Doing Nothing Is Something One of the key points would be summer time is coming soon which means leaving textbooks and broken pencils behind. The Second key point is having downtime which includes looking into the middle distance, kicking at the curb, lying on the grass, or sitting on the stoop and staring at the tedious blue of the summer sky. Another key point is parents have arranged to schedule time and unscheduled times. Also, the key point is a Friday Night which means no homework, no athletic practices, and no after school events. The final key point is a culture of adult distrust which suggests that a kid who is not playing softball or attending science enrichment programs or both is huffing or boosting cars. What the writer intended for the reader to take away from this reading is that summertime is not time for having an overly busy schedule. Secondly, that having downtime is also good because then you could write poetry, compose music or become an actor. Having an arranged schedule means you do not have the free time you need to get other stuff done. Having a Friday night to spend time with friends and family and play games or watch movies is good as well and then you will have less stress about work or school. Having a culture of distrust from parents can cause the children to rebel against the adults and family.
I do a connection and disconnection to this essay because I am not a busy student but I do have a busy social life. Also, I keep myself with busy with all my college homework and the class projects. Another thing is that I also spend time with family and friends or shopping for new stuff. I also workout and clean up the house whenever I have free time. The disconnection that I have is that I plan my own schedule. Also, my parents have trust in me and that I can make my own choices and decisions about what I do in my life.

...-One Walking into school after months of not showing up was like walking into a nightmare. I forgot the smell and the peeling paint and the tiled floor. I forgot how the people talk and walk and stare. But being here again, it comes back in huge explosive waves. I feel sick. All I’ve been feeling lately is sick. I search for my locker. All the numbers are wrong, jumbled and unreadable. Asking would mean something is clearly wrong. I hold onto all my books, my backpack pressing hard on my shoulders. The bell rings and it is louder than I remember. I clench my teeth. The sounds resembles nails on a chalkboard, at least to me it does. Every day for two months I went to history class at this time in Mrs. Waters’ room. And now, I have no idea where it is. “Edith,” a girl’s voice says. I turn. “Yeah,” I say to Clara. Clara is the sweetest person on the planet. For the longest time I thought she was super fake because how can someone be that nice all the time. But she just is. “You have Waters still, right?” “Yeah,” I say. She loops her arm around mine. “I’m glad they didn’t change it.” “Me too,” but I don’t really care. Pulling me around corners and through different hallways we end up in history class. The room looks familiar, but a faraway familiar. Like a dream or déjà vu. She sits in the front row right next to the teacher’s desk. I escape to the back, the corner, right next to the window. Clara looks around and then moves to the seat in front of me. “I get it,”......

...up for themselves, express their opinions or needs in a respectful yet firm manner, and listen when they are being spoken to. Becoming more assertive is one of the most desired communication skills and helpful defense mechanisms most people want to learn, and would benefit in doing so. EXAMPLES of ASSERTIVENESS 1. As we have already stated, respect both yourself and the other person (or people) involved. It all starts here. This is the foundation. Respect of everyone is necessary. 2. Always begin with a disarming statement. Begin with any of the following statements. You may find a few others along the way, but these will always work. Choose any one of these depending on the situation and your personal preference. In some instances, you may use more than one, but usually one will suffice: * Compliment the other person. The compliment must be sincere. Saying “Thank you.” is considered a compliment, but of course is not the only way. Something like, “You really mean a lot to me” or “Thank you for your advice or “Thank you for your opinion” would be some examples of this. * Apologize. Apologize for any part of anything you may have done wrong or apologize that the person took offense to something you have done. Some examples would be “I’m sorry” or “I’m sorry. I really messed up this time” or “I’m really sorry you took offense at what I said (or did).” If you did wrong admit it. If not, you can still apologize without saying you did anything wrong (as in the last......

