Take home essay #1
A Very Heavy Future.
Childhood obesity is a reality in the US. Since parents do not have enough time to go home and make some food, instead they choose to go the quickest way, they would choose any kind of rapid food restaurant. But what we are not realizing are the major causes of this terrible disease called obesity. Many outcomes, which are all negative, make this “disease” so terrible, some of them are diet, medical conditions, and lack of physical activity.
Obesity makes a big and negative impact in the diet of children. Kids these days consume more calories than the recommended from their doctors. Due to the lack of time of parents and the stress accumulated, they forget that fast food, soda, candy, snacks, sweets, and baked foods contribute to the gain of weight to their kids. And because they eat these kind of meals every single day, children get used to it and will not want to eat healthy meals. Everything contributes to very serious medical conditions.
Childhood obesity is a mayor disease common among the children in the US. It all starts when the kid reaches and surpasses their normal weight point based on his/her age and height. Kids with extra pounds on their bodies have a higher risk of having other deadly diseases when becoming adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. Childhood obesity also leads to poor self-esteem and depression. At this point most kids have a high lack of physical activity.
The consumption of junk food is not the only thing that makes up obesity, it is also the lack of physical activity. At the point where the kid has a high weight the lack of physical movement will also increase. Some factors like television, computers, and video games makes the situation even worse by keeping kids inside and more sedentary, which means they are burning fewer…...

...Maya Rivas ENC1101 Maya Rivas BBonincontri ENC1101 09/14/12 Compare and Contrast Final Draft #1 Classic Basic buttons, basic screen, no color and no texting, does not sound so appealing right? Back in the 90’s cell phones were so simple and easy. In this century, IPhones, Androids and other touch screen phones are just too difficult to even understand for certain individuals. Old phones are precisely how my life style right now is, simple and easy. I enjoy getting straight to the point with no time being wasted when it comes down to doing any sort of activity, as if I myself were an old phone. Majority of the population have a better understanding when it comes to old phones rather than the new phones we have here today. Old phones consists basic contents which makes it more comprehensible to everyone including the elders. Since there were no texting back in the 90’s cell phones would only be used for simply making and receiving calls. With old phones, no one had to worry about their screens not working anymore or any other difficulties that came along with having a touch screen phone. Even the games were simple (Tetris and snake), you would also never hear anyone complain about how their screen cracks easily or how their phone broke. Old phones were never filled with unnecessary things so the phones would work perfectly fine with very little objections. New phones would be slow sometimes even just to turn on because of all......

...Gabriela Valdes Prof. Camila Alvarez ENC1101 MW 8:00-9:15am 11 January 2011 781 Words Essay #1 Rough Draft/ Descriptive: The Day I Left My Native Country Changed My Whole Life Life is about making choices, but at the age of seven I had no right to make my own choices. I was seven years old when my parents told me they had decided to leave our homeland Havana, Cuba I was speechless and pale like a printing paper. They wanted a better future for me; for they knew in America I would have a better education and a more comfortable lifestyle. In Cuba education and lifestyle was very poor, not everything was modern like in America. However, going to America was not what bother me it was leaving the life I had in my homeland. That significant decision my parents made changed everything about me and my life, it meant I had to leave my homeland, friends and family to go to a far-away place, I would have adjust to the alien environment, and I would have to learn a different language. I remember the day I had to leave Cuba; I was just seven years old. My parents drove to the airport with my entire friends and family to say our last goodbyes. As I walked into the airport everything was really bright, and cold inside, yet my face looked boiling hot; it did not mean I was hot I was just trying to hold in my tears from how badly I wanted to cry. My time was done as I heard a computer voice say the flight was ready to take off. I gave my grandma her last hug squeezing her fragile......

Reality Tv

...Troy McCall N. Bullard ENC1101 Do people really benefit from reality shows? I. Sample shows Jersey shore and Real House Wives. A. Reality shows have a demoralizing effect. B. Portrays too many negative people on TV as role models II. Sample show 16 and pregnant. A. The attitudes of the teens on these shows. B. How does this affect today’s teens. Do people benefit from reality television shows? I think that reality shows are not good for people to watch all the time because of all the negative aspects of the shows they have on, such as The Real Housewives, Sixteen and Pregnant and Jersey Shore. Television shows have given way to reality shows. Are reality TV shows, reality or are they scripted? Jersey shore is a reality show about a group of eight individuals that move in together in a summer share. The show did advertisements in the begging that sparked controversy by Italian American’s when they used the term Guido. The show also portrays a negative side of things. The cast members in my opinion were snobbish and superficial. To teens they might think it’s the in thing to tan your body or wear promiscuous clothing out to party’s. Reality shows also promote drinking and smoking. Often people watch reality shows to see how other people live, but most reality shows are nothing but negative demoralizing shows that gives its viewers a false impression of how people should respond or converse with each other. There are three shows......

