Challenging behavior derives from several of reasons. Gathering information to understand the behavior of children helps guide the child with appropriate behavior. Proper guidance can capture a solution to resolve the challenging behavior. I have been gathering information on different ways to diagnose and find solutions through different methods, which I intend to share.
They are two strategies developed by behavioral psychologist to understand a child’s challenging behavior (FBA) Functional Behavior Assessment and (PBS) Positive Behavioral Support. These two strategies are to discover what is triggering the behavior, where the child is receiving the behavior from, and find a solution to replace the negative behavior with a more positive behavior. Collecting data to figure out the problems would be discussed and reviewed with the support team. When you do this you can collaborate to find the cause of the behavior challenges and find out perspectives of why they believe the child behaves this way, and what could be done as a teacher to help the child’s goal towards better behavior. Identifying the behavioral problem, figuring out a solution, finding the functions of the problem. Asking question about the environment that the child grew up in and currently living in. Once you have found all the problems needed to be found, you then would have to create a behavior support plan. Teachers using the assessment tool called A-B-C, it helps to separate the main areas needed to solve the problem so you can observe the details a little better. In the most classic definition, positive reinforcement is a method of identifying to children which behaviors are acceptable and appropriate and which are not (Sigler, E. & Aamidor, S, 2005). Reinforcement is often given as praise for doing a certain task. As educators, saying “great job” or a simple word like “fantastic” are expressed towards students as praise. However, when a student is struggling and praise is given such as “you are doing so well”, the negative aspects of praise present themselves. The child is aware of the empty praise therefore it may work against the teacher if it is taken as a false praise. So, as educators, we must determine what reinforcements will work with each individual child through experimentation. Also, building a relationship with not just the child, but the parents and all those involved with the child will be instrumental in developing the proper use of reinforcements and can be helpful in gaining knowledge of certain behaviors. The stronger reinforcements for most children are usually food, candy, or drinks. The durability and effectiveness of a reinforcer can usually be determined best by reinforcing the behavior intermittently or by providing a strong alternative which could interfere with the behavior in question (Ferster, C, 1961). Reinforcements are usually considered negative in nature and often viewed as coercive. Punishment, a widely known and accepted form of alternative behavior, is a quick fix for problem behaviors. It is often used as it is more familiar and is a fast solution for the situation and the teacher. Persons who use different forms of punishment remark that it terminates undesirable and negative behaviors quickly and is easily given. While punishment has proven effective for some students, it is not always the desired behavior intervention for all students. Punishment is not always the best solution for undesirable and negative behaviors. Students with chronic behaviors, for example, do not respond well to punishment (Koch, 2012). Students are repeatedly punished by their parents and guardians through verbal assaults, spankings/beatings, the use of time out, and other negative methods. Students are accustomed and sometimes immune to receiving punishment that one needs to consider if the punishment is really effective? Also to consider is the reason for the punishment to inflict harm or merely to correct or terminate negative behavior? ...Behavioral Support Plans Behavior management is essential in early childhood settings. It is part of avoiding problems that some children may bring to the classroom. Examples of behaviors consist of hitting, biting, kicking, or throwing things. Behaviors such as these can also be called challenging behaviors. This type of behavior can happen for numerous reasons, which is why teachers need to make a plan to help control or even stop these types of behaviors. Having behavior management skills that are useful are used in classrooms will reduce any disruptions and help all of the children learn. Being a proactive thinker lets you think your own way. It is not allowing others to tell you what to do or how to think. As difficult as it may be to be a proactive thinker, especially while working with children, it is still very important. You may need to try different strategies before you find the one that works. Not everything will be fixed right away. Strategies that may help teachers determine while children are displaying challenging behaviors include: predictability and scheduling, add more choices, and make adjustments to the curriculum. There are many different variations from many different publications that attempt to define discipline and management, as well as behavior and misbehavior and many experts have discussed how each should be defined and compared. There have been many books published on the subject of classroom discipline (Butchart, 1995). Charles suggests in the text, Building Classroom Discipline, many different strategies that can be used in the classroom regarding discipline (Charles, 2011). The dictionary Merriam-Webster defines discipline as punishment or control gained by enforcing obedience or order. Many different experts weigh in on how classroom discipline factors in with classroom management. Classroom management and discipline seem to work together in each being a key component of each other. According to the text, a teacher must find a system of discipline that works for their classroom. The text also suggests that discipline has 3 goals, productive learning environments are established, students become more responsible, and it promotes overall civility of the total class (Charles, 2011). And that discipline approach should be organized to fit your students needs for your particular classroom.
