Fig 1 shows the linkage between different factors and academic performance. It shows that academic performance as a dependent variable is related to the dependent variables, which are students’ personal motivations, socio-economic status, classroom settings and school background.

The first dependent variable is former school background, which was conceptualized as ownership of former school, (public or private). That is the type of school a student attends is likely to contribute to their academic performance of the student in future. Students from high-class schools are likely to perform well due to the fact that they attended those schools. An argument supported by Considine and Zappala (2002) Kwesiga (2002) and Sentamu (2003).
The second dependent variable is the students’ personal motivations, which has five options: acceptance to graduate school, attention of future employers, outside motivations, competition with fellow students and self-recognition. That is, the more motivation a student had he/she would have a higher GPA than students that did not have any or little motivation.

According to the conceptual framework, parents’ social economic status, which was conceptualized as parents’ education, and parents’ income, is linked to academic performance. The figure shows that academic performance is dependent on parents’ social economic status. That is students from high social economic backgrounds will perform better than their counter parts from low social economic backgrounds as discussed. This is supported by Dills (2006) and Owens (1999). It is also in line with Hansen and Mastekaasa (2006) who argued that according to the cultural capital theory one could expect students from families who are closest to the academic culture to have greatest success.

Primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire from final year students of engineering departments of universities of Lahore. The objective of this study was to examine factors such as academic competence, test competence, time management, strategic studying, and test anxiety, and identify whether these factors could distinguish differences among students, based on academic performance and enrollment in the experiential program. Methods. A cross-sectional study design utilizing questionnaires measuring previously validated constructs was used to evaluate the effect of these factors on students with low and high cumulative grade point averages (GPAs). Pharmacy students (N 5 198) enrolled at the University of Houston participated in the study. Results. Academic performance was significantly associated with factors such as academic competence and test competence. Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater significantly differed in their level of test competence than those with a GPA of less than 3.0. Students enrolled in their experiential year differed from students enrolled in their second year of curriculum on factors such as test anxiety, academic competence, test competence, and time management skills.
