Corporate debt Securities

A debt security in finance is when a lender such as a bank or corporation lends money to an interested party looking for financial gain in the form of bonds. Debt securities are interesting because they serve the purpose of creditors who loan money to a borrower and accrue interest to sell them. They have value. For example, a creditor creates a binding agreement with a borrower listing all the financial terms for loan payment in the form of a contract in which will carry value because of the accrued interest attached to it. So with the accrued interest attached, these contracts carry value and now can be sold or even traded; hence debt security (secure debt). This is how creditors secure debt. Lacanian Psychoanalytical Analysis of “Young Goodman Brown”

...that a literary work is little more than a manifestation of the author's own neuroses. However, psychoanalytic criticism does not concern itself with what the author intended but rather what the author never intended. By applying Lacan’s model of the human pysche to Nathaniel Hawethorne’s “Young Goodman Brown," we can see how Young Goodman Brown transitions through Lacan’s three orders. As Brown makes these transitions we ultimately realize that the “fellow-traveler” accompanying Brown is essentially a reflection of himself as the two come together to make a dynamic whole as opposed to two binary opposites. We first meet Young Goodman Brown while he is in the “imaginary order;” joyful and united with his young wife, Faith. Up to this point it would appear that he has relied on his perceived images of concepts and his community as a way to interpret his world. He had a “sweet, pretty wife,” whom he advised that by saying her prayers and going to bed at dusk no harm would befall her. He lived in a quiet Salem village with authority figures he respected and admired “the good old minister,” and an “excellent old Christian [lady].” Yet in spite of all these things Young Goodman Brown was fractured, feeling a lack and somehow desiring more. Whether it was simply further knowledge he sought, we know not. However, one thing remains certain; it was his quest for wholeness that led him into the woods that fateful evening. His desire became a driving force that propelled him into......

Analysis on Young Goodman Brown

...Analysis on “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne There has been much speculation and analysis on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown.” Each and every one has their own opinions about what Hawthorne really meant about this short story, but of course you can tell by their accreditation which source is more likely to be accurate. In “Young Goodman Brown”, the main character, Goodman Brown, experiences a life changing revelation at the beginning of this short story. The experience is a walk through the woods, something that he states his father and father’s father embarked on. This particular journey shapes his life and changes him forever. What is particularly peculiar about this journey is that it goes through the woods at night. And during this time period if you were caught in the woods at night you were considered a Satan worshiper, doing the Devil’s brood, or practicing witchcraft, which meant all the same things during this era. We know Young Goodman Brown is a Puritan based on his belief system, so this experience isn’t one he is looking forward to, but he knows he has to do it. Kind of like getting a shot, you know you have to do it, and it’s good for you, but you are hesitant about doing it. So along the journey he meets with a man that looks similar to him, but older. The man is kind of dark and shady, and he carries a staff that looks like a serpent. So the symbolism there represents that this man is the Devil. Throughout the duration of his......

Founded in 1870 by George Garvin Brown, a pharmaceutical salesman, Brown-Forman has grown into a leader of high-quality spirits and wine around the world. Beginning with a single brand, Old Forester, the company acquired Jack Daniel in 1956, Canadian Mist in 1971, Southern Comfort in 1979 and many other premium alcoholic beverage brands throughout its 144 years of existence. In addition, Brown-Forman acquired Lenox in 1983, a producer of crystal, china, and luggage. In the 1990s, Brown-Forman began aggressively marketing internationally and saw a steady increase in its global market share of premium liquors. However, the consumer product division of Brown-Forman did not see the same growth and the company eventually sold the Lenox division in 2005. Today, Brown-Forman is a publically traded company, predominantly with 33 brands of premium wine and spirits sold in 135 countries(I found in the 2014 annual report that......

James Brown

...James Joseph Brown[1] (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was an American singer and dancer. The founding father of funk music and a major figure of 20th-century popular music and dance, he is often referred to as "The Godfather of Soul". In a career that spanned six decades, Brown influenced the development of several music genres.[2] Brown began his career as a gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia. Joining an R&B vocal group called the Avons that later evolved to become The Famous Flames, Brown served as the group's lead singer.[3][4] First coming to national public attention in the late 1950s as a member of The Flames with the hit ballads "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me", Brown built a reputation as a tireless live performer with the Famous Flames and his backing band, sometimes known as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. Brown's success peaked in the 1960s with the live album Live at the Apollo and hit singles such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". During the late 1960s, Brown moved from a continuum of blues and gospel-based forms and styles to a profoundly "Africanized" approach to music-making that influenced the development of funk music.[5] By the early 1970s, Brown had fully established the funk sound after the formation of The J.B.'s with records such as "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" and "The Payback". Brown-Forman Distillers Corporation