...Nothing – A mere seven characters long word but with such significance in our lives, which cannot be ignored. It has such diverse number of uses in our lives which we cannot even imagine. Everything, from us to the whole universe, started with this one word. It is the beginning of everything. As we can say, the step zero of all the processes is always ‘Nothing’. If something is already there then it cannot re-originate. Nothing existed before the Big Bang happened, which led to the creation of the universe. Now as the universe is already there, it cannot be re-created without it first being destroyed which will again lead it back to the step zero. It is also the most widely used word by us nowadays. ‘Nothing’ is what we do most of the times. It just may be the profession of a huge number of people in the world. Some love doing it and some are forced to it because of certain circumstances. To speak of it, at some point of time or the other all of us want to just sit back, relax and do nothing. This is what ultimately everyone’s goal is, this is what we work hard for all our lives. We all study hard to make a good career so that we can earn a lot of money and then just sit back and enjoy without having to do anything, which means being happily retired. It can also be used to hide our feelings and thoughts from the others. When we don’t want to discuss or talk about anything, we simply sum it all up in just this one word and the topic ends. Another form in which this word...

...2013 If you say something is one in the eye for someone, it means that something is a big disappointment or a defeat for them - but you are pleased about their disappointment. Examples: I got the job! That's one in the eye for John – I've never liked him and I was sure he would get the position. Ha! Our winning the championship was one in the eye for our rival team – they are always boasting about their skills. * Get your skates on! 17 December 2013 If you tell someone to get your skates on it means that you want them to do something quickly or to hurry up. Examples: You'd better get your skates on, or we are going to miss the bus! Get your skates on! We've got a lot of work to do today. * To tower over 12 December 2013 To tower over someone or something means to be much taller than that person or thing. Examples: Joan towers over her husband when she wears her smart high heel shoes. The new skyscraper towers over the buildings downtown. * To branch out 10 December 2013 If someone is branching out it means they are starting to do something new or differently from the way they usually do. Examples: Jane has been working as a journalist since she left university but now she's branching out and writing a novel. The supermarket has branched out and started selling clothes as well as food. * Ask for the moon 5 December 2013 To ask for the moon means to make unreasonable demands for things, or to wish for something impossible to......

Turn Off Your Tv and Start Doing Something More Interesting

...gentlemen. My name is Elena Saravia Garza, and today I will talk to you about doing something more interesting than watching your TV. American teenagers spend more than seven hours each day using devices, when that should be the total time in a week. That means half their waking time. If you ask someone what are the most important things in their lifes, their family and friends would probably be near or at the top of the list, but instead of spending most of their free time with them, they spend it using gadgets. Spending a lot of time in devices can lead to serious consequences, like obesity, cancer, heart troubles, damaged eyesight, diabetes, sleep dificulties, decreased attention span, limited brain growth, autism along with others. Most people have fences and locks on their doors because they don’t want theifs to rob them, but the gadgets that rob our time, people welcome them into their homes and even would build a special room for them. A recent study made by sociologists of Maryland University cuncludes that unhappy people spend more time watching TV, while people who consider themselves happy dedicate more time to read and socialize. Life is meant to be lived, not to be watched. To get you started living your life rather than watching others live theirs, you should consider this tips: * Balance your time * Give yourself limitations * Spend your free time doing something interesting and useful * Every time you want to watch T.V or use......

...cases, but they can happen. What happens in between the extremes is a lot of short-term fluctuations, which can frequently last several days, sometimes several weeks, and even several months. We will talk more about these fluctuations in the "Bankroll Management" chapter. It is important to realize that there are subtle differences between a good poker player and a bad one that take effect over time. The beauty of poker is that the bad players always remember the limes they had some good short-term luck, so they keep coming back for more until they eventually go broke. However, understanding how to play good poker is not enough to win the money. You must APPLY this knowledge at all times. Poker is a fun and exhilarating game, but there is nothing more frustrating than outplaying an opponent only to lose money to him, MANY players begin to play badly when things do not go their way. This is commonly referred to as tilt. However, I don't think tilt fully explains the range of emotions. Of course, the first step is preventing yourself from going on tilt, but there is a big difference between playing your "A" game and going on tilt. Many players may not go on full tilt, but they begin to play just a few more hands or make a few more calls than they should. This often happens late at night when a player is trying to get back to even before going to bed. Good players realize that they can always get hack to even the next day. I expect that the difference between the expert players......