The Mastery

...Lewis Andrew Enc1101 Jenise Hudson Paper3 part 1 After reading the two stories and both including couples and their idea of a trophy wife and the conflicts I feel that the passage from successful women, angry men relates more to what goes on in reality. In “The new trophy wife”, they talk about how woman think men fear them if they are more successful than them. In all reality men appreciate a woman who can hold her own, yet I feel not all men find that to be a trophy wife. In the other passage they talked about a couple who went from almost never arguing to excessive arguing. They had made prior agreements to adjusting to each other’sbusy schedule around work and their new baby. Things didn’t go as planned and they began to argue because he felt she worked to much and they had no time alone. They had no bonding time to spend with eachother so it caused them to argue. A new trophy wife just broke down what they thought the new trophy wife of todays age was. There was many different couples used in the passage and they used some things that apply to few relationships. Although some of it was true it wasn’t about how a relationship really was in todays society. In the other passage they had argued about who was gonna clean the house and take care of the kids. Their relationship began to get worse and worse to to the arguing. You can see how the stress they both had to deal with had greatly affected what they had towards the beginning of their marriage....

Ucf Writing May Be Lacking One Key Aspect: Exigence

...UCF Writing May be Lacking One Key Aspect: Exigence In all the writing we do as students here at UCF, it may seem unusual to ask yourself “why am I writing this?” Any UCF student that has passed ENC1101 may be familiar with potentially the most important part of writing: exigence. Without exigence, students lack the essential part of writing that recognizes a purpose, a cause, and the intended effect a writer wants the audience to have. Exigence is the compelling force a person feels from an event or circumstance to urgently respond to and impact an audience. For example, MLK’s most famous speech “I Have a Dream” was given as a response to the inequality in the U.S. and spoken with the intent to create a society without prejudice. The exigence behind this famous piece is clear and evident. Without a writer keeping an exigence in mind, most works would become wasted words with no impact towards an audience. Compelled writing with intentions and goals is what makes a paper effective and impactful. Students around campus feel that when they write for a class, their only motive is to receive a good grade from their teacher. If that is the case, then they’re most likely writing about why they literally deserve an “A”. Real exigence puts a purpose in writing, for example, the factor that provoked us to write this article —our exigence— came from grading essays that lack an incentive. Instead of addressing assignments directly, UCF students need a real exigence that will......

Skype

...Amanda Mayer Dr. O’Brien Enc1101 V4 Janurary 28, 2014 Since the beginning of time, people have used their imagination to create thoughts of what the future might hold. For instance, television shows like the Jetson’s and Star Trek have introduced unthinkable scenarios such as video phone calls and hovercrafts to the American public. Even though we haven’t quite made it to flying cars, technology has made video chat and other amazing technological advances available to almost anybody! Skype has opened doors for people that have family members or friends that live far away or are overseas serving our country. Skype is even used to perform interviews! This particular photograph is an awesome advertisement that portrays something that was only seen in our wildest dreams during the early 1900’s. They used an old look to demonstrate our new reality. In comparison to other means of communication like emails, texts or regular phone calls, Skype gives people the opportunity to interact on a whole other level. Skype combines real time video technology with human speaking ability to provide users with an experience similar to an in-person conversation. It gives people the opportunity to have a REAL conversation by allowing one another to involve personality and show facial expressions. Skype allows for more social comfort and confidence when a serious conversation is needed. Many issues with communication occur because of misinterpreted or......

...VS Out Shoneyd By: Haleigh Keen ENC1101 Professor Alison Smith 27 February 2014 11:00am Out Shonyed McDonalds is one of the largest and best-known fast food restaurants in the world. Over the last thirty years, Mc Donald’s has been known as a leader in the fast food industry. Although there are a great number of fast food restaurants around the world, Mc Donald’s restaurant is famous for its burgers, fries, and service with a smile, but a new restaurant is making a name for itself, and their name is Shoney’s. My boyfriend and I go to Shoney’s often and we always enjoy the food and service. From the burgers all the way to the salads everything is fresh and smells great. As well as attending Shoney’s, we occasionally go through the drive thru of Mc Donald’s on a long trip or a “broke” day. When comparing Shoney and Mc Donald’s, you would be surprised to know that these restaurants are the same in many ways, but are different at the same time. Shoney gives you a feeling of being in an upscale restaurant with a family setting, with pictures on the wall, low playing music in the background; whereas in McDonald restaurant, there are golden arches painted on the wall for art, crazy light up tables, along with picture of a clown and no music playing in the restaurant...

