INTRODUCTION This book review is for our QUALITY subject with our professor Mr. R. Romero. The book is entitled Built to Last: Successful habits of Visionary companies By Jim Collins and Jerry Porras, published by HarperCollins Publishers. Built to Last is a blueprint for building organizations that will endure long into the twenty-first century.
"This is not a book about charismatic visionary leaders. It is not about visionary product concepts or visionary products or visionary market insights. Nor is it about just having a corporate vision. This is a book about something far more important, enduring, and substantial. This is a book about visionary companies." So write Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in this groundbreaking book that shatters myths, provides new insights, and gives practical guidance to those who would like to build landmark companies that stand the test of time.
Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Collins and Porras took eighteen truly exceptional and long-lasting companies -- they have an average age of nearly one hundred years and have outperformed the general stock market by a factor of fifteen since 1926 -- and studied each company in direct comparison to one of its top competitors. They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day -- as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large corporations. Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from other companies?"
Collins and Porras go beyond the incessant barrage of management buzzwords and fads of the day to discover timeless qualities that have consistently distinguished out-standing companies. They also provide inspiration to all executives and entrepreneurs by destroying the false…...

...fitfully before the roaring fire. Sir Tristram did not answer immediately, and when it came, he spoke as though from a great distance. ―Incomprehensible barbarity - these peasant rebels are worse than wild dogs. What they did to that girl‘s parents and brothers…‖ Distraught, his words trailed off. ―My every waking thought is haunted by that scene. And knowing that little Jehennette here had been forced to watch, knowing her turn was coming…it is more than I can bear.‖ A female grey cat detached itself from the shadows and butted her head against Tristram‘s arm. He scratched her chin, and she purred loudly in response. ―And yet you saved her, Tristram - that has to count for something. I just hope we can accommodate Jehennette better than the last stray you brought home.‖ ―What? I thought the cat was making good progress,‖ he said, stroking the feline‘s back. ―Progress? When you are absent, she hides in every nook and cranny and attacks me, our sons - even the servants - in a frenzy of slashing claws and biting teeth whenever we walk past. Behold my shins!‖ Isabelle lifted the hem of her dress, revealing painful injuries. ―You said Edine could be a family pet, not yours alone!‖ Sir Tristram ran his fingers over the cat‘s collar. ―She wears a jeweled collar, my wife.‖ ―What of it, my lord?‖ ―It means she was a noble‘s pet and therefore tame. She can be tame again.‖ Tristram scratched the cat‘s chin and indicated Jehennette with a nod. ―The cat needs time to find her way......

The Last Samurai

...rapper in Immortal Technique is Felipe Andrew Coronel, he talks about a kid he met and basically tells the kids whole life story on how he ruined his life. He says at the beginning of the song “I once knew a man who’s real name was William, his primary concern was making a million”. William, otherwise known as Billy, wanted to be a hardcore thug like all the other people he would hang out with and make a lot of money doing it. Through out the song he talks about how William started to sell drugs to make money and eventually dropped out of school to sell weed. Williams dream of making millions blinded him and he started to turn out like one of the dirty thugs he wanted to be. Eventually William got arrested, then the songwriter says, “He built a reputation ‘cause he could hustle and steal, but got locked once and didn’t hesitate to squeal”. This is saying how William told the cops everything and people called him a snitch. Since he snitched and told cops whatever him or his friends did, his “crew” lost respect for him. Later on he started to rob people, steal, anything he could do to gain his respect back from his crew. He started fights all the time and started selling crack to pursue his dream of making millions. The crew told William that anyone could start fights or sell drugs, but a real thug could “stab someone until they die…standing in front of them, staring straight into their eyes”. Then William knew he had to step it up and do something to let his crew know he was......

Men Who Built America

...“The Men Who Built America” “The Men Who Built America” was based off of three men, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Carnegie, each played a very important role in making America what it is today. Rockefeller made a monopoly off of standard oil. Vanderbilt made a monopoly of the railroad system in America while Carnegie made a monopoly from steel. The men had many accomplishments throughout their lives. John D. Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839 and was an American industrialist and philanthropist. He founded Standard Oil which dominated the oil industry and became the first great U.S. business trust. Standard Oil began as an Ohio partnership formed by John D. Rockefeller, his brother William Rockefeller, Henry Flagler, Jabez Bostwick, chemistSamuel Andrews, and a silent partner, Stephen V. Harkness.  Adjusting for inflation, he is often regarded as the richest person in history. Rockefeller spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement. His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy. He was able to do this through the creation of foundations that had a major effect on medicine, education, and scientific research. When he died on May 23, 1937 he left his son John D. Rockefeller Jr. was entrusted with the supervisions of the foundations. Cornelius Vanderbilt was born on May 27, 1794 and was also an American industrialist and philanthropist. He Who Lasts Last Lasts Best?