Something Something

... “As a woman in this day & age, I am in a position to ask a man what can you do for me that I can’t do for myself? I pay my own bills. I take care of my household without the help of any man…or woman for that matter. I am in the position to ask, ‘What can you bring to the table?’” The man looked at her. Clearly he thought that she was referring to money. She quickly corrected his thought & stated, “I am not referring to money. I need something more. I need a man who is striving for excellence in every aspect of life.” He sat back in his chair, folded his arms, & asked her to explain. She said, “I need someone who is striving for excellence mentally because I need conversation & mental stimulation. I don’t need a simple-minded man. I need someone who is striving for excellence spiritually because I don’t need to be unequally yoked…believers mixed with unbelievers is a recipe for disaster. ...

...more commonly used as a way of describing employees or positions (Iles, 2010). From this we can see issues of identity affirmation and the associated status and power that are ascribed to those allegedly bearing ‘talent’. In the wider public domain, the term ‘the talent’ is commonly used when referring to, for example, entertainment celebrities. Here ‘talent’ refers to those individuals who make a living from an ability to perform on stage or screen. In this context the intention is to encourage a search for ‘undiscovered talent’ and, in attempts to do so, the quest often unearths ‘raw talent.’ However, what constitutes talent is very much about perspective and is driven as much by personal preferences of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ as by something clearly definable. For instance, a popular television show cites successful individuals as having the ‘X-Factor’ with the ‘X’ referring to an indescribable quality that constitutes or denotes a special talent. The end result is that the winners of the show, that is the ‘talent’ who, by winning are believed to have the X-Factor, aren’t necessarily guaranteed a successful or sustainable career. This is because they might not after all possess the indefinable, unexplainable and unidentifiable X that will make them successful outside of the talent show. The type of talent that is associated most often with this type of entertainment show, and also with celebrated artistic and sporting ability, is often believed to be a......

...humans have grown up with a ridiculous impression that we must know our environment before branching out to others, when in reality, doing both at the same time is a classic opportunity that we seem to be taking for granted. First Priority, Second Priority First of all, the goal here is to create a kind of balance, we are not attempting to give up one option for the other. I understand that it hurts to see a lot of these people going on and on about “saving the starving, the needy and the impoverished”. I absolutely agree with that, HOWEVER, how many tons of rice and grain do we have to keep dropping on these countries before they get their act together and feed themselves? I know it sounds heartless as I’m saying it, but think about it closely, isn’t it their fault? I honestly do not care if they don’t have money. Humans have lived for thousands of years off of the land and many animals still manage to pull this off, it’s ridiculous! Why do we have to send a bunch of religious Christian missionaries over to dig them a well? Why can’t they dig their own well? Why can’t they move out of the areas, which are consumed with nothing but drought? Are you just feeling guilty because you are living a better life? If there’s one thing that I have learned, is that you just can’t help people that will not bother to help themselves. And trust me, something, maybe not soon enough, but someday we will all run out of food and starve to death because we were all foolish enough to move on......

How Something Can Come from “Nothing” that something can come from nothing. A god of the gaps is probably the most common, as well as most elementary, argument for debating science vs. religion. This idea is simply employing a divine meaning to things that science has no answer to. It is often a question of why, and assumes purpose to everything. One thing that science cannot refute is a purpose to our world. It is scientifically inert, that is to say that there is no plausible way to test its predictions. The scientific method is just field testing the observable world we see around us. We are all naturally inquisitive; we thrive to find our “purpose” in the world. But this, I believe, is simply a limit to our senses. When there are questions that science cannot answer, such as why we came to be, skeptics often say that it is outside the bounds of our universe. This, to me, is just a lazy answer. The god of the gaps is a “fill in the blank” answer to everything that has been so far, untestable. This does not mean that anybody has the right to invoke a spiritual meaning, or a majestic god to explain things. This explanation opens far more doors of unanswerable questions that frankly, are irrational to believe in. How, by definition, means in what manner, or by what means (“how”, 2016). Why is defined as; for what reason, cause, or purpose (“why”, 2016). These are two very distinct meanings; again one invokes a purpose, where the other is simply asking how something......

