...Civil Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginnings of human existence. The earliest practices of Civil engineering may have commenced between 4000 and 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (Ancient Iraq) when humans started to abandon a nomadic existence, thus causing a need for the construction of shelter. During this time, transportation became increasingly important leading to the development of the wheel and sailing. Until modern times there was no clear distinction between civil engineering and architecture, and the term engineer and architect were mainly geographical variations referring to the same person, often used interchangeably. The construction of Pyramids in Egypt (circa 2700-2500 BC) might be considered the first instances of large structure constructions. In the 18th century, the term civil engineering was coined to incorporate all things civilian as opposed to military engineering. The first engineering school, The National School of Bridges and Highways, France, was opened in 1747. The first self-proclaimed civil engineer was John Smeaton who constructed the Eddystone Lighthouse. In 1771, Smeaton and some of his colleagues formed the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers, a group of leaders of the profession who met informally over dinner. Though there was evidence of some technical meetings, it was little more than a social society. In 1818, world’s first engineering society, the Institution of Civil Engineers was founded in London, and......

Engineering Economics

...higher value (10.3%) compared to other industries, which indicates that the demand of this industry is pretty high and the economic crisis didn’t affect the overall customer purchase. Based on this analysis, the electric utility is the best choice, which needs a highest cost for the equipment and property set-up but the electricity is still an indispensable product and demands for it is hardly to be shrunk even during the economic crisis year. From column B, the percentage of receivables is 3.8% and the days of inventory is 4, which are the lowest values among other industries. These two numbers indicate that customers have strong purchase power to buy products quickly and this industry requires customers to pay the money as soon as possible as they purchase the product. Usually, the discounted product will attract more customers because they are affordable, which indicates the discount general merchandise retailer. The industry in column C has the highest ratio of return on equity (28.1%) and current assets/current liabilities (2.01). This means the industry has a high profitability and a short-term financial strength. Among the five industries, the upscale apparel retailer is the best choice. This because the upscale apparel is usually marketed with a higher sale prices but has lowest cost, which will cause a relative high profit. Also, during the economic crisis, customers would has less purchase power to buy expensive unnecessary life product in a short time, and it might......

...Civil Engineering Students at Polytechnic University of the Philippines Fig 1 shows the linkage between different factors and academic performance. It shows that academic performance as a dependent variable is related to the dependent variables, which are students’ personal motivations, socio-economic status, classroom settings and school background. The first dependent variable is former school background, which was conceptualized as ownership of former school, (public or private). That is the type of school a student attends is likely to contribute to their academic performance of the student in future. Students from high-class schools are likely to perform well due to the fact that they attended those schools. An argument supported by Considine and Zappala (2002) Kwesiga (2002) and Sentamu (2003). The second dependent variable is the students’ personal motivations, which has five options: acceptance to graduate school, attention of future employers, outside motivations, competition with fellow students and self-recognition. That is, the more motivation a student had he/she would have a higher GPA than students that did not have any or little motivation. According to the conceptual framework, parents’ social economic status, which was conceptualized as parents’ education, and parents’ income, is linked to academic performance. The figure shows that academic performance is dependent on parents’ social economic status. That is students from high social economic......

...Construction Engineering This civil engineering branch deals with the planning, construction and maintenance of structures. Construction engineering is the planning and execution of designs from site development, environmental, structural, transportation and structural engineers. They must ensure that the plans that have been designed by other engineers are implemented to their exact specifications. Construction engineers will supervise field work during the entire project. They are in a sense a cross between an engineer and manager as they will oversee the project from start to finish and handle any problems that come up throughout the duration of the project. Structural Engineering This branch of civil engineering encompasses the structural analysis and design of structures. It is the responsibility of the structural engineer to analyze and design a structure that will safely bear or resist the stresses, forces and loads. The design must satisfy the project specifications while meeting all safety regulations. The structure must endure massive loads as well as natural disasters and climate changes. Geotechnical Engineering In geotechnical engineering the engineer studies soil, foundations and bearing capacities. The engineer will study the behavior of the earth materials and how they will affect a structure that is to be constructed. They will also evaluate pre-existing structures that are showing signs of problems with the earth materials under or near the......