...In early July 1978, W. L. Lyons Brown, Jr., president and chief executive officer of Brown-Forman Distillers Corporation, faced an important acquisition decision. The principal owners of Southern Comfort Corporation had approached Brown in May with an offer to sell the company at a price of $94.6 million. In preparing his response, Brown was evaluating the feasibility of the asking price and the likely effects of the acquisition on Brown-Forman’s share price. As a leading producer, marketer, and importer of wines and distilled spirits (including the well-known Jack Daniel’s brand), Brown-Forman ($457 million net sales) was the fifth-largest distiller in the United States, after National Distillers ($586 million), Seagram ($2,018 million), Heublein ($839 million), and Hiram Walker ($875 million). How Brown had chosen to position Brown-Forman among its competitors would affect the appraisal of Southern Comfort. Brown-Forman: Financial Goals and Performance In 1977, Brown-Forman’s management adopted new long-range financial goals regarding: (1) hurdle rates for investment; (2) size of the capital budget through 1980; (3) target capital structure; and (4) dividend payout. The primary objective of these goals was to “increase the value of the stockholders’ investment.” The dividend payout ratio (all dividends paid divided by net income) was targeted at a range of 30% to 35%. Planned investment during the 1978 to 1980 period included $86 million for advertising......

A Dark Brown Dog Analysis

...The short story of A Dark Brown Dog begins even before the first word is read on the page. Its ingenious and creative title brings to mind an image of what the story will be focused on, a dark brown dog who represents a man who has recently be freed from the chains of slavery. Stephen Crane writes a comprehensive description of this little dog and its experience of being taken in by a little boy. The amount of symbolism used throughout this essay is staggering, and is the main literary element used in this piece of work. Written in 1890, this story represents the period of time that came shortly before. The dog, the boy, and the father all act as important symbols in this classic retelling of the reconstruction period know as Jim Crow. Jim Crow was the period of time in the United States after the Civil War. Slaves had been emancipated, and equality was supposedly underway. Unfortunately that was not the truth of what really went on in the United States. Many blacks were either still kept as slaves, or subjugated into a serf like state. The dark brown dog, which the story derives its title from, enters the story and takes on the role of a former slave. He is seen in the beginning as walking down the road, tripping over the long piece of rope tied around his neck. This piece of rope is symbolic of the former slavery which he just became free of. However, it is impossible to do anything with that freedom because now the dog has nowhere to live; the dog......

Brown Forman Differentiation

...I. Current News On February 1, 2010 Brown-Forman stated it is planning to establish its own distribution company in Germany starting in the third or fourth quarter of 2010. Germany plays a role in international sales and having a fully-owned sales and marketing operation will greatly help Brown-Forman’s sales. Brown-Forman should gain a competitive advantage in Germany because they will no longer need a distributer. By being able to sell and market its own products Brown-Forman should have increased international sales in Germany. (Brown-Forman News, 2010) On January 15, 2010 Brown-Forman announced its plan on giving up to $100,000 to American Red Cross to assist in the relief efforts. Brown-Forman also said it will match employee donations up to $20,000 for American Red Cross, which means the company and its employees will contribute as much as $140,000 to the Haitian Relief efforts. This kind of charity is good public relations for the company. It shows Brown-Forman is more than just a company that cares only about their net income and sales. Because there are many companies in the same industry who haven’t done anything for Haiti, people could be more likely to buy Brown-Forman’s line of products knowing that the company donated money. (Brown-Forman, 2010) In 2009, The Brown-Forman Corporation achieved the highest year to year score increase among all companies rated by the Human Rights Campaign. The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights...

Raj Bohemian vs. Young Goodman Brown Analysis

...comes insurmountable power. In the short stories, “Raj Bohemian” and “Young Goodman Brown” both main characters have the truth revealed to them. What these two characters do with that knowledge however, are on exact opposites of the spectrum. So who made the right decision? When shaken with an epiphany about the world around you, do you act on it or do you act as if you were never enlightened at all? And why did these two people; both in similar situations, react to their discovery so differently? In both stories, Goodman Brown and the narrator of “Raj Bohemian” learn that the people they surround themselves with are fake. For Goodman Brown, his whole town is full of Satanists; in the Narrator case, all his friends are salesmen of trends. Understanding how much either Young Goodman Brown or the Narrator actually lost is essential in understanding why they responded how they did. Young Goodman Brown was a married man; the narrator was not. I feel as if just this detail can begin to unravel the mysteries as to why these two men acted as they did. Young Goodman Brown cared deeply for his wife. He said “Poor little Faith! . . . What a wretch am I to leave her on such an errand!” and also “there is my wife, Faith. It would break her dear little heart; and I’d rather break my own.” What these quotes show is just how deeply Young Goodman Brown cares about his wife. What this means is that when Goodman Brown saw his beloved wife at the “witch-meeting”, he lost far more than the......
