Maintaining a Safe, Healthy Learning Environment

When running a child care center, one of the most important things is to provide a quality learning environment for the children. It is necessary to keep in mind the steps and precautions needed to establish and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment. As a teacher of a young preschool class, I put all my effort into making sure I meet all these requirements. Every classroom is run different and it is important for parents to know what kind of environment they are putting their child in. Keep reading to get a further understanding of how I personally run my class and the steps I take to make sure my class meets the competency goal.
One of my goals in the functional area of safe is to maintain a current and updated list of phone numbers for contacting parents and emergency services, such as poison control, fire department, and medical help. I also ask parents/guardians to inform me of any phone number changes. I also maintain first aid supplies and know the basic first aid procedures for young children, such as choking and treating cuts and wounds. I ensure that all safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, are in place and operable. I also use a weekly safety list to ensure that I have checked all parts of my classroom to make sure it’s all safe. Also, I personally am always around to supervise the children in all indoor and outdoor activities. Lastly, I require written parental authorization before allowing people other than parents to pick up children from the class.
One of my goals in the functional area of healthy is to prevent the spread of germs in my child care. This is an important goal for the age group children in my care because young children still aren’t used to common sense about health and sanitation and germs can be easily spread when children are in such close…...

...1. List of "I can't" behaviors: A.) I can't admit that I am wrong with my friends. There has been many times where I never want to swallow my pride and admit that I am in the wrong. I have the hardest time accepting that I am not right. Even if I can't justify my side of the story I never want to be the first to make peace because I am so stuck on my own perspective. B.) I can't stop starting arguments with my girlfriend. I am very narrow minded that I have difficulties understanding the other person. I am always the one to jump into conclusions even when it is irrelevant to the topic. It does not have to be anything big for me to find a way to argue about anything because I always end up finding a way to have something to say about. C.) I can't accept feedbacks from my mother without getting into an argument. Because my mother is not fluent in English and I don't speak Hindi (Indian) to my mother, there is a language barrier between us. It is very difficult for my mother and I to communicate because she does not understand a lot of the things I need to tell her or vice versa. More than half of the time we spend arguing than talking to one another. D.) I can't stop holding grudges over little unnecessary things. I noticed that if I'm stuck in a situation about for instance, I tell you to do something and it doesn't get done how I specifically want it done, my friends/family will never hear the end of it. I will hold people accountable for things that normally aren't......

...Competency 1 Functional Area #1 - Safe: To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each Childs physical need. Making sure the class room and playground are clean and safe at all times; To accomplish this goal I complete daily safety checklists that include ensuring exits and hallways are open, electrical cords are out of reach, evacuation procedures are posted, fire extinguisher is working, emergency numbers are posted by the telephone. I check all toys and equipment the children will be using for broken or missing parts often to ensure they remain safe for use and play. Separate noisy and quiet areas, to keep clear pathways and to use furniture arrangement strategies that reduce behavior and safety concerns and promote learning. I am trained in emergency evacuation procedures and plans to remove all children from the classroom and/or building in the event of a tornado or fire. To prevent and reduce injuries I involve my children in all safety practices such as creating a “safety board” that the children create about safe choices they make and post it at their level. I model with my actions and words safety practices for example when crossing the street look for cars, during monthly fire drills I remain calm and walk the children through the procedure. ...Competency Goal 1 To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment FA1: Safe Goals: • To provide an environment that is positive, nurturing, and encourages children to develop their own safe and healthy habits. • To provide safe environment to prevent and reduce injuries. • To report all incidents and accidents. Activities – Indoors Maintaining a safe environment for my class is very important. The first way to obtain this goal is to have a strong partnership with my parents. Everything I teach the children, I encourage the parents to reinforce. Having the children and parents well informed on our safety practices, makes it easier to keep it safe inside and outside the classroom. Activities – Outdoors I maintain a safe environment on the playground. The first step is to always have all the equipment checked. Having a professional annually inspect every aspect of the equipment ensures the safety of the children. When bringing the children to the playground there are several basic routines that we practice which increase the safety of our children. First, children must have a partner at all times. The children must hold their partner's hand and walk in twos. Activities-Indoors/Outdoors As a teacher I believe safety is one of the most important things to give to a child besides health and education. A child and adult should feel safe as soon  as they walk into the building in the morning. I practice......

I always treat my daycare parents with dignity and respect; I always respect their wishes and commands when it comes to their child. Competency Goal Five

...Competency goal five is to ensure a well-run, purposeful program responsive to participant needs. In order to ensure a well-run program, organization is a must. I like to arrive early at work, so I can prepare the room for the day. I get daily sheets for the kids’ information ready. I mix the sanitizing solution for the day and vacuum the floor, if needed. Vacuuming in the morning won’t disrupt the children when they arrive. Before parents arrive, I check to see if the children need diapers, wipes, or a change of clothing so I can remind the parents. To prevent boredom, the toys are changed out every so often. Along with changing out, the toys are checked for cleanliness and safety. The toddlers in my care put everything in their mouths. To begin the day, the children are signed in on a weekly roll-call sheet. On each child’s daily sheet, changing times, meal times, and what and how a child ate are recorded on their paper. Baby wipes, diapers and cubbies are kept at an easy reach. The children’s diapers and wipes are labeled. Each child has their own cubby labeled with their name, with a sheet and blanket and their change of clothing in the cubby. Preparing things before children arrive decreases the level of stress throughout the day. To me, morning is the most important time of day. I enjoy greeting each parent, and I believe they feel better talking with their child’s caregiver before leaving their child each day. The relationship between parent and...

Cda Competency Goal 1

...Competency Goal 1: Safe, Healthy, Learning Environment In my child care setting, I work hard to provide all children with a safe and healthy learning environment. I research and follow strict standards available from the state related to preventing and reducing injury and illness, helping children feel safe, following sound nutrition and fitness practices, and creating an enriching learning environment. My goal is to set up and maintain an environment that reduces the risk of injury to children. Because children lack the judgment to avoid hazards and because children learn by doing and interacting closely with others and their environment, injury can happen frequently in a child care setting. I accomplish this goal by keeping furniture and equipment in good repair and only having age-appropriate materials available to children. I inspect my environment (inside and outside) every day and I alert my director when I see a potential hazard. If there is an injury, I practice the correct First Aid guidelines and I inform the parent and the office in an accident report. I make sure that children are always cared for by qualified, responsible and healthy adults, so I make sure that staff files are complete and up-to-date. I am also diligent about maintaining emergency cards on each child and making sure that only authorized persons are dropping off and picking up. I am also always watching my children for signs of child abuse and neglect. I also want children to feel safe in......
