Angels and Demons

...In Angels and Demons (2000), Dan Brown introduces Robert Langdon, the Harvard symbologist who would later star in Brown’s worldwide best seller The Da Vinci Code (2003). The two books share numerous characteristics. Though fictional, both novels claim to be built upon a base of researched facts. Both seek to revise aspects of generally accepted histories, especially those related to the Catholic Church and its relationship to free thought. And both books put Langdon in the middle of violent interactions among shadowy factions, clashes whose outcomes may well determine the future course of Western civilization. The two books differ in setting, threat, and focus. While The Da Vinci Code tackles ancient speculations about the Holy Grail, Angels and Demons involves more standard thriller fare. It puts science and religion into conflict by reviving the Illuminati, a secret society of scientists and freethinkers whose relationship with the Catholic Church has long been, Brown indicates, intimate, tangled, and not fully known. This secret society returns as a threat when the major church leaders are gathered at the Vatican to elect a new pontiff. Increasing this centuries-old tension is a more specific threat: the Illuminati claim to have stolen a rare sample of antimatter and hidden it somewhere in the Vatican. It is highly explosive if it comes in contact with normal matter, and it will do so when a protective magnetic field runs out in twenty-four hours. Add to this the fact......

Wal-Mart: Angel or Demon? You Decide ...

...Wal-Mart: Angel or Demon? You Decide . . . For better or for worse, Wal-Mart dominates the retail industry. With annual revenue of more than $379 billion, Wal-Mart ranked No. 1 in 2008 on the Fortune 500 list of the largest U.S. corporations. Wal-Mart is also the largest corporate employer in the nation; with more than two million people on its payroll (only the federal government employs more people). But beyond the basic facts, general agreement about Wal-Mart ends. Supporters portray Wal-Mart as a solid corporate citizen that fuels economic growth, while detractors criticize every dimension of Wal-Mart operations. The key arguments: Wal-Mart supporters: * Wal-Mart boosts the standard of living for its customers by offering a plethora of quality products at the lowest possible prices. And by forcing its suppliers to become more efficient, Wal-Mart drives greater productivity and competitiveness throughout the economy. * Wal-Mart boosts employment in every community where it operates, offering excellent opportunities from the entry level through management. Demonstrating the appeal of its jobs, a Wal-Mart that recently opened near Chicago received more than 25,000 applications for 325 positions. * Wal-Mart revitalizes communities by building stores in economically depressed areas. In an interview with PBS, Wal-Mart VP Bob McAdam cites the example of Panorama City, CA: “When we came into that location, the mall that we're associated with there......

Do People Have Demons

...Do People Have Demons? Afif Awad English 110-15 Professor Candace Ramirez 14 December 2012 Do People Have Demons? Gene Wilder once said “I never thought of it as God. I didn't know what to call it. I don't believe in devils, but demons I do because everyone at one time or another has some kind of a demon, even if you call it by another name, which drives them.” Demons are living with us day in and day out. Most people do not see them or even realize demons are with them. No one though has the same demon. Some people have smaller demons and others have bigger demons that can a lot of problems in a person’s life. Demons are spirits that are to be messed around with. Demons are evil spirits that want to hurt, torture, and control you as much as they can until there is nothing anyone can do. Good thing for believers in Christ as long as we got Him on are side anything is possible no matter what. It is funny how the one thing we are scared of (demons) is scared of the God Christians worship (Jesus Christ). Even with numerous accounts of demon possession in the world and movie producers constantly making movies about demonic possession many people still do not believe demons exist. In today’s society demonic possession is looked at in two ways. In the religious side they look for demonic possession and usually treat it with an exorcism using a variety of tools, but the scientific side looks at demons as non-existent and tell the patient the certain disease they are......

Descartes: Evil Demon

...Karthik Keni Phil 21 Greg Antill Part A: 1. The Evil Demon Argument In Descartes’ First Meditation, he completely shatters the foundations of his previous beliefs and then uses the evil demon argument as a platform in which he can explain the source of his beliefs. Descartes proposes the evil demon argument because he wants to instill doubt not only in himself, but also in his audience that God may not be the only “Supreme Being”. He believes God to be a good being that wouldn’t deceive us and lead our thoughts astray. The evil demon argument has the purpose of casting doubt on his belief that God is the only being who has the capability of implementing thoughts into his mind, creating doubt of the existence of an external world, and aiding his pursuit of a strong and certain foundation for all his knowledge and beliefs. In this argument, Descartes doesn’t refute the reality of a God, however I believe he presents the argument as if they both exist and that if he is being deceived it could not be from God, the good being, but the evil genius providing him with false sensory material. The primary claim of this skeptical argument is to doubt the reality of an external world that has the possibility of being created by an evil demon. Deceit could be defined in such a way that our minds are being controlled by an evil demon and that our senses of an external world are mistaken. Depicting the evil demon argument of Descartes in a science fiction way like “The Matrix,” made......