...HE WHO LASTS LAST LASTS BEST? As discussed in the exercise, the improvemnets in technologies and business processes at one side expands the market but on the other hand also brings decay for several players in the market. With the decay deciding the exit / collude / compete strategy for any particular industry player becomes a crucial factor. In this exercise we have two players – David & Goliath in the slingshot industry, which is one of the decaying industry. Based on theprevious quarter results of each other, both the players decide either to stay or to exit in the coming quarter without knowing each other’s choice. Since we know that slingshot industry will extinct by 1991, we need to come up with the exit strategy for the existing two firms. To analyze a possible exit point we have used the „Elimination of Dominated Strategy“ with following steps: 1. Drawing the sequential decision tree for David & Goliath from 1988 to 1991 2. Working from backwards to eliminate non-credible options at each point 3. Finding a possible set of best strategy at each level 4. Taking the chosen set of strategy above to the previous level 5. Repeating steps 2 to 4 till we locate a possible exit point for one of the players | David | Qty | Revenue | Goliath | Qty | Revenue | David & | Qty | Revenue-D | Revenue - G | | Alone | |   | Alone | |   | Goliath | | | | | | |   | | |   | | | | | Jan. 1988 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 4 |......

America: Built on Immigration and Social Integration

...America: Built On Immigration and Social Integration SOC/315 2014 America: Built On Immigration and Social Integration Over the years, immigration and social integration has supported the diverse culture and society of America. The country started as a country with no diversity, to one that is filled with different types of people from all over the world. German, Italians, Polish, even the Irish have all made their way into America. However, their transitions were not always easy ones. The America that is known today is successful and thriving. The multicultural society and labor force benefits from the diversity of tradition and life experience. America greatly benefits from having such an abundantly diverse culture. Education is benefitted from the diversity. The German Americans had the idea to create schools that would encourage the integration and social interaction of children from different cultures. “German Americans, perhaps representing 10 percent of the population, established bilingual programs in many public schools” (Shaefer, 2011, "Settlement Patterns"). Education and enhancing the knowledge of the new generations has always been a top priority for people living in America. By trying to enforce a constructive environment for kids to learn how to better communicate with each other and the world around them, the German Americans exercised the American culture in increasing communication and education. Men Who Built America

...The Men Who Built America Part 1 Two hundred years ago the United States of America was not what it is today. After the original thirteen colonies gained freedom from the U.K. the country continued to grow and prosper; however, it wasn't until after the civil war, when the industrial revolution began, till America began its rise to becoming one of the top economies in the world. This was due to the abundance of businesses that we're started by America's elite. However, some of the people who contributed most to America's rise did not come from wealth. Cornelius Vanderbilt, one of the wealthiest Americans of the 19th century, was not born with an abundance of money. He worked hard to build the empire he created. As a kid he worked with his father on a ferry that transported goods around New York. After working as a steamboat captain he invested in steamboats and cultivated one of the country's largest steamship operators. He was a fear and ruthless and gained a reputation for it. Vanderbilt also knew potential when he saw it. In the 1860s, he shifted his focus towards railroads and built another empire. His fierceness made him one of the best entrepreneurs in history and when he died he was worth more than $100 million. Vanderbilt, however, wasn't the only entrepreneur that knew opportunity when they saw it. John D. Rockefeller knew when and how to take risks. Rockefeller knew that oil was the future of America, but he also knew oil was extremely costly to mine.......

Built to Change

...According to Edward Lawler III and Christopher Worley, "Excellence is about change. We would not have said this in the 1980s or perhaps even in the 1990s. Today it almost goes without saying. Most organizations simply cannot sustain excellent performance unless they are capable of changing. As the rate of change in the business environment continues to increase, the premium on organizations' being able to change is growing ever more significant. Senior managers in particular need to constantly ask themselves whether they are providing the kind of leadership and direction to their corporation that will allow it to change when needed.” (Built to Change preface) In the past, people believe that a stable corporation model is the best way for a company to change and improve. However, today’s business environment shows that building an adaptable organization is the best way to create a successful company. If the organization is able to change fast, it will possess higher competitiveness than others. It means they can survive in the rapidly evolving business climate. To build a changeable organization the leader should follow three main points: creating a new organization model, setting up a new operation strategy, and drafting a changing plan with details that employees can follow. Cooperation is the most important method for a company if they would like to change quickly. That means the leader does not only need to confirm that the entire departments can work together, but she...

