to compatibility as each type of customer has its own variation on the EDI standard it uses. The main problem now was the decision to make or buy the manufacturing software system. Moore, vice president of manufacturing proposed to purchase the EMS package and Collins, MIS manager suggested we continue to build our system. Baxter was not sure which route to take as both have its pros and cons. Though the past unsuccessful package implementation were failures this has deterred Baxter decision about buying yet another software. Collin suggests that building our own manufacturing software will be more customize towards the way they do business. Baxter must make the best decision based on what the company needs are and what will provide the most benefits in the long…...

Case Study Iii-3make-or-Buy Decision at Baxter Manufacturing Company

...Part A - Case Study III-3Make-or-Buy Decision at Baxter Manufacturing Company 1. What are the arguments in favor of Manufacturing Vice President Moore’s proposal to purchase the manufacturing software from EMS? Moore argues that Baxter Manufacturing Company (BMC) is losing it’s reputation as a world-class parts manufacturer and is therefore implying that the company will lose business unless they purchase the manufacturing software. Moore also thinks that the manufacturing software will improve their manufacturing efficiency and customer service. The vendor, Effective Management Solutions (EMS), has told Moore that the entire system can be up and running in six months, where the estimated time to build an in-house system is two years. So there appears to be a big savings in the implementation timeline. The cost to buy the vendor provided manufacturing software is a fixed $220,000. The estimated cost to build the in-house system is over $400,000. So there appears to be a significant cost savings in purchasing the manufacturing software. Moore also argues that the vendor system is a better system because it is a mature system that has gone through many iterations of changes based on feedback from hundreds of customers. Moore believes that adopting BMC’s manufacturing process to the vendor software will improve BMC’s operations because of the experience that has gone into the manufacturing software.Moore believes that this system will be successful because he is......

Baxter Healthcare Corporation

...1999 BAXTER HEALTHCARE CORPORATION Work & Life Strategic Initiative What is the initiative? Baxter’s Work & Life Strategic Initiative formally began with an 18-month extensive employee-needs assessment that provided a far better understanding of how the company could benefit by championing greater work-life balance for all its employees—for women as well as men. Baxter has succeeded at integrating its business case for worklife balance into a new corporate culture that is supported from the top down, demonstrated by strong CEO commitment and role modeling. A major result of this strategic assessment has been that Baxter redefined and expanded the work-life experience to encompass more categories of conflicts experienced by employees. Baxter, in conjunction with MK Consultants, developed the four-level The Work and Life Pyramid of Needs, which rests on a base of Respect (the company’s attitude toward the employee’s needs) and rises through Balance (the employee’s goal) to Flexibility (what the company wants to help the employee attain) to Programs (the supports that the company provides). The study refocused Baxter’s strategy, giving increased importance to and emphasis on respect for the “whole” person, including his or her responsibilities and interests outside of work. The initiative has since added work-life to Baxter’s shared values, employee satisfaction tools, performance standards, and other existing HR initiatives. In addition, the study’s findings added up to......

The company produces medical products that are used in IV (intravenous solutions), anesthesia, dialysis, and many blood disorders along with medical devices, biotechnology products61 and specialty pharmaceuticals. They recognize that alternate work arrangements can be a way to meet employees’ needs for balance and flexibility, and that the employee should examine his/her own personal characteristics when considering a change in schedule. The company Web site includes a guide for determining if alternative work arrangements would be a good fit for the employee’s personality and career. Options like part-time work, job-sharing, compressed work week, and telecommuting are analyzed. If the employee feels that an alternative work arrangement is appropriate, Baxter provides an online proposal kit for the employee to request a more flexible schedule. Baxter has acquired......

Baxter Case Write Up

...Mr. Joe C Client RE: Baxter International Inc. Recommendation Executive Summary Dear Mr. Client, Baxter International is a stable company showing consistent growth over the last 5 years and I believe that the company will continue to grow at a similar rate. Their products are not easily matched by competitors and demand for them will continue as they are related to critical health care functions. Baxter’s cost risk relative to the market is low. This is reflected in a low beta and therefore cost of equity. The intrinsic value of their stock is far higher than where it is trading and is worth heavy consideration to be bought. ...AIUB 1 Master of Business Administration Course Instructor: Dr. Swapan Kumar Dhar Definition of Statistics Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing and interpreting data for the purpose of making intelligent statements and drawing appropriate conclusions. So, according to this definition, there are four stages: (1) Collection of data (2) Presentation of data (3) Analysis of data and (4) Interpretation of data. Example of Statistics: Examples include the average starting salary of college graduates, the number of deaths due to road accidents last year, and 20% students of BBA are female. In these examples statistics are a value or a percentage. Other examples include: 95% students of BBA come to the class in time. 25% students of IBA come to the campus by car. The above are all examples of statistics. Data: Data are the facts and figures that are collected, analyzed and summarized for presentation and interpretation. The data collected in a particular study are referred as the data set for the study. For example, the heights (in cm.) of 14 randomly selected persons from a group of 100 persons are as follows: 152, 160, 158, 155, 154, 155, 162, 164, 160, 153, 161, 158, 167, 151. The above information on height of people constitutes a data. A set of five students is selected from a......

...Request For Permission To Pursue Research |Paychex, Inc | |Memo To: Frank Fiorille, Director CC: Michael Silsbee, Risk Management Supervisor: Doug Baxter, Credit and Banking Risk Manager From: Danielle Cole Date: 3/16/2010 Re: Request for research proposal Request for Approval I’d like your approval for me to continue with my research on the benefits of switching to a lockbox for our invoice payments. In this memo, you will find some of the highlighted benefits that I feel will help you make your decision for me to continue with this research. A lockbox is a P.O. Box that is set up with our bank that our customers will be able to send their payments too. The bank has a machine that will open, sort and process the checks. Once the day’s checks are processed, the bank will create a file and send it to us. The Information Technology will load the file into our Oracle system and once the nightly processes run, the file will post automatically into our billing system. In my initial research of the benefits of switching to a lockbox, I have found many advantages. Switching to a lockbox could mean a reduction in costs, less errors, it would be more time efficient, and we would have an easier look up process. Switching to a lockbox could save us money by possibly reducing our head count. We have the potential to reduce our head count by two people. We could also save money because we could cut out fuel reimbursement casts. If we had a lockbox, the......
