...Excerpt from, Bartolomé de las Casas, “In Defense of the Indians” (1550) Contrary to the stereotype of their monolithic wickedness in the subjugation of the Americas' indigenous peoples, some Spaniards protested the brutality of conquest and colonial rule. None was more influential than Bartolome de las Casas, the long-lived Dominican bishop of Chiapas in Mexico. Although later to be blamed for supposedly exaggerating his countrymen's cruelty and advocating the enslavement of Africans instead of Indians as a "lesser evil," the aristocratically born Andalusian was a tireless champion of Indian rights. His writings were widely read in colonial Peru. This excerpt from “In Defense of the Indians," a passionate response to court theologian Juan Gines de Sepulvedas's assertion of Indian inferiority, give a flavor of his forthright criticism of Spain’s role in the New World. And so what man of sound mind will approve a war against men who are harmless, ignorant, gentle, temperate, unarmed, and destitute of every human defense? For the results of such a war are very surely the loss of the souls of that people who perish without knowing God and without the support of the sacraments, and, for the survivors, hatred and loathing of the Christian religion. Hence the purpose God intends, ... for the attainment of which he suffered so much, may be frustrated by the evil and cruelty that our men wreak on them with......

Bartolome de Las Casa

...Augusta Seremeth September 2, 2013 GSR220-03 Dr. Sanchez Bartolome de las Casas Bartolome de las Casas was a Spanish Dominican who became famous for his defense of the rights of the native people of the Americas. He has been recognized by the history as a great man who stood up to a corrupt system. Bartolome de las Casas decided that he wanted to be a priest so his father sent him to the best schools, the University of Salamanca, and the University of Valladolid. He studied Canon Law and earned two degrees. In 1502, Bartolome de las Casa finally came to America. He has seen a lot of things like watching people die by the exploitation and disease. He learned more about the sad situation of the natives when he was studying. In 1514, he finally decided he could no longer be involved in the exploitation of the natives. The first experience he tried was convinced Spanish authorities to allow him to try and save natives by taking them out of slavery and placing them in free towns. But he failed because the region he wanted to experiment was selected had been heavily raided by slavers. So, it is so hard to overcome. In 1537, Bartolome de las Casa wanted to try again to show that natives could be controlled peacefully and the violence were unnecessary. His second experiment finally worked, the natives were brought under Spanish control peacefully. The experiment was called Verapaz or “true peace.” Unfortunately, the colonists took the lands, and enslave the natives and......

...Casa de Diseno case study Pin It In January 2007, Teresa Leal was named treasurer of Casa de Diseño. She decided that she could best orient herself by systematically examining each area of the company's financial operations. She began by studying the firm's short-term financial activities. Casa de Diseño is located in southern California and specializes in a furniture line called "Ligne Moderna." Of high quality and contemporary design, the furniture appeals to the customer who wants something unique for his or her home or apartment. Most Ligne Moderna furniture is built by special order, because a wide variety of upholstery, accent trimming, and colors are available. The product line is distributed through exclusive dealership arrangements with well-established retail stores. Casa de Diseño's manufacturing process virtually eliminates the use of wood. Plastic and metal provide the basic framework, and wood is used only for decorative purposes. Casa de Diseño entered the plastic-furniture market in late 2001. The company markets its plastic-furniture products as indoor-outdoor items under the brand name "Futuro." Futuro plastic furniture emphasizes comfort, durability, and practicality and is distributed through wholesalers. The Futuro line has been very successful, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the firm's sales and profits in 2006. Casa de Diseño anticipates some additions to the Futuro line and also some limited change of direction in its......

Casa

...CASA CASA is a non-profit homeless shelter whose mission is to serve families with children. It provides more than 100 beds, allocated so that families are housed together in single units. The agency employs four case managers and one case management supervisor. Case management focuses on assuring that residents have access to community medical care, including general medicine, psychiatric services, dental, and vision services. In addition, case managers coordinate access to community services, such as transportation to vocational training and workplace sites, places of worship, and 12-step meetings (for those in recovery). Finally, case managers assure that children’s educational needs are met through access to school and after-school programs. These services, of course, are provided by organizations and agencies external to CASA. CASA employs three mental health workers and one clinical supervisor. Mental health services provide individual, family, and group counseling to address residents’ problems in living and general mental wellness concerns. In addition, the agency employs an office manager, who coordinates food services (provided by an outside vendor), housecleaning and grounds maintenance (also provided by vendors), safety and security, and general day-to-day operations. Coordination with other area homeless shelters is a vital part of office management, as there are times when there are more people seeking assistance than CASA can serve. The office......

Casa Del Libro

...ASSIGNMENT STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT: CASADELLIBRO.COM The definition of the target is basic in order to choose which platform (Unix or Microsoft) is more suitable for Casa del Libro, and the target is pretty clear: to position the chain in the main Spanish cities and to become the top name for book sales in the national market. In addition we should also not forget about the rivals: El Corte ingles, which by that time has already successfully entered the on-line books sales market and FNAC that was slightly behind but still able to enter the competition. The decision to just change the platform to the cheaper and simpler version that the team in my opinion will find easier to deal with seems to be a very easy one, but it not as easy as it seems. If I were Nacho Somalo I would prefer the UNIX platform, because of the following reasons. In the first place, the Microsoft platform that has the big advantage that the price is cheap, even though its maintenance does not exist and nobody from the team has tested it and no one can guarantee that it would not need changes and additional investments. Though The UNIX platform is twice as much expensive as the Microsoft one, it has already been tested, the team has found drawbacks which can be removed in the future. Secondly, upon one of the strongest points of the UNIX system is availability. For the online book store the uptime of a website is absolutely critical, because being unavailable even for some minutes...
