DISCOVERING ONE’S TALENT: LEARNING FROM ACADEMIC SPECIALIZATION author OFER MALAMUD*

The author examines an exogenous difference in the timing of academic Abstract specialization within the British system of higher education to test whether education yields information about one’s match quality in different fields of study. In distinguishing between systems requiring early and late specialization, he predicts the likelihood of an individual switching to an occupation unrelated to one’s field of study. If higher education serves mainly to provide specific skills, the model predicts more switching in a system requiring late specialization since the cost of switching is lower in terms of foregone skills. Using the Universities Statistical Record from 1972 to 1993 and the 1980 National Survey of Graduates and Diplomates, he finds that individuals who specialize early, as in the case of England, are more likely to switch to an unrelated occupation, implying that the benefits to increased match quality are sufficiently large to outweigh the greater loss in skills from specializing early.

Others say no, because without the liberal arts, individuals will lack the necessary skills to succeed in today’s work environment. Both sides have well supported arguments, and often when one begins to think they’ve made a decision on which they agree with, they are swayed by the other way. After reading, “Should Undergraduates Specialize?” by Patrick Allit, and, “Liberal Arts: A Practical View.” by Mark Jackson, I have formed my opinion and what I feel like is a suitable answer to the question above. I believe that students should have a choice. If they feel like they’re ready to dive into what they know they want to do, let them. But if the student feels like they aren’t one hundred percent sure, they should be able to take a wide variety of courses that allow them to eventually choose a major to specialize. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success”. In this respect, Dale Carnegie (2010) argues that one of the most important lessons from success is failure. It is interesting that Carnegie talks of failure being in everybody’s past, indicating that failure is not a process confined to the entrepreneur. The research undertaken for this paper has been concentrated on four different previous researches of Cope (2009), Ucbasaran et al. (2009, 2012) and Cardon et al. (2009). Attitudes toward failure are not homogeneous among entrepreneurs, however those who have experienced it are disputably more prepared for the battle of entrepreneurship. Learning from Communication Styles

Once educated on these styles of communication, and realizing how one’s self particularly prefers to communicate, can open many doors to better relationships and rolls, particularly as an employee and a manager. Through tests such as the Employee Tendency Indicator (ETI) and the Manager Tendency Indicator (MTI) I was personally able to identify what communication style I use in an employee and a manager roll inversely which communication styles I use the least. Taking these tests gave me the opportunity to see what communication styles I need to learn so I can better interact with individuals at work and in my personal life so I can have effective professional and personal relationships. My results were what I had expected after reading our textbook; I was an open communicator in both an employee and manager roll. I feel as though this fits my general personality and how I have communicated in both employee and manager positions in my business career (ETI, MTI test and also the book). I really respond best to open honest and through communication though it may sometimes be nerve-racking or painful. I would rather have everything out in the open than concealed. Assignments are given with deadlines and it is expected that the worker or student gets the job done effectively and on time. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics records that the average American spends more than half the day between work and spending time at home with children, however half of the day is wasted. The Bureau also outlines how lateness, stress and multitasking can have a negative effect on workplace productivity. If time is managed properly, one can achieve greater success. High among the list of those things that steal time from completing tasks is procrastination. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as the act or habit of delaying or putting off a task. A lot of time is spent thinking about what is to be done but this is not followed by any meaningful action.
