The Eternal Security of the Believer
Whether or not a saved person can be lost again is a much discussed, a much disputed question. Certainly the devil hates for one to believe that a Christian is safe because this would give God all the glory. The doctrine of security gives no credit to the devil or to humans. God gets all the glory for saving and keeping. So it is the doctrine that the devil hates more than any other. Therefore if one dislikes this doctrine, you know whose side he is on.
The words "eternal security" are not found in the Bible. But neither is the word substitute, or the word Trinity. Yet Christians have always believed that Christ was our substitute; that God is a Trinity. Though the exact word that we may use is not found in the Bible, the teaching is there! The terminology used by some when discussing the doctrine of the safety of the Believer may not be found exactly per say but the teaching is there, without doubt. The Bible says, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous runeth into it and is safe." (Proverbs 18:10) "The fear of man bringeth a snare, but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe." (Proverbs 29:25) The word "safe" used in both these verses, is an absolute term. You cannot be half safe. If you are only half safe then you are not safe. If you are safe then you are not in any danger. You are not safe until you are completely out of danger. The Bible says those who have trusted Christ are safe. The Bible is either right or wrong. We are safe or we are not. I believe the Bible.
While the term "eternal security" is not used in the Bible, all phases of our salvation are said to be eternal. In fact, our salvation is called "eternal salvation" in Hebrews 5:9. The life we receive at salvation is eternal life. (I John 5:13) We have eternal redemption. (Hebrews 9:12) Believers have an eternal inheritance. (Hebrews…...

Gilgamesh's Quest for Eternal Life

...man, the end of life is sorrow” (93). Shamash, the sun god, consoles Enkidu by reminding him how rich his life has been. The comfort the sun god offers Enkidu is indeed humanistic. The god tells him that love, glory, and the pleasures of a cultivated life are important, as are being loved while alive and mourned when dead. This consolation offers a strange kind of comfort, since he is essentially saying that the recompense for losing the life he cherished is the life he cherished. The dream proves true when Enkidu is cursed with an inglorious, painful death. Enkidu finally resigns himself to his fate, and as a result, Gilgamesh is terrified by the thought of his own death. Gilgamesh takes it upon himself to go on a quest in search of eternal life. One of the three characters Gilgamesh meets throughout his search for everlasting life recognizes him when they see him, and they all give him the same advice, which emphasizes that he should stop his quest for immortality. After going into the darkness of the mountains, Gilgamesh comes out and finds the sun, there he speaks and says “No mortal man has gone this way before, nor will, as long as the winds drive over the sea” and Shamash responds back with “You will never find the life for which you are searching” (100). Each of the Gods Gilgamesh encounters along his way, takes note of Gilgamesh’s unkempt appearance, listens patiently as he describes his terror of death, and reminds him that death is certain and life is all we......

Eternal Sunshine

...Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The most significant dream element that I see in this film is the fact that time becomes fluid. It does in fact become fluid throughout the whole film. Past, present, and future all become mixed up and happen at the same time. When the film begins, we see what we believe, and the characters believe to be their first encounter. “Have we met before?” Clementine asks, and Joel says that they haven’t. Clementine keeps feeling like they have, and Joel brings up that he has seen her at her place of work, Barnes and Noble. Looking back, this is significant because we later realize that this is not the first time that they’ve met, and they actually knew each other quite well. We find out not long after this scene that Clementine has taken means to erase Joel entirely from her memory. To spite Clementine, Joel decides to do the same. Throughout the rest of the film, time becomes very fluid. Past memories, and things that are currently happening in the room are seen from Joel in a dreamlike state. He is asleep, and getting his memories erased. Throughout the dreaming, he is aware of Clementine, and he decides that he does not want to get his memories of her erased. In order to try to keep her in his memories, he goes back and forth while dreaming from the present to different times in his past. Some of the memories stem all the way back to his childhood, the most embarrassing memories that he long tried to forget. The dreams...