...abrasives belong to the fine ceramics category. The category of coarse ceramics includes, for example, brick or conventional refractory materials. It also refers to  refers to ceramic products for engineering applications. High-performance ceramic is defined in DIN V ENV 12 212 as a "highly-developed, high-strength ceramic material, which is primarily non-metallic and inorganic and possesses specific functional attributes." The concept high-performance ceramics is primarily used to distinguish them from traditional ceramics based on clay, including tableware, sanitary ware, walls and floor tiles as well as ceramics for civil engineering. This definition agrees with that of the "Japanese Fine Ceramics Association". Structural or construction ceramics are terms that have not yet been standardised, referring to materials that in some way must withstand mechanical stresses, bending or pressure for example. Functional ceramics are high-performance ceramics in which the inherent characteristics of the material play an active role, for example ceramic parts which possess specific electric, magnetic, dielectric or optical properties. Electrical ceramics are high-performance ceramics that are applied because of their specific electric or electronic characteristics. Electrical engineering applications make use primarily of the excellent insulating characteristics and mechanical strength. The electronics industry also takes advantage of characteristics such as ferroelectric......

...ENB100 - ENGINEERING & SUSTAINABILITY Progress Report (due in Wk12 Tutorial) ! Student Name: ! Student # Your task: Your role as a professional engineer will require you to assess multiple solutions for a single problem. Often, the suitability of the solution has little to do with the price or the provider but more to do with ‘fitness for purpose’. As such, it is vital that a structured process is used to identify the most appropriate solution. This process is called an evaluation matrix. ! Your task is two-fold. Firstly, in your own words, you need to define the term ‘evaluation matrix’. Make sure your definition relates to the engineering context and provide robust references. Secondly, you need to develop suitable criteria for use in your final project. Ensure you use clear and measurable criteria that take into account the client needs. ! ! ! 1. Definition An Evaluation matrices are used in the engineering profession as a tool to evaluate a number of different types of options against a prioritised criteria. If the design ideas do not meet the criteria then two different levels of the evaluation matrices can be used. The first level effectively acts as a filter with each different option evaluating it against the mandatory criteria. (UCLA, 1-2, 2014) para The design options that meed these mandatory criteria then go on to the second level with involves them being evaluated against prioritised criteria. This is vital this......

...Task 1 Why does engineering equipment fail, what happens when it does and what can we do about it? Equipment’s fails because certain parts of it fail first and that prevents the whole process from working. It is important to understand the problem before any maintenance. There are a lot of reasons it could fail because of the age of the equipment and parts need to be changed or if the equipment vibrates nuts and bolts can be loosen and parts can fall apart. When this happens the machine needs to be stopped and maintained. Age is very important if the machine has been used for a very long time the efficiency and the quality wouldn’t be as good as a new one, a machine has a certain life span for example on a car the timing belt must be replaced after every 50,000 miles. Wear could lead to a fault in a machine because parts come into contact with each other for example a cars break pad. Corrosion in certain materials takes longer than others like aluminium, when a part of a machine corrodes it degrade and can cause failures. Raw materials such as oil and compressed air can run equipment’s. If something different unwanted to the equipment is in it, it can affect the way the machine works. For example water in a petrol tank will cause a car to break down and this is a fouling. Lack of maintenance can cause a fail, routine maintenance such as cleaning and lubrication. This cause for example in a factory that is manufacturing can will stop the line and check the cars in that line......

Economics of Human Robotic Engineering

...consideration the economics of bionic human engineering because there are multiple parties involved in these considerations that include, the scientists, the patients, the doctors, the investors and the insurance companies. The culmination of these entities are what drive the research to happen in the first place based on the supply and demand strategies that the business environment drives. The interest in this technology for the scientist can stem from several different interests like personal interest in helping others, expanding technology, producing new ideas, and mainly an income source that will provide profitability for themselves and the companies that they work under. This profit margin on these types of technologies is what drives large scale companies to invest time and money into researching bionic engineering for human use. The risk of developing this type of technology is huge based on the amount of money needed to invest initially while still maintaining continuous investments throughout the life of the project itself. The benefits that all of these companies strive to obtain becomes endless once they have a working prototype that they can present to other investors. Most of these companies decide to produce the products themselves once they have perfected it, but there is a small amount that will sell the results to a company that is willing to then take on the responsibility of manufacturing the products. Overall the underlying priority of human bionic......