Casting Out Demons Name of Jesus

...thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour." Not only did the early church drive out evil spirits with Jesus' name, but many were also healed using the name of Jesus: Acts 4:30, "By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus." So if we try to use any other name or by not using the name of Jesus at all nothing will happen and it is most likely not inspired by God. How did Jesus' disciples go about casting out demons? Through His name. Luke 10:17 tells us, "And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name." How did the early church go about casting out demons? Through His name. Acts 16:18 tells us a story where Paul, "turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour." How are the believers today supposed to be casting out demons? Through His name. As we can see in Mark 16:17, "these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils." Authority is exercised through faith Matthew 17:19-20, "Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief..." Obviously they had the authority, but they weren't able to use it because their level of faith wasn't high enough to access the level of authority that needed to be exercised to drive out......

Demons

...Dr. Patrick A. Polk Humanities 491 30 September 2013 Demons are with us every day when we sleep, eat, work and even to some extent when we are at church. The traditions that demons have to do with are in Christianity. There are other religions where “bad spirits” are talked about but, demons derive from the devil which is associated with the Christian church. The main mode of communication that was and is so important to spreading the knowledge of demons was through the Bible and films. The Bible is the oldest dissemination of demons where it talks about Jesus calling out these spirits from inside of people. Films or movies have been the most popular form in recent times. Some characteristics of a demon include: Spirits with no physical body form, they are shape shifters, can communicate telepathically or by impressing thoughts, Require certain sacrifices and offerings for survival, able to occupy bodies and objects and control them, They are imitators and impersonators(especially of Christians, God, and prophecy), and are prone to corrupt, defy, and terrorize. This spirit is important because in a way this is proof for Christianity that there is a heaven and a hell. Demons are the children of the devil, who is the prince of darkness aka hell. If there is a hell, there is proof that there is an afterlife. All demons derived from the one of the biggest mistakes of all mankind. Adam and Eve were the first to experience, a demon in true flesh. They were both told by God to eat......

Angels and Demons

...I. In my reflection paper I chose to write about Angels and Demons. According to the scriptures that angels were created instead of eternally exiting. Colossians 1:16-17 explains: “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. The time in which they were created is not clearly specified but most likely they were created during the time when God was creating the heaven as stated in Gen 1:1. Angels where created to provide, protect, and deliver what so ever God would have them to do. Demons known as the fallen angels are the enemies of God. They are under the authority of Satan and the main goal is to disrupt God’s kingdom and creation. In this paper I will provide a Theological definition, Biblical foundation and practical application on Angels and Demons. II. Angel is derived from the Greek word angelos, which means 'messenger'. In the Hebrew language angel is originated from the word Malak which translates to messenger. According to the Old Testament the prophet Malachi took his name from the word Malak. Malachi was a messenger that prophesied about the coming messenger of the new covenant. Even though angels are usually referred to as heavenly messenger, God also used humans to deliver His messages such as the prophet Malachi. “Behold, I send my messenger......

Evil Demon

...Descartes introduced his evil genius doubt in his first meditations. His hypothesis consists of the belief that a supreme being, labeled the “evil genius” or “evil demon” could be maliciously controlling and creating in our minds an illusion of the world as we know it. A complete fabrication that would negate the simplest truths as well as our sense data. His initial goal is to find a way to question the unquestionable; what we view as absolute truths like a simple addition or substraction, what seems to be true and tested could be false because of this powerful and cunning genius. Descartes uses his evil demon argument on his quest to find truths that are unshakably true; that is, that have absolutely no doubt to them. His conclusion is that the only statement that can be unshakably and undeniably true is “I am, I exist”. Which is to say that if we are capable of having thoughts about our existence then we must exist in some way. Even if an evil genius is maliciously pumping information and illusions about the physical world that we live in, if I can think about my existence then I must exist in some way, wether it be in this world or in the evil genius’s world. I believe that Descartes’s evil genius argument is successful at its goal is to isolate what is absolutely and undoubtedly true. Descartes felt that during his lifetime many things he thought to be true turned out false over the years. Therefore he felt that he needed to......