Natural Capital

...ENC1101 Tuesday 5:40pm March 19, 2013 Natural Capital Our planet is quickly feeling the negative impact of our careless lifestyles. The question of the hour is, what is natural capital and how does it define one aspect of Miami Dade County? First of all, natural capital is water, trees, wetlands, oceans, coral reefs, and rain forests. As we have learned in our past readings, our nation’s natural capital is being destroyed by our reckless behavior. In Cutler Bay, Florida there is a park-marina known by the name of Black Point Park & Marina. Presently, the park is thriving, but if we continue to abuse our environment the future of this park can be at stake. Black Point Park & Marina is a clean park with many amenities and is a great place to take your boat out, or watch other people try. Coming to the marina on a Saturday night is better than going to a comedy club. There are large pickups with boat trailers, inexperienced boaters that after a long day of drinking at Elliot Key are oblivious to what they are doing, and a slippery boat ramp. Generally, one truck per weekend ends up needing to be towed or winched out of the water. It's so comical; it should be declared a national event. As for the harbor, it is home to several different animals such as, Manatees, Crocodiles, Alligators, Egrets, Herons, Eagles, Osprey, and Pelicans. It is exciting to see the manatees come up to the dock and drink fresh water from the water hose. While the marina, has a dockside......

Review

...Anabelle Denault ENC1101 Dissuasive Film We all have a crazy idea of Spring Break, which includes partying, having fun and meeting new people. The movie Spring Breakers written and directed by Harmony Korine was supposed to represent just that. They’re plenty of movies that portray college students’ spring break, so watching this movie starring four very well known actors Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, James Franco, and Ashley Benson, I expected much more. In most movies/shows, Selena, Ashley, and Vanessa depict the ‘good girl’ image, and they should stick to just that. Seeing young disney channel actresses act like druggies wasn’t appealing or entertaining at all. They are supposed uphold a certain reputation considering they are the women that young girls look up to. Even James Franco, a known ‘Stoner Actor’ was portrayed stupidly. He was supposed to be a “gangster” but looked more like a fool on some serious drugs. Being a part of this film was a horrible decision for all of these actors. Spring Breakers is the type of movie that wouldn’t have even hit theatres if it didn’t star widely known actors. The only reason I watched this movie is because of the actors in it. I believed it would be good considering I have watched a handful of movies that they acted in and they usually portray interesting characters. I also adore Selena Gomez, once I knew she was staring in it, I deemed it as a ‘must watch’ movie. Yet of course, another disappointment, Selena......

Success

...Zia Ficocelli Mr. Frank ENC1101 5/27/2015 Success is Happiness If the destination isn’t worth the road that is paved, then why walk the road? Success is about accomplishing things in life, and being happy through out all the adventures. While many people define success by the end result success is more about the journey, and being happy along that journey. No matter how the world turns it will never fall out of orbit. A goal can be small or big. Accomplishing a goal is a great thing; it is a part of being successful. Hard work is the key. The more effort put into a task, the more that will come out of completing the task. For instance, working out. More sweat, less weight. Success is happiness in accomplishments. Therefore you would be happy because of the pride you feel that comes with setting and reaching a goal. Finding happiness in a sense of fulfillment. While completing any goal though, it is important to be happy along the way. Completing long-term goals can absorb all energy inside and out. However, excitement and cheer is something to keep in hand throughout the adventure. Why would anyone spend years of their life trying to become something and hate themselves the whole time? At the end of the road, dissatisfaction and bad memories will be all the brain has to remind itself of why they’re there in the first place. It’s a waste of time to be unhappy. Following dreams cannot be that way. Remember to stay positive. Learn how to cope with the bad......

Gun Control

...A Persuasive Argument for a Change in Law: The right to own automatic or semi-automatic weapons. English Composition – ENC1101 These days there are many kinds of weapons available in the market. The second amendment gives people the right to use the weapon for their self-defense in homes. Does the gun really protect the life of a person? There are lots of home and public shooting happening in these days. The weapons can be misused by illegal users and mentally unstable individuals. This means that instead of protection, they endanger the life of people. So when considering the increased number of shooting, government should come up with a new law to ban weapons to prevent shootings in homes and in public places. People should have a safety feeling at home. But that safety feeling is not there when there is a gun at home. It can be misused by a younger person who is not familiar with the weapon. Children do not know how dangerous guns are and they may shoot at somebody accidentally. Teenagers can experiment on it and may end up doing lethal mistakes. Guns are widely being used these days during fight, to kill the enemies in an emotional outburst. For example, there was a case brought to North Broward Medical Centre where a man shot his ex-wife and her father. They called 911 and got help from police officers for their safety. They had to undergo major abdominal and chest surgeries and got hospitalized for many days. The shooter bought the gun legally and he had...

