Business Ethics
Roger Charnock
BUSI 561

Most people are committed to doing the right thing; however that is not always the case in business. Since the days of a formal handshake to close a deal, the contract has evolved into a complex process. Many years ago society believed in the power of the spoken word; thus the statement my word is my bond, however since the downfall of mankind in the garden mistrust and out right egregious acts to undermine the boundaries of right and wrong has become more prevalent, especially in business. Christians conducting business in this present business model have to protect themselves from individuals who are self-seeking and unscrupulous. This paper will look at one example of contracts, while maintaining your spirituality.

“In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19 Amplified Bible). Since the days of Adam, society has tried to find an angle, something that will give them an advantage. While competition is good especially in the world of contracting, fair and reasonable is the oil that lubes the contracting wheel. Still this sense of right or wrong does not prevent poor contracts or unscrupulous dealings. The struggle for supremacy had its impetus with Cain and Abel. Jealousy and material gain will create irrational thoughts and entice someone to do wrong. The Bible states it best in this verse “If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it (Genesis 4:7 Amplified Bible). God has given us clear instructions in our dealings with others to do well; else we will have temptations that could overcome us. Cain was overcome with anger and the fear of…...

...DISCUSSION BOARD INSTRUCTIONS As part of the collaborative learning environment, you are required to interact with your classmates and course instructor in three Discussion Board forums. The interaction within this setting makes up a significant portion of your grade for this course. For each of the two graded forums, the instructor will provide you with a thought-provoking topic that will help start your online discussion.  Each forum is completed in two parts over the course of two weeks. In the first week of the forum, you will post a new thread that directly addresses the prompt provided by the instructor. In the subsequent week, you will post two meaningful replies to at least two classmates’ threads. Thus, for each forum you are required to post a minimum of 3 times: 1 thread and 2 replies. The instructor will observe online discussions throughout the assigned weeks and may interject his or her comments intermittently. Feel free to respond to the instructor's comments in addition to the required replies to your classmates' postings. Follow the guidelines provided below as you complete each part of the forums. THREAD: • Respond to the questions/ideas that are presented in the instructor’s prompt. • Summarize any related ideas that are presented in the Fee and Stuart textbook. For example, if the prompt asks you to identify issues that readers encounter, then you should summarize any reasons or examples that Fee and Stuart discuss in the......

...Unit 2 DB Subjective Probability “ A probability derived from an individual's personal judgment about whether a specific outcome is likely to occur. Subjective probabilities contain no formal calculations and only reflect the subject's opinions and past experience.” (investopedia.com, 2013) There are three elements of a probability which combine to equal a result. There is the experiment ,the sample space and the event (Editorial board, 2012). In this case the class is the experiment because the process of attempting it will result in a grade which could vary from an A to F. The different grades that can be achieved in the class are the sample space. The event or outcome is the grade that will be received at the end of the experiment. I would like to achieve an “A” in this class but due to my lack of experience in statistical analysis, my hesitation towards advanced mathematics, and the length of time it takes for me to complete my course work a C in this class may be my best result. I have a 1/9 chance or probability to receive an “A” in the data range presented to me which is (A,A-,B,B-,C,C-,D,D- AND F). By the grades that have been posted I would say that the other students have a much better chance of receiving a better grade than mine. I have personally use subjective probability in my security guard business in bidding on contracts based on the clients involved , the rates that I charge versus the rates other companies charge and the amount of work......

...Top of Form   Discussion Board 1 Chapter 1: Why is shared information so important in a learning organization in comparison to an efficient performance organization? Discuss how an organization’s approach to sharing information may be related to other elements of organization design such as: structure, tasks, strategy, and culture.       “Learning Organization” is a name used for the process of using a strategy in a company to build training to improve and create a more effective company. Using this approach will require the company’s commitment and use of the Total Strategic Approach. Using the Total Strategic Approach, the following areas will be covered: performance assessment and appraisal, problem solving and acknowledgement, openness, honesty and trust, access to high quality, readily available information, inter-group activities and cross-fertilization of ideas, with organization assessment and evaluation of the development process” (Pettinger, 2002). The approach needs to be understood and created by the top management to be beneficial and effective.       “Performance Organization” is the focus on the performance and outcome of the company in three areas: financial performance, product performance and shareholders return. Rather than focus on the learning elements the company is based on the performance. (Citoni, Mahy, & Rycx, 2012)       In the “Learning Organization” structure, sharing information and communication is vitally important and...

