SGL 407: Engineering geology

This is a grey to dark grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock. It occurs in association with either granite or gabbro intrusions.
Diorite results from partial melting of mafic rock above a subduction zone. The extrusive equivalent rock type is andesite
Diorites in Kenya are found in kakamega dome area, mt. Kenya region, mutito Andei area, matuu-masinga areas in central Kenya and along the Kenyan rift (bogoria region)
Quartzite is a quartz-rich metamorphic rock, often formed from quartz rich sandstone. The quartz crystals are typically much more tightly interlocked in the quartzite, and the quartzite is more compact, denser, and stronger rock than the original sandstone.
Quartzites are found in the Mozambique belt which consists largely of metamorphic rocks. In Kenya they are found to occur mainly in the eastern province that is Kitui county, Machakos county and Mbeere area in Embu
These are chemical sediments basically formed by chemical processes usually from direct precipitation of solutions
They are actually minerals but since they have extensive impurities they are referred to as rocks. Evaporite rocks show ancient conditions of extensive evaporation. Examples of these include;
Gypsum deposits (CaSO4.2H2o), anhydrite (CaSO4), and rock salt (Nacl)
They occur in Lake Magadi area and Kajiado in Kenya

Conglomerate and breccias
These are clastic sedimentary rocks formed from the products of the mechanical break up of other rocks. They are coarse grained.
Conglomerate is a coarse-grained rock with fragments above 2mm in diameter, and sometimes larger. Most of the grains are rounded
Breccias are similar to conglomerates in size but most of the clasts fragments are angular

The earliest practices of Civil engineering may have commenced between 4000 and 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (Ancient Iraq) when humans started to abandon a nomadic existence, thus causing a need for the construction of shelter. During this time, transportation became increasingly important leading to the development of the wheel and sailing. Until modern times there was no clear distinction between civil engineering and architecture, and the term engineer and architect were mainly geographical variations referring to the same person, often used interchangeably. The construction of Pyramids in Egypt (circa 2700-2500 BC) might be considered the first instances of large structure constructions. In the 18th century, the term civil engineering was coined to incorporate all things civilian as opposed to military engineering. The first engineering school, The National School of Bridges and Highways, France, was opened in 1747. The first self-proclaimed civil engineer was John Smeaton who constructed the Eddystone Lighthouse. In 1771, Smeaton and some of his colleagues formed the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers, a group of leaders of the profession who met informally over dinner. ...When I initially decided to take this geology course it was just to take a science class online that fit with my work schedule Now that I’m about to complete the semester I am ready to show just how much I learned. Sedimentary landforms are created by tiny particles of earth. These particles can be anything from stone to glass or tile. These particles are caused by weathering which is described as any natural force that breaks rocks into smaller pieces. The particles get washed away by rain, wind and water and eventually are deposited at the basin of rivers, lakes and oceans. When one layer solidifies another begins. This is known as deposition, one key factor is that these particles begin to settle so that the heavier pieces settle first and they settle deep. The smaller particles then build on top of them. After all of the deposition is done erosion takes place. During this process the rocks are weathered again. Then these particles undergo the lithification process by changing into rocks by compaction and cementation. The mineralogy of sedimentary rocks is made up of grains and cement. The clastic rocks were physically transported by wind, water, glaciers or gravity. When these rocks can no longer be moved they are deposited in either a high energy environment or a low energy environment. Van Arsdale and Randel T. Cox shed light on the mysterious Mississippi Embayment. They begin by explaining the origins of the horseshoe-shaped lowland that is underlain by massive quantities of sand, silt and mud deposits. They begin at what geologist call Pangea, which is when North America, South America, Africa and Eurasia came together to form one supercontinent. This collision raised several mountain ranges, including the Ouachita-Appalachian. Diamonds are classified as minerals. They contain a crystalline structure and are a solid. Wood is not a mineral due to chemical composition and organic materials. Although my family moved to the US before I entered high school, I have always kept my eyes turned north, especially in recent years as I began to read journal articles about research conducted on John Evans Glacier, located about 80 N latitude.
