External Quality Management Organizations

In today’s volatile business environment, it is vital for a company to continue its focus on quality throughout its supply chain. Although it is important for a company to conduct its own quality checks, it may also benefit a company to seek out external quality management organizations to assist with learning more about quality. These organizations specialize in supply chain quality and offer an objective viewpoint to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses that may be overlooked by the company. In this paper, two external quality management organizations are identified and their respective primary focus areas or services will be provided. Second, the organization’s similarities and differences will be compared and contrasted. Third, the benefits for a company using these organization’s services will be discussed and evaluated. Finally, the choice of using one of these organizations will provide a company any technological, global, or competitive advantage over choosing not to use one of these organizations will be analyzed.

External Quality Management Organizations

There may be a time when a company finds it helpful to have an external party study the company’s quality processes to assist in identifying areas that need improvement (Foster, 2007). An external quality management organization can offer a different perspective on quality issues that a company may miss while conducting their own quality checks. This objective perspective can shed light on issues such as a company’s quality processes, procedures, structure, or resources. These issues may be overlooked because the company may be too close to the quality problems to see where the issues are.

EVALUATING QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS Abstract Purpose Despite the abundance of research on quality management there is no universal consensus on how best to measure quality in higher education. This paper undertakes a critical evaluation of the different methods used to assess the quality of provision in higher education departments in the UK. Methodology Drawing on relevant literature, the authors develop a quality audit tool that incorporates all key components of effective quality management programmes and apply it to a single UK case study department. Findings The findings suggest that the potential for quality enhancement is determined by the manner in which the evaluation is conducted and subsequent change implemented. Perhaps unsurprisingly there is currently an emphasis on internally derived quantitative data and there is potential to enhance the management of the quality of HE programmes. Research Limitations/Implications This article has concentrated on the development of the quality audit tool and tested this within one UK department.