...Discussion Board Forum 1 Adrian R. Castaneda Liberty University BUSI 620 Global Economic Environment Dr. Virgil Mensah-Dartey October 24, 2013 DB FORUM 1 Question 3 Unethical behavior and unlawful behavior are different in a sense that unethical behavior violates integrity, while unlawful behavior violates established laws. When discussing unethical behavior in the business context, one should consider the overall focus of a business; maximize profits for shareholders and owners. The way a business operates to make money can be treated as ethical or unethical. An unethical type of practice in the business world can consist of a business that is determined to make a profit without considering the morale and comfort of their employees (Svensson & Wood, 2008). By failing to have happy employees in your business and over working them to make a profit can cause an ethical dilemma as the employee can see this type of business operation as a way of prioritizing profit over the employee morale. According to Thomas, Schermerhorn & Dienhart (2004) unlawful behavior is actions that breaks established laws or rules that control business practices. This type of behavior can be easier detected over unethical behavior because by violating unlawful behavior, the individual or individuals are violating written laws. For example, giving away insider trading information on a new medicine is a type of unlawful behavior in the business context. Businesses have written......

...BUSI600: Forum 2 Group 2 – Johnson, Joyner, Kramer, Lyons, Moore Liberty University Dr. Johnathan Schultz January 26, 2014 Forum 2 Question 19.3 The role of president in an organization is very time consuming and requires a broad knowledge base. The president must be informed to make decisions on various issues, such as: financial, investment, operational, marketing, and strategic. A study of the company’s pension plan compared to other firms in the industry should be in a management report form. Management reports are best when the reader has little time to absorb details and needs prompt exposure to critical findings (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). The order of the management report allows clients to grasp conclusions and recommendations quickly, without much reading, or with efficient use of time in this case (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). It may be helpful to have a technical report available for further information at the president’s request, but a management report should be presented first. It is likely that the President would rely on a Chief Financial Officer to further evaluate the report, or maybe even an actuary if the pension plan analysis involves heavy calculations and projections. A technical report format should be used to describe a marketing experiment for submission to the Journal of Marketing Research. A technical report is “the report that other researchers will want to see because it has the full story of what was done and how it was...

...Discussion Board 1/Week 1 Business Ethics To imply the ethical and spiritual perspective and keenly advise Benji Watson on accepting or refusing the contract offered by New Gen Health Sciences, it is imperative to define the parameters of Christian spirituality and ethics. As Christian, we are guided by many Commandments and teachings and examples set by many prophets, noble men, and many parables from Jesus, where upholding higher moral and ethical standard for the good of others, not self, was dear to him. In Luke 10: 29-37, Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan, a traveler from Jerusalem attacked and mocked by bandits. Two individuals, presented with the similar fate, were the least expected person to turn away and ignored the wounded person, by walking away and leaving the man stranded. Another important aspect to draw from the Christian spirituality mindset to advise Benji Watson, comes from Matthew 7: 12, commonly known as the Golden Rule. In this text, it is written that you do unto others as you would expect them to do unto you. Using the ethical perspective to advise Benji Watson, understanding of ethics, particularly business ethics, must be brought to bear. Ethics, in simplification is the study of good and bad behavior; whereas business ethics, a detachment of ethics, is what makes up good and bad behavior as related to business activities and values. From the definition of business ethics, we are left to decide what constitute the ambiguous terms...

...Discussion Board Unit 2 Comp101/1401B Introduction to Computers A. Questions for weekly discussions and conversations. 1. Why are clip art libraries useful, not only in Word , but also in PowerPoint? Clip art libraries are useful to show pictures to your words. They are great for making your documents or slide shows more exciting. Clip art actually can draw attention to get the readers to focus on the project or document itself. 2. What are the copyright laws that must be followed when using clip art? The right of legal use of clip art depends on the intent of the copyright owner. Copyrighted clip art is off limits for commercial use unless you have a written agreement with the copyright holder. For instance, if you sold Nike products in your store, you would have the right to use their logo for advertising. If you didn’t sell Nike products then it would be illegal for you to use their logo without permission. 3. When might it not be appropriate to use clip art? Clip art probably wouldn’t be appropriate in legal and professional documents. It wouldn’t be professional if clip art was used. B. If you have not used clip art before, find 2 sites on the internet, and provide at least 1 example of when each site could be used in a practical way. Include the type of clip art found at the sites, including categories or special interest areas for the site. The first site that caught my eye was ClipartHeaven.com. The clip art ranges......

Discussion Board Question 2

...According to your textbook, what are the dates for Jesus’ birth and death? Jesus’ birth is one of the most remarkable and glorious activities to ever take place on earth. There has always been speculation surrounding the exact birth date of our Lord and Savior. December 25th has been assigned and universally recognized as the birth of Christ. According to the text, although no definitive concensus was met to explicitly state when Jesus was born, it is a toss-up between Matthew’s account of Jesus birth and Luke’s account. Based on Matthew 2:1, “Now after Jesus was born in Bethleham of Judea in the days of Herod the King, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem…” in juxtaposition Luke 1:5 has nothing to do with Jesus’ birth, but rather John the Baptist’s. [1] What are the critical datum we use to attain these dates? Moreover, the text settles on the notion that Jesus birth was possibly around 4 BC. More specifically the text states, “Both the Western Church (December 25) and the Eastern Church (January 6) celebrate the birth of Jesus in the winter. None of the NT data is inconsistent with a mid-winter date. If the traditional dates approximate the actual date of Jesus’ birth, Jesus was probably born in the winter of either 7-6 BC, 6-5 BC, or 5-4 BC, with a 5 BC date for Jesus’ birth being perhaps the most likely” (Kostenberger, The Cradle, The Cross, and the Crown, 139). Similar to the contestation over Jesus’ birth; his death is no option. According to the......

