...Donald Martinez Professor, Gary Steel WRTG101S 27 November 2012 Social Media Equals Dangers Every day, people are on social media like robots. It is as if the world never existed without it. Social media’s gain in popularity is both exciting and alarming. Facebook is the most popular social media today. “Facebook currently has 901 million active users worldwide.” (Curtan) People sit on sites like Facebook all day and interact with friends and strangers worldwide. Wilber said, “For many people that are stuck at home, for whatever reason, social media opens new doors. Due to the fact that there is a high unemployment rate, I find that there are so many people on different disability websites, and that's their way of connecting so they don't feel isolated." (Curtan) In real life though, these same people are not socializing face-to-face. The human interactions are not there. According to Dr. Aric Sigman, a psychologist and biologist, “Social networking websites like Facebook pose a serious risk to your health.” (NaturalBias.com) In addition, some people use Facebook responsibly, and others do not. Many people neglect their real life for one full of virtual friends. Social media, Facebook in particular, is not only a great invention but also a dangerous invention. These social media friendships on sites like Facebook have two sides. There are people known personally and people not known personally. "I try to reach out to a lot of women in different countries —......

...Proceedings of the 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences - 2009 A Conceptual and Operational Definition of ‘Social Role’ in Online Community Eric Gleave University of Washington egleave@u.washington.edu Howard T. Welser Ohio University welser@ohio.edu Abstract Both online and off, people frequently perform particular social roles. These roles organize behavior and give structure to positions in local networks. As more of social life becomes embedded in online systems, the concept of social role becomes increasingly valuable as a tool for simplifying patterns of action, recognizing distinct user types, and cultivating and managing communities. This paper standardizes the usage of the term ‘social role’ in online community as a combination of social psychological, social structural, and behavioral attributes. Beyond the conceptual definition, we describe measurement and analysis strategies for identifying social roles in online community. We demonstrate this process in two domains, Usenet and Wikipedia, identifying key social roles in each domain. We conclude with directions for future research, with a particular focus on the analysis of communities as role ecologies. 1. INTRODUCTION Social life has moved online. From discussion boards, to wikis, to social networking sites, people do things together through digital communication. Those interactions leave behind complex records of who did what, when, under what context,...

...Social Media Social media has become more popular and users have expanded from teens to young adults and now even people over the age of 50. However, many people are still unsure if social media is a good or bad thing, as some people think it’s amazing, whereas others are worried about the impact it has on people’s lives. Personally I feel that it is a good thing; however, after researching this topic, it has been brought into extreme clarity for me that actually there is a rather dark side to these networking sites. Firstly, social media is a great way to boost your confidence, allowing people who are rather shy to express themselves without human interaction. As a result of this, obviously when there is no human interaction, it makes it rather easy to be negative towards another person. One of the main reasons that people may say something negative or nasty towards someone else on social media is because you can’t see the reaction of the person; the fact that you are sitting behind a device of some sort blocks out the thought that on the other side is a real person with real thoughts and feelings and the fact that you don’t see the other person eye to eye and face to face means that, when someone does say something mean or negative towards another person, it creates the illusion that it isn’t really happening. In addition to this, social networking allows people to communicate quickly and also helps people practise and improve their social skills (which is always a......

Social Media or Anti-Social Media?

...Social Media or Anti-social Media? In 2013 a study found that teenagers were experiencing a decline in intimate friendships as they chose Facebook over face-to-face communications. The image above displays a young girl on her computer; she seems to be focusing intensely on her computer screen. She is wearing a black jacket with black eye shadow and she looks exhausted, which is associated usually with emo teens or depression. The title on the image contradicts purpose and meaning of what social-media means to most people. Social media was administered to help keep friends and families in contact from all over the world, but according surveys taken, social media is actually stopping people from communicating face-to-face. Why has social media made people more antisocial rather than making them social? Why has social media replaced outdoor activities and face to face conversations almost completely? How are parents or adults stepping up to help make their children or friends more sociable? Why is social media an escape outlet for people’s emotions? How does it contribute to making people anti-social? What are reasons why social media can make a positive impact on our daily lives? The girl’s black eye shadow and black hoodie portray a state of loneliness and depression, proposing that social media is causing our youth to be depressed or anti-social. Aside from the fact that the girl is on a social media site she stares at the screen with a blank expression. Conforming to......

...world today, we heavily rely on social media as a means of communication. Not only has it become popular over the last few years, but it is also corrupting our world now and the future to come. Parents can hardly have conversations with their children because they are attached to social media and the newest technology that has evolved. Although social media seems like a harmless way of staying connected to the rest of the world, it is important we understand the benefits and complications that come with it. One of the many complications of social media is the lack of communicating face to face, which can stultify the young minds of this world. ...GOALS AND STRATEGIES OF SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING Good morning, how was your night? Or how are your family members are usually the most common conversation on phone calls. However when social media came into existence, it provides other avenues where these and other conversations can occur. Apart from having conversations with friends and loved ones, social media provide new opportunities for businesses to market their good and services. The question now is what is social media, what role does it play in marketing, what are the goals and strategies of social media marketing. Unlike the past, traditional marketing strategy such as television commercials and newspaper advertisements do not give much impact to the customers these days (Or, 2010).