Built to Last

...Book Review of Built to Last (Best of the Best) Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies is a book written by Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras.. It was published in the Year 1994. This Book is a result of Six year research project how visionary companies are established. While reading this book, I found that there are 2 objectives No.1 to learn the characteristics of Visionary companies 2. To highlight the practical and analytical and logical approach of doing a research so that they influence the practice of management. This Book will also be helpful for those people who have a certain vision in their minds of establishing their business. The research is based on true and practice examples with thorough research work. It is said to be one of the most influential books with respect to management. In the 1st Chapter Best of Best it clearly defines what a visionary company is. According to Author the company is a visionary company who has a clear mission of making money and making people happy. It is also combined with core values and pertaining big goals. He also says that that they are established before 1950’s. , well admired by knowledgeable people, have gone through multiple product or service life cycles. I completely agree that a visionary company has to have clear goals and the ability to sustain them. But it is not necessary that it should be established before 1950. There are visionary companies that established after 1950. For example Reliance......

The Last

...Benjamin Lucas COMM240 – Interpersonal Paper The Last I recall a brightly lit room on a Sunday morning, as I kissed her on the forehead, “I love you…” Slowly she opened her eyes and as she sat next to me, “Hey… Um… How many were there before me?” she asked. “Like, how many girls did you love before me?” “Love? Five…” I stated. “I loved five women before you.” The disappointment in her eyes after a sigh, though she smiled… “What are their names?” “…Who, What, When, Where, Why…” I said to her. “Can you tell me about them?” “Who I loved, was a girl from college. I wasn’t exactly close to her, but with some superficial facts and a few interactions over a semester, you know, like most guys fantasizing over girls they barely know, I filled in the blanks like a fairytale author. And who she became in my head was probably more than the reality. She was a third year, sorority girl, and yeah, I was an infatuated freshman, sure, but the several times you get to spend together outside of class… It really allowed me to see, she also had a good heart and a bright spirit. The only problem was, so did just about every other guy. And while she turned me down nicely, I swear… There were times when it seemed like the cliché sorority girl may have felt something for the typical awkward freshman.” “What I loved, was an old friend, but she was more than just a friend. We met early in college and kept in touch through the years. We saw each other grow, and change...

...whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11). They studied the scriptures. In His instructions to Israel concerning the holy anointing oil, the Lord warned, “It shall not be poured on man’s flesh” (Exodus 30:32). The purpose of Yah’s Spirit is never the exaltation of man. It is never to make the preacher seem great. It is rather to set Yah’s people apart from the world for His exclusive use, which is to exalt the Anointed Ones and manifest His presence in the earth. In addition to the warning of Yeshua Himself concerning the coming of false anointed ones in the end-times, Jude wrote that certain men had crept in unnoticed, who turn the truth of Yah into lewdness and deny Yah and and his Anointed (Jude 4). Paul warned that in the last days, “evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13). Peter stated flatly, “There will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.” He warned that “many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.” He explained that “by covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words” (2 Peter 2:1-3). These are all descriptions of the false anointed ones. We are dangerously naive to think that such men are not among us today and that everyone who preaches or teaches the Word of Yah is a true witness of Yah's true anointed.......

How the Pyramids Were Built

...Assignment 1 The mystery behind how the pyramids were built The Pyramids at Giza remain one of the most amazing architectural works in history and the Great Pyramid stands as one of the last surviving wonders of the ancient world. There are many theories revolving around the construction of Egypt’s pyramids: one of which is that the Hebrews slaves under the control of the pharaoh Khufu built the pyramids. Another theory suggests that human beings were not involved in the building of the pyramids but instead these structures were built by extra-terrestrial or alien forces. The first of the theories involves a famous Greek historian called Herodotus who traveled to Egypt around 430 B.C. Based upon his observation and findings, Herodotus came to the conclusion that the pyramids were built by demoralized Hebrew slaves working under the command of the immoral pharaoh named Khufu. Throughout the years and until today, this is the theory that is accepted by most people. However, researchers and archeologists have yet to provide hard evidence proving the theory. The theory suggests a vast number of slaves were available to build the pyramids under the labor conditions of that time. According to mainstream archeology, there is no proof whatsoever of slavery existing near Giza during the time when the pyramids were thought to, have been built. Even ancient arts or architecture of the Egyptians do not show any records of slavery ever being used to build the pyramids. Also,......
