Descriptions and illustrations: A) I can’t initiate communication with people I first meet. I feel that it is rude to just start talking to people I’m not familiar with. This is because I’m not sure if people are going to respond to me in a positive way. One Saturday morning, I was just walking and asked a person what time it was, and he stared at me and walked away. I was not sure why he did so but this reinforced my feeling of not initiating communication with strangers. B) I can’t use specific language to avoid my audience’s misinterpretation. I am a non-native speaker. It seems that what I say doesn’t come across the native speakers due to the fact that my native language affects the way I pronounce English words. This always makes confusion to my listeners. One Sunday morning, I went to buy some groceries and I couldn’t find some of the items I was looking for. I asked a store attendant and he kept asking me what I was saying. He also looked puzzled and I spent a lot of time repeating and clarifying. C) I can’t deliver my messages to my audiences without being anxious. I normally don’t like presenting my ideas in front of a crowd. I feel anxious and don’t remember key concepts I want to address. Informally this system has been left up to each individual employee. However, the new formal system created will require employees to use one customer management system. Our aim is to apply a more formal management structure to help achieve company goals and deliver better value to the customer as well as assisting in the success of Riordan Manufacturing. March 20, 2013 - 3:00am Patrick Sanaghan, Mary Hinton and Steve Riccio The term "stealth change" can be used to describe how things seem to be accomplished in higher education. These are incremental changes over time that eventually accumulate and yield a significant shift. Unfortunately, and often without coherence, the major change that is introduced lacks little support or campus awareness. Recently, one of the authors spoke to an aspiring group of medical school deans on navigating the complexities of change. Their question: "Why is meaningful change so difficult to achieve?" They weren’t interested in change "theories" which we are all too familiar with, but in results-based, practical methods to guide future initiatives. Conversations such as these are beginning to penetrate higher education as boards, presidents and other senior leaders all understand that change is a prerequisite for surviving and thriving in this era of uncertainty. John Kotter, a well-respected professor from Harvard University, as well as other researchers, tell us that about 70 percent of all of change efforts fail. Active listening is a very important part of communication because it is what helps us as communicators to respond clearly and completely because we have listened and understood completely.