Angels and Demons

...The discussion of good versus evil has been in debate for centuries. Within this debate the very existence of God is questioned. The movie Angels and Demons supports both of these thoughts by indicating that science is a presence in the church. The Illuminatie is a group of scientists that for centuries tries to destroy the idea of a God. They believe only in scientific fact and that there is no place in this world for faith or a God because they are unexplainable events in life. With the beliefs of the church under fire, they responded with killing members of the Illuminaties to protect their beliefs in “the name of god” This poses the conflict originally brought up, good versus evil and is there a God? If God is the ultimate good then he or his followers should never kill for the greater good of anything. However, a theist would say that without pain and suffering then there would be no virtue (Burr, Goldinger 139) If there is no virtue then the is no need for a God and no need for a group, like the church, to lead us down the path of good and wash us from our sins. The presence of evil is a necessity if you are to believe in God. As the Illuminatie’s seek revenge on the church for the injustice placed on their society they pick a time where the church is under stress from the loss of their highest leader, the Pope. The reenactment of the death of the Illuminatie members becomes a public display of evil. Pain and suffering on human beings, again, in the......

Blue Demon Bank

...Blue Demon Bank expects that the Mexican peso will depreciate against the dollar from its spot rate of $.15 to $.14 in 10 days.  The following interbank lending and borrowing rates exist:   Lending Rate Borrowing Rate U.S. dollar 8.0% 8.3% Mexican peso 8.5% 8.7%   * Assume that Blue Demon Bank has a borrowing capacity of either $10 million or 70 million pesos in the interbank market, depending on which currency it wants to borrow. * How could Blue Demon Bank attempt to capitalize on its expectations without using deposited funds?  Estimate the profits that could be generated from this strategy.   ANSWER: Blue Demon Bank can capitalize on its expectations about pesos (MXP) as follows:   1. Borrow MXP70 million   2. Convert the MXP70 million to dollars:   MXP70,000,000 × $.15 = $10,500,000   3. Lend the dollars through the interbank market at 8.0% annualized over a 10day period.  The amount accumulated in 10 days is:   $10,500,000 × [1 + (8% × 10/360)] = $10,500,000 × [1.002222] = $10,523,333   4. Repay the peso loan.  The repayment amount on the peso loan is:   MXP70,000,000 × [1 + (8.7% × 10/360)] = 70,000,000 × [1.002417]=MXP70,169,167   5. Based on the expected spot rate of $.14, the amount of dollars needed to repay the peso loan is:   MXP70,169,167 × $.14 = $9,823,683   6. After repaying the loan, Blue Demon Bank will have a......

These were ordinary people were able to overtake armed, savagely trained terrorists. They were empowered by the hope of saving lives, which they did through their brave sacrifice. This kind of hope inspires many emotions and feelings. It allows people to convince themselves that what they want to happen will happen. This effect travels far beyond the mind. As hope strengthens ones mental ability, it allows a person to fully utilize him or herself. This hope is both a drive and inspiration. It works for positive and negative causes, but it does work to strengthen and empower a person. In the novel, Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown, several characters are empowered by hope; a hope that is the inspiration that causes people to be all that they can be. Robert Langdon, a scholar of religious symbology and professor at Harvard University, made a life changing decision based on hope. Langdon was phoned by a total stranger in the middle of the night. This stranger, Maximillian Kohler, was demanding to see Langdon in person. Langdon rejected this demand, but he soon changed his mind after being sent a fax of a dead body. Branded on the dead body was an eerie symbol both unknown and familiar to Langdon. Langdon recognized the symbol to be the symbol of the ancient brotherhood of the Illuminati. Langdon, and other Illuminati experts alike, have spent......

Regardless of their previous state, it stands without argument that they fell, and that they seek embodiment in man. The Word of God tells us this in Matthew 12: 17 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 18 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 19 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there. . . . We also learn about demons seeking embodiment in man in the story of the Gadarene demoniac in Mark 5. The madman of Gadara was possessed with the devil and had a legion of spirits in him. If......

Characters Robert Langdon – a Harvard professor of religious symbology, that becomes a witness of the resurrection of an ancient secret society known as Illuminati. A very intelligent, sharp-minded, and a warm –hearted person. I really like this character because of his ability to understand the situation and try everything to help others. Quote: “Religions are not born from scratch. They grow from one another. Modern religion is a collage… an assimilated historical record of man’s quest to understand the divine.” (p 108) This quote represents one of the views on religion in this novel. As a man, that studied different kinds of religions all his life he looks at it only like another myth, but respects it’s influence on people.