Eternal Pursuit of Unhappiness

...“ Being very good is no good, you have to be very, very, very, very, very good” I got this book on my first day; everyone in the agency got one. The eternal pursuit of unhappiness, the title of this crimson bible like book, about David Ogilvy’s ideal of what he thinks is the most prominent character that a highly creative person should possess. This little book changed the way I think and my altitude at work. At the time I read it, I did not quite understand what it talked about at first. I thought I was either getting dumber after 2 months away from school or this book just plain boring. Until now, after more than two months into my internship, I started to really understand what the book really meant. The book captured a share belief that you should never be satisfies with yourself, you must always learn and make things better than the last time because “ when we green, we grow. When we ripe we rot.” The book started out with eight virtue habits of a creative person. There are courage, idealism, curiosity, playfulness, candour, intuition, free spiritedness, and persistence. These habits are not only proprietary to advertising, but it is necessary for everyone to be a successful person. Courage, this character is one of the most important because fear will suck away the youth, the adventure and our imagination. It will leads to self-doubt, and in the absent of courage, nothing good can be accomplished. Courage is the first habit that I related to. It is the first......

Philosophy of Religion - Eternal Damnation

...Question 4 Based on the traditional view of eternal damnation, everyone is judged upon his or her death. The judgment one receives is based on the choices they make throughout their life. If they make the right choices, they will be rewarded with entrance into Heaven to live alongside God. If they make the wrong choices, however, they are damned to Hell to suffer eternally. The problem with this view of eternal damnation is that the determining factors are seemingly unfair. Without enough epistemic facts, one is forced to choose between various different religions and beliefs, some of which revolve around God, some of which don’t. Even deciding not to make a choice is making a choice – a choice not to believe in God. This traditional view creates two problems: (1) that God delivers unjust punishments to those who choose to sin, regardless of how little evidence they have about what choices they should make, and (2) that God may be unloving of his subjects. Seeking to defend the traditional view of eternal damnation, Murray evaluates two models of hell that Christians commonly endorse, which he calls the penalty model and the natural consequence model. As he analyzes objections to each model, Murray concludes that the best defense for the traditional view of eternal damnation is a combination of the two, a hybrid model. The penalty model presents an idea that all humans who are guilty of sin must pay a penalty, and so are punished with spiritual death. However, since Jesus...

Eternal Love for Annabel Lee

...Love is a powerful force that is unseen yet is so influential in the way people behave. In the poem Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator experiences an attraction so strong that it transcends the living world. Poe focuses on the eternal love between the narrator and Annabel Lee; how the love between these two star-crossed lovers exists even after death. With the use of poetic devices such as tone, imagery, symbolism, repetition and rhyme, Poe tells a powerful story about love. This poem takes the form of a ballad. Poe uses this form to tell the story of the narrator and Annabel Lee. Characteristics that make this poem a ballad are its strong rhythms, repetition of key phrases and rhymes. As a ballad, this poem is very song-like. It is easy to imagine Poe reading this story of love and death intimately to a group of people. The tone of the author is both resentful and passionate. He is resentful of the angels who took Annabel away from him before her time. At the same time, he is also passionate. Poe writes, “And neither the angels in Heaven above/ Nor the demons down under the sea/ Can ever dissever my soul from the soul/ Of the beautiful Annabel Lee”, this shows that even though they have been physically separated, their love continues to grow stronger. In addition, Poe uses end rhyme to emphasize the poem’s subject. Every other line ends with an ee sound, “sea”, “me” and “we” all rhyme with Lee. This makes it clear to the reader that she important to the author. ...

Eternal Sunshine Summary

...Eternal Sunshine Summary In Bad Memories, Good Decisions, And The Three Joel’s by Valerie Tiberius, she explains how memories distort the past and can cause you to make impulsive decisions. She makes a reference to Eternal Sunshine of how distorting memory can affect you. “When Joel wants to have Clementine erased from his memory, he is remembering the worst of their times together, one of which is their time together.” (Tiberius 63) This statement supports her thesis of how memories can distort the past. The film also gives us the visual point of view of how it can affect you as stated in Tiberius’s essay she also points out how there are three different types of Joel’s present in the movie. Tiberius explains how the movie shows you three different types of Joel’s, the bitter Joel, the spotless Joel, and the sadder but wiser Joel. She explains how all these Joel’s mistakes can affect their future. First Tiberius’s explains how the spotless minded Joel whose mind is clear, no worries and yet no past experiences to learn from. This can affect any relationship that could possibly happen with Clementine because they would head down the same road that they have just previously left for a reason. She states how this Joel is not wise at all and incapable of making good decisions for himself. Tiberius’s talks about the bitter Joel which is one whom is upset with Clementine and acts on impulse to have her erased from her memory because she did it, he was acting based off......

