MANAGEMENT OF THE CHILD WITH FEVER Aim To manage the symptoms of fever so as to reduce the child's discomfort. Key points 1. Fever is a sign of illness/inflammation. Uncomplicated fever is relatively harmless, and is fact an important immunologic defence mechanism 2. The cause of the fever should be the focus of treatment. Indications to intervene 1. The intervention has the potential to increase the child’s comfort level (or decrease their discomfort). 2. The purpose of intervening can be clearly identified. 3. Reduction of parental anxiety could arise from the intervention. 4. Any harm that might result from intervening (e.g. increased discomfort or risk of liver damage) has been balanced against the expected benefits. 5. Symptoms associated with fever which may respond to nursing intervention include: • Flushing of the skin • Skin feels warm to touch • Thirst • Sweating • Headache • Weakness and aching of body parts • Irritability or restlessness • Dehydration associated with vomiting and or diarrhoea 6. In the case of high temperatures disorientation and convulsions may also be observed PROCEDURE To enable the effectiveness of interventions to be assessed, a baseline temperature should be taken before implementing any care. 1. Assess the need to intervene Interventions should be directed toward reducing the child’s discomfort, not the fever. Interventions should always be assessed in terms of potential risks. 2. In the first instance: • • • Remove excess clothing or wrappings. Light clothing an bedding is preferred Ensure air can circulate around the child. Do not use fans or direct air conditioner on to the child. Encourage fluids - 1/24 during the day

Hay Fever

...Hay Fever was a comical play with a strong message. The actors throughout this play steadily used others to gain their own attention. The message this play left behind after many laughs was do not use others, plain and simple. The space was a well-constructed thrust stage however, the stage was not raised off the ground and the seats appeared to be mobile which lead to the belief that this is an Environmental Theater. As for the layout of the stage, there was a couch and a table in center stage for the first two acts, a door to the unseen outside front of the house upstage right, there were two large double doors upstage center leading to the backyard garden, and a raised floor upstage left containing a piano, a bookcase and a door leading to the home library. Stage left there was a half spiral staircase that lead up to the second floor which had a painting and lights that extended across to stage right. The second floor also contained the bedrooms for the house but the doors were not in sight. The detail was greater than expected: the hardwood floor throughout the first floor seemed to be genuine, the actual bookcase filled with real books not stage books, and the extremely large double doors with translucent glass and floral designs lead to the Garden, which featured an array of plants behind the doors. Hay Fever

...Hay Fever A runny nose, stuffed nose, wheezing, facial pressure and pain, coughing, watery, itchy and swelling eyes are all symptoms of this yearly burden. Breathing difficulties at night, violent sneezing, and constant rubbing of the eyes are what this allergy is feared for. Effects may be felt almost immediately after exposure and can even develop to an extreme state causing Asthma or Eczema. Though a common and not so deadly allergy, this affliction has plagued my family through the generations. Merriam-Webster defines Hay Fever as an allergic reaction to pollen. Technically, any body temperature above the normal oral measurement of 98.6 F (37 C) or the normal rectal temperature of 99 F (37.2 C) is considered to be elevated. Fever is just one part of an illness, many times no more important than the presence of other symptoms such as cough, sore throat, fatigue, joint pains or aches, chills, nausea, etc. Fevers of 104 F (40 C) or higher demand immediate home treatment and subsequent medical attention, as they can result in delirium and convulsions, particularly in infants and children.