Deforestation Rough Draft

...Axel Soto Enc1101 November 4, 2015 Deforestation Walt Kelly once said “We have met the enemy and he is us”, while this quote can be used for a variety of things, in this instance it will be used to describe the concept of deforestation. According to Merriam Webster deforestation is the act or result of cutting down or burning all the trees in an area. There are many causes that can lead to deforestation for instance, agriculture expansion, logging operations, land abuse, and accidental wildfires. Even through there are a variety of factors that can lead to deforestation the end result is always the same, utter destruction. To begin with, the concept of deforesting is nothing new, the main differences between the present and the past lies in the causes. In the past deforesting was mainly used for agriculture, typically it was used in the slash and burn style. In the present deforesting for agriculture remains but in a much greater scale, according to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) about thirty-six football fields of trees are lost every minute due to deforestation. Agriculture plays a huge part in deforestation especially with the world population at an all-time high, in fact farmers are constantly expanding their land and cutting down trees to grow crops. Next, unlike agriculture logging expansions didn’t occur until most recently. Logging operations are the root cause of the world’s paper, if it weren’t for loggers there would be no paper/wooden products. Although their many......

Narrative

...Alexcia Harrington February 16th, 2016 ENC1101 Essay #1- Literacy Narrative "Education is the key" that’s all I heard for about thirteen years of my life. Being raised in a family where it was believed that an education came before anything was very difficult understand as a child. "I can't, should NEVER be in your vocabulary" was said religiously until finally I understood and even after that. I am grateful that all of this led me to a seat in a college classroom where some of my family and friends never encountered. It all began in elementary school, Henry E.S. Reeves. "Does your child know how to read and write?" That’s one of the questions the teachers asked my mom before we entered the class. I wasn’t one of the best, but I do believe that I was better than many others my age. Pre-K was the only schooling that I knew about, so elementary school was new to me. In Pre-K they taught us all the basics. I would agree that some of the best teachers worked there. They taught us so well there that by the time of graduation we were smart enough to write something's that our parent didn’t expect us to write. During kindergarten I tried my best to impress all the teachers and to get them to recommend me for gifted classes. After being there for about three years I was transferred to another school where we didn’t do as much we did reading and math. That really did affect me. A few years later I entered middle school. Middle school and high school were similar. This......

Slavery of the 1st Century

...Carolina Romero Ruby Moaney ENC1101-7209 26 Jan. 2016 Slavery of the 21st Century People see all kinds of ads on many different topics every day. It is characterized because it can be direct capturing the attention of the viewer; however, the human trafficking ad represents the issue and meets the goal because of the amount of people affected and the emotions that transmit. One of the most impacting things that the ad represents the issue is with the amount of numbers that it shows. For example, 70% of sexual exploitation in the world comes from Latin America, since one of the most common factors is the poverty that affects these countries. The ad shows how people with different ages have been sexually abused, deception, beaten, kidnapped, and how they prohibiting freedom and human rights as people. Another number that give great impact on the viewer is the amount of money that human trafficking would make just in one year. A lot of people thinks that it’s an organized crime fastest growing in the world, generates 7 billion of dollars each year. There are even reports that some groups of traffickers are moving from drug trafficking to people trafficking because they want more income with less risk. This ad reaches its goals through photos and words that accompany it. When an individual sees these kinds of topic and appears a little girl or a boy, people are more sensitized to the situation and these images are marked in their memory and return to remind them how far......

...Sandra Tamayo Prof. Elizabeth Lagaron ENC1101-876902 90s Romantic Films vs. Present Romantic Films With today’s growing industry of entertainment and technology, the concept of movies has increasingly changed, and this is especially true for romantic films, which in the last few years have become cultural product of consumption that calm the thirst of emotions and entertains audiences. We are been living in a decade where materialism, coldness, and convenience stands out compared to previous decades. A clear example of this are the romantic films of the 90s compared to the present romantic films. For example, when we look at the 1990 movie Pretty Woman, we can see that there is a gallant man, and the conquest and elegance prevails. However, when we look at the 2007 movie Good Luck Chuck, we can realize that there is nothing alike in this romantic film, or in this decade. It was only after comparing the courtly manners of the man, the intensity of the sensual scenes, and the song soundtracks of the two films, that it can be determined that there are several differences and similarities between the two romantic films. At first glance, comparing the 90s romantic films to the present romantic films, we can clearly appreciate that in the movie Pretty Woman, the character Edward (Richard Gere), demonstrates a high level of elegance and gentleman in how he treats Vivian (Julia Roberts), speaks to her, and how he expresses himself. In addition, how could anyone forget the......