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

...Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind follows the relationship of Joel and Clementine. From both recently breaking up together, Joel in an attempt to win her back finds out that she has had her memory erased of him. She does so by a company called Lacuna, which is able to select memories of people or a time and erase them. Joel ends up doing the same thing and while his memories are erased of her, he realizes what a huge mistake it was. During this film, there are interweaving story lines that all weave within Joel’s sleeping state while his memory is being erased. The main character Joel’s moral decision he makes during the film is to have his memory erased of Clementine like he did of her. While Joel is hurt at the realization that Clementine has done this, he decides to have the procedure done as well so that they both are not hurt when they see each other ever again. Joel as well believes this is the best option as in the film, it seems she has already moved on with someone new and believes he should do the same for himself. This idea of erasing his own memory as well leads to him following the Utilitarianism view. Utilitarianism says that one should always choose the action which consequences yield the largest net gain of happiness over pain, for everyone (Turetzky, 2013). Joel believes as he does not want to feel the pain of loss for Clementine anymore. As well as the Doctor who gives the procedure likens the......

Security

...Security Students Name Institutions Name How to resolve a security issue in a situation where the need for security is great but the available funds are limited Community participation is a very important aspect in enhancing security. Through the community’s leaders individuals can be sensitized on the need to protect each other and also help them to create a ‘we’ feeling in the management of the important resources in a region. This will enable the community members to identify with the resources and wealth of a region and hence strive to protect it by all means. Governments and administrative officials should also involve the locals in making of decisions that are of utmost importance to the people’s welfare (Bakari, Magnusson, Tarimo, & Yngström, 2006). The benefits if personnel in security management develop skills as educators for their organization's security Having high skilled employees who are given the potential to grow their expertise is a great benefit to any organization. An organizations success can often be attributed to individual expertise and skills of its employees. The benefits are as follows: 1. Cuts on the costs of hiring external consultants; many organizations spend a lot of money in hiring third party consultants to cover essential tasks within the organization such as periodic network vulnerability scans and developing security programs. The cost of sending employees to the requisite training may be relatively cheaper (McCoy &......

Security

...Security is the degree of resistance to, or protection from, harm. It applies to any vulnerable and valuable asset, such as a person, dwelling, community, nation, or organization. As noted by the Institute for Security and Open Methodologies (ISECOM) in the OSSTMM 3, security provides "a form of protection where a separation is created between the assets and the threat." These separations are generically called "controls," and sometimes include changes to the asset or the threat.[1] Perception of security may be poorly mapped to measureable objective security. For example, the fear of earthquakes has been reported to be more common than the fear of slipping on the bathroom floor although the latter kills many more people than the former.[2] Similarly, the perceived effectiveness of security measures is sometimes different from the actual security provided by those measures. The presence of security protections may even be taken for security itself. For example, two computer security programs could be interfering with each other and even cancelling each other's effect, while the owner believes s/he is getting double the protection. Security theater is a critical term for deployment of measures primarily aimed at raising subjective security without a genuine or commensurate concern for the effects of that measure on objective security. For example, some consider the screening of airline passengers based on static databases to have been Security Theater and Computer......

