Fall of Ibm Swot and Pest Analysis

...A. 1. SWOT Analysis Strengths IBM’s continued domination of the global market produced record increases in revenues every year, with most of the revenues coming from its highly successful System/360 and System/370 mainframe series. These powerful mainframes, which fully automated a company’s manual information processing systems, became the industry standard that competitors tried to match. Apart from this, IBM’s high-priced lease strategy, backed by excellent customer service, also contributed to the rapid rise of the company’s fortunes. This leasing system tied the company to its customers, thus guaranteeing a steady cash flow. Over the years, IBM’s traditional focus on service, combined with a successful sales force, always gave it a competitive advantage. Another of IBM’s strengths is its successful alliances and joint ventures with computer, software, and marketing companies such as Intel and Microsoft. These ventures helped IBM achieve product innovation and differentiation and enter new markets. IBM’s contention system can also be considered as strength. In this system, project teams design competing product prototypes and a series of committees at all managerial levels debate the costs and benefits of each project over a time period. This resulted to the approval of generally successful projects. Furthermore, the product group structure which was implemented during the restructuring of the ‘90s proved to be very successful. In this structure, the divisions......

PEST and SWOT analysis are the tools used to find out the current status and position of an organization or individual in relation to their external environment and current role. They can then be used as a basis for future planning and strategic management. PEST analysis is a concept in marketing principles. Moreover, this concept is used as a tool by companies to track the environment they’re operating in or are planning to launch a new project, product or service. PEST is a mnemonic which in its expanded form denotes P for Political, E for Economic, S for Social, T for Technological, L for Legal and E for Environmental. It gives a bird’s eye view of the whole environment from many different angles that one wants to check and keep a track of while contemplating on a certain idea/plan. A PEST analysis is often conducted prior to SWOT analysis. The data gathered in PEST analysis is used as the “external issues” in a SWOT analysis. A SWOT Analysis is a tool that identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of an organization. Specifically, SWOT is a basic, straightforward model that assesses what an organization can and cannot do as well as its potential opportunities and threats. The method of SWOT analysis is to take the information from an environmental analysis and separate it into internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external issues (opportunities and threats). Once this is completed, SWOT analysis determines......

Carlsberg Diversification

...Considerations to be taken into account by Carlsberg Malaysia in the event of diversification in producing non – alcoholic carbonated drinks in Malaysia. Carlsberg Malaysia is embarking on diversifying its product range by producing non-alcoholic carbonated drinks with a prospect of a return in investment (ROI) in the 12% range. Two areas of considerations should be looked into if Carlsberg Malaysia wants to proceed with this diversification program. 1st Method Firstly, Carlsberg could emulate the methodology employed by its competitor, Guiness, the producer of Malta non-alcoholic drink, by using existing manufacturing facilities, distributor outlets, handling equipment and sharing the same inventory listings in their production. Hence, gaining halal certification is extremely doubtful and the Muslim market could not be penetrated. Carlsberg could however benefitted from the exemption of paying excise duties and ad valorem tax. Furthermore they could display their new product at all non-alcoholic beverage counters in the market. 2nd Method Secondly, Carlsberg could embark on a totally new marketing strategy of its product by giving importance to ensure that the product is syariah compliance and certified halal by the Islamic regulators. This is to allow Carlsberg to gain an immediate access to the Muslim market, which in size and numbers are much bigger. However Carlsberg should be more conscious of the general perception linking the word Carlsberg to alcohol......

...the case, Ratio Analyses of Historical and Projected Financial Statements, the sales growth rate and the assets growth rate are not change consistently. As the ratio in Table 1 shows, from 1997 to 2000, when the sales growth rate increased significantly, the assets growth rate declined or maintained stable. Therefore, there is an urgent need to increase the investment to meet their sales growth goal. Table [ 1 ] Asset Utilization | 1997 | 1998 | 1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 |   | Actual | Actual | Actual | Actual | Proj'd | Proj'd | Sales growth rate % | 4.0% | 7.9% | 22.2% | 12.6% | 14.8% | 12.6% | Assets growth rate % | 6.0% | -0.9% | 6.0% | 4.5% | 10.9% | 8.4% | b) Investment environment in Ukraine i) Ukraine has a relatively large population of 52 million and strategic location within Central and Eastern Europe, making it particularly attractive. ii) From 1995, the Ukrainian government supported the privatizations and market reforms, which suggested a valuable chance to expand, since their privatizations and market reforms were still continuing. iii) Since their beer was very popular for its full-bodied, malty taste, the fragmented nature of the Ukrainian beer industry provided opportunities for Deutsche Brauerei to get more sales....

The devices accounted for 81% of the revenue followed by service (14.4%),software (1.7%) and other (2.8%). Although the company is doing very well financially, it is not immune the pressure of external forces and following section highlights some of the external forces impact on RIM. The PEST analysis and SWOT analysis provides an insight in to the factors which will affect the industry which in turn will also affect the companies that operate within the industry. PEST analysis: • Political The fairly friendly political climate in North America especially in USA has helped the smart phone industry especially RIM to flourish as the recent survey by Nielsen pointed out that the users of smart phones will overtake feature phone users by 2011(Nielsen wire 2010) . The actual challenge for RIM has been in countries like China, India and UAE where the countries have raised concerns over the security feature the blackberry provides to users as it becomes hard to monitor for the government authorities (BBC 2010). RIM has also been scrutinized in countries like Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Kuwait, and Egypt for......

...European Conference on Research Methodology for Business and Management Studies Using PEST Analysis as a Tool for Refining and Focusing Contexts for Information Systems Research Guo Chao Alex Peng, Miguel Baptista Nunes Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield, Regent Court, Sheffield, S1 4DP, UK lip05gcp@sheffield.ac.uk, j.m.nunes@sheffield.ac.uk Abstract It is common for inexperienced researchers and research students to aim at investigating very wide contexts such as countries (e.g. China, India, UK), regions (e.g. the Arab Countries) or even continents (e.g. Africa). Such studies in Information Systems (IS) are not only unrealistic and potentially unfeasible, but may result in findings that are neither significant nor meaningful. Research supervisors often face difficulties in explaining and resolving these common pitfalls in research proposals. This paper proposes the use of Political, Economic, Social and Technological (PEST, also often referred to as STEP) analysis as a tool to identify narrower contexts and focus research questions around feasible and meaningful regional contexts. It illustrates this process with the results of an analysis carried out as part of an ongoing PhD research project. The project aims to investigate the barriers and risks associated with the post-implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in Chinese companies. PEST analysis was used to define an appropriate region in China (i.e. Guangdong), as well......

...Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. Ukraineborders the Russian Federation to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west,Romania and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It has an area of 603,628 km², making it the second largest contiguous country on the European continent, after the Russian Federation. According to a popular and well established theory, the medieval state of Kievan Rus was established by the Varangians in the 9th century as the first historically recorded East Slavic state which emerged as a powerful nation in the Middle Ages until it disintegrated in the 12th century. By the middle of the 14th century, Ukrainian territories were under the rule of three external powers—the Golden Horde, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Kingdom of Poland. After the Great Northern War (1700–1721) Ukraine was divided between a number of regional powers and, by the 19th century, the largest part of Ukraine was integrated into the Russian Empire with the rest under Austro-Hungarian control. A chaotic period of incessant warfare ensued, with several internationally recognized attempts at independence from 1917 to 1921, following World War I and the Russian Civil War. Ukraine emerged from its own civil war, and on December 30, 1922 Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic became one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian SSR's territory was......