...Discussion Board Forum 2 Thread BUSI 330 Amazon believes in keeping its marketing plan simple in order to be effective. Consequently, their marketing plan is based upon the 4 P’s (product, price, place, and promotion). Amazon’s product is to provide an unparalleled selection of any item that exists on the planet. Its prices are extremely competitive and often lower than traditional stores and it is more convenient for people to shop on the internet (place) than it is in a physical location. Finally, its promotion emphasizes big ideas, innovation, technology, and customer centricity, enabling it to market itself as the most convenient place for consumers to shop and satisfy their needs (Kerin & Hartley, 2015). This strategy targets Generational Y cohorts and the millennials who will respond to technology-driven promotions. The primary advantage that Amazon has over brick and mortar department stores is the depth of their selection and inventory. Amazon is able to list more goods than a department store would ever be able to store in its building. Consequently, consumers are almost absolutely sure that they will find what they are looking for when they shop at Amazon while they are not sure that their local department store will carry those items. Another advantage that Amazon holds over brick and mortar department stores is the convenience of the shopping process. Customers can research alternatives online far quicker than they could at a physical store. Furthermore,...

...Business Ethics After reading the case study involving Ms. Alexander and her opportunity with Next Step, I would advise Ramona to pray, even fast, about accepting the position. Hopefully she was already prayed up before she went to the ‘Meet and Great’ at Next Steps Headquarters (HQ). As Christians, we must ‘…be wise as serpents, but gentle as dove’s…' (Matthew 10:16, ESV), and one way we get wisdom is to be in constant communication with our one heavenly Father, whom is all knowing. Before leaving, she read up on Next Step. When Ms. Alexander arrived at Next Step’s HQ, she was showered with all sorts of gifts and treated to lunch by the Corporate Recruiter who told her of the circumstances that makes it possible for advancement and the money she could be earning with those advancements. Within Ms. Alexander’s research of the company, she found a mix of different opinions, regarding Next Step. One article, and interview with the CEO, has the CEO talking about how he wants to create a healthier America, making it seem that he truly loves and cares for the people. But, when Ms. Alexander was present at the companies pep rally at Next Step’s HQ, he seemed to be disrespectful and scornfully abusive to his clientele, calling them ‘fat, lazy, lethargic Americans’ who needs to be saved. Turning the spectacle into a religious one. The CEO also talked about being an industry leader in the ethics code in his interview. Ms. Alexander mention that to the corporate......

Busi 301 Case Study

...Case Study BUSI 301 LUO April 18th, 2016 Megan Wickham Part one: After reading all the details in the Landmark Case 13.4 Diaz v. Pan Am World Airways, Inc. I would have to agree with the court. Mr. Diaz was denied a flight attendant job with the airline because he is a male and that goes against the airline’s policy which states only a female may be a flight attendant. As the case goes to says, Mr. Diaz then filed a complaint with EEOC. His complaint was simply that the airline’s policy was a direct violation of Title VII; discriminating against him based on his gender. From an ethical standpoint and biblical standpoint this is just wrong. The Bible says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28 NKJV). Pan Am had then argued that gender was a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) for flight attendant positions. Pan Am also argued that passengers preferred women as flight attendants and customer preference in this case should also be considered” (Melvin & Katz, 2015, p. 386). The airline used such information as a nondiscriminatory reason for not hiring Mr. Diaz and as a way to provide, in their opinion, a legally recognizable defense. The airline continued to base and defend their decision of not hiring a male flight attendant as a result of employment policy as business necessity. Although the trail court found in favor for Pan Am, the......

...Discussion Board Forum Liberty University BUSI 642 Employment Cycle Taking on the responsibility of hiring a new worker is one of the many functions within the human resources field. I would approach hiring a new worker for my unit by following the establishment phase of the employment cycle. Based upon text published by Wiley and Sons, the establishment phase of the employment cycle consists of “identifying staffing needs, job analysis, recruitment, selection, employment arrangements and remuneration”. Considering that I have been given the task for conducting the recruitment and selection process; I would begin by determining what the company’s staffing needs are. Forecasting Labor Supply and Demand. Gomez-Mejia et.al (2016) discusses the human resources labor supply and demand. Labor supply is defined as “the availability of workers with the required skills to meet the firm’s labor demand. In other words the labor supply consists of the employees that already work for the company who have the capability to perform the job as outlined in the job description. Labor demand is defined as the amount of workers the company will need in the future to meet the needs of the company (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2016, p. 155) .According to Lunenburg ( 2012) the planning function of the human resource management process consist of “defining an organization’s goals, establishing a strategy for achieving those goals, and developing a comprehensive set of plans to......