Eternal Punishment

...Eternal Punishment As a child growing up all I heard was you either do good and go to heaven or you do wrong and go to hell. That’s the Christian way of thinking and that’s the way it is. While I grew stronger in the religion and began to be able to see the bigger picture, I then was in turn able to make a decision for myself what was the right thing. Through reading the Bible, going to church, and listening to elders, deacons, and pastors I determined that this was indeed the Christian view of eternal state that I believed in. There were however a few blanks that had to be filled in, like; 1) Where do we go when we die? 2) What is Heaven? 3) What is Hell? and 4) What is the rapture? These are all questions that many have asked and many have to have the answer to in order to make an educated decision about what religion to follow and what end of time theory to believe in. The Bible states in 2 Corinthians 5:10, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” In the end, there will be an eternal punishment and only you can determine what your fate will be. In order to stand behind the Christian view of the end of times you must first prove there is a heaven and hell. Let’s start by talking about heaven. Webster’s dictionary defines heaven as, “1.a place regarded in various religions as the abode of God (or the gods) and the angels, and......

Eternal Loneliness

...Eternal Loneliness Only Lovers Left Alive is a movie about a short piece of two vampire lovers’ common life. I always believe vampires are the most pathetic population in the universe. Living in the dark and abandoned by the god and the people, what is the point having everlasting life the superpower. Actually not only the vampires I take pity on, but all the immortal creatures. Being immortal means witnessing lovers and friends passed away infinitely. Dracula waited his reincarnation wife for four hundred years; Legolas said goodbye to his dearest friends – Aragon and Gimli. Confronted with immortal, time would be bondage of the soul. Even they could share the everlasting life with their lovers, time can still become the time bomb of the relationship. The person has to return to single again, and wandering brimless cage of time. Due to the everlasting life, the person would have done almost everything in the world. Having a future without love must be much more inane and lonely for having experienced love before. Love is the only thing that makes them feel alive in loneliness. Only Lovers Left Alive is the first vampire-themed movie that described detailed daily life of a couple of vampires. By the time there are no werewolves, hunters, and witches, the conventional natural enemies, time is the only thing left turning against vampires. Everyone came to the universe alone, and then facing death by themselves. Escaping from the last trial, the alternation...

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

...Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a movie released in 2004 and directed by Michael Gondry. It is a 21-century example of the genre called “comedy of remarriage,” which is a subgenre of American comedy films of the 1930s and 1940s. Comedies of remarriage usually display a characteristic view of the reconciliation of troubled relationships. The plot of the movie revolves around the idea of erasing selected memories from people’s minds. In the film, the two main characters – Joel and Clementine – with the aid of Dr. Mierzwiak and his peculiar technology, decide to undergo a process by which they have the memories of each other erased. The idea of altering memories is controversial and it has led to many doubts and questions about morality and possible consequences of such procedures. First, there is the ethical aspect of erasing someone’s memories. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind raises the question: are there ethical reasons to try to stick to certain memories? Analyzing the movie, we can conclude that the answer is “yes.” Accodring to Professor of Philosophy Avishai Margalit, human relations are divided into thick and thin ones. The idea is that memory serves to connect us to others, and is necessary for thick relations. Trying to hold on to these thick relations and certain memories is one basic requirement of human flourishing. Although the movie justifies the decision to erase memories, as its aim is to lessen the pain those memories cause, the act of......

Athens, the Original Eternal City

...Athens, the Original Eternal City They say Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither was Athens. Though the Athenians never managed to build an empire the size of Rome’s, they did spread their culture and ideas throughout the Mediterranean. Athens during the Classical, or Hellenic, period (500-340 B.C.E) can easily be compared to Rome at its height in terms of art, and architecture, and far surpassed it in philosophy. While Rome was still struggling for independence from its Etruscan masters, Athens was the center of the Hellenic world. While Alexander the Great was learning from his Athenian tutor, Rome was putting down Latin rebellions. Even under Roman rule, Athens was favored for its ancient accomplishments. Rome may be the Eternal City, but it is simply a backwater pretender to Athens. Democracy is probably Athens most well known characteristic, but it was not always that way. Like every other Greek city during the Mycenaean period (1500-1200 B.C.E.), Athens was once ruled by a king. Little is known of Athens during this period, though the archeological record combined with popular myth from later periods may give us an insight. The names of several legendary kings of Athens have come down to us: in particular Erectheus, the first king, who was believed to have established the worship of the goddess Athena on the Acropolis, and Theseus, killer of the Minotaur, who (according to the Greek historian Plutarch) unified Attica (Connolly 10). Legend tells......