...functions within designated zones, it has done so by agreement, through the Oslo Accords and related understandings, keeping for itself “powers and responsibilities not so transferred”.166 When Israel unilaterally evacuated troops and settlements from the Gaza Strip, it left in place a Palestinian local administration. There is no local governing body to which full authority has been transferred. In this regard, the Mission recalls that the International Court of Justice, in its Advisory Opinion on the Legal Consequences of the Construction of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, regards the transfer of powers and responsibilities by Israel under various agreements with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as having “done nothing” to alter the character of Israel as an occupying Power.167 280. Although the essential elements of occupation are present in the Gaza Strip, account must be taken of the fact that inside Gaza there is a de facto local administration, which carries out the functions and responsibilities in various areas transferred to the Palestine Authority under the Oslo Accords, to the extent that it is able to do so in the light of the closures and blockade imposed by Israel. 281. The developments that have taken place in the past two decades, in particular through the jurisprudence of international tribunals, have led to the conclusion that the substantive rules applicable to either international or non-international armed conflicts are......

...and integrity to be very important in a company, more than half have at some point in their careers been asked to do something they considered to be somewhat challenging to their own set of personal values. For 98% of respondents, working for a company that has top ethics and integrity is important – ‘very important’ to 92.3%. Roughly three quarters (74.2%) consider the company they work for to have a high level of ethics and integrity, to ‘a large extent’ for 45.8% of respondents. Six in 10 state that their company has a written code of ethics, which 67.8% claim is fleshed out and well-communicated in a transparent manner. Ethics training is required at 68% of respondents’ companies, with 78.8% claiming that ethical criteria are included in the employee appraisal system. On the other hand, 17.2% say that their company is not at all transparent about its values, with a further 15% stating that the level of transparency is low. Top managers set a good example of ethical conduct, according to 68% of respondents, though only 47.7% consider, to a large extent, that their direct manager is someone with a high level of ethics and integrity. A quarter (23.3%) state that their direct manager may not be someone they see as having a high level of ethics and integrity. This is perhaps reflected in the fact that 54.6% of respondents have been asked to do something at work at some point in their careers that has clashed with their personal values. For 18.4% of those......

Nothing but Doing Something

...1. Surah Al Fatihah (The Opening) Name This Surah is named Al-Fatihah because of its subject-matter. Fatihah is that which opens a subject or a book or any other thing. In other words, Al-Fatihah is a sort of preface. Period of Revelation It is one of the very earliest Revelations to the Holy Prophet. As a matter of fact, we learn from authentic Traditions that it was the first complete Surah which was revealed to Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him). Before this, only a few miscellaneous verses were revealed which form parts of `Alaq, Muzzammil, Muddaththir, etc. Theme This Surah is in fact a prayer which Allah has taught to all those who want to make a study of His book. It has been placed at the very beginning of the book to teach this lesson to the reader: if you sincerely want to benefit from the Quran, you should offer this prayer to the Lord of the Universe. This preface is meant to create a strong desire in the heart of the reader to seek guidance from the Lord of the Universe, Who alone can grant it. Thus Al-Fatihah indirectly teaches that the best thing for a man is to pray for guidance to the straight path, to study the Quran with the mental attitude of a seeker- after-truth and to recognize the fact that the Lord of the Universe is the source of all knowledge. He should, therefore, begin the study of the Quran with a prayer to him for guidance. From this theme, it becomes clear that the real relation between Al-Fatihah and the Quran is not that...
