Board Structure

...11/06/2012 Destination Management Plan: IACC internal board structure and terms of reference Introduction Put simply by Visit Wales, destination management is “…coordinating all the activities and services which impact on the visitor and their enjoyment of a destination”. Effective, quality destination management requires the involvement of all stakeholders through clear communication and transparent decision-making. In particular, this requires pro-active engagement between the three key partners: the local authority as destination managers, the private sector as the service providers and the North Wales Regional Tourism Partnership (TPNW), acting on behalf of Visit Wales. It also requires the involvement of a range of other parties with an interest in tourism, subject to local circumstances. There also needs to be a clear structure, terms of reference and lines of communication within the private and public sector partners/groups. There is no formally prescribed model for partnership working in destinations within or between the sectors. Different arrangements are being made in different areas and the local situation might require a tailored solution(s). It will be important to be flexible and adapt any model as experience dictates. The local authority’s role and structure in the context of the DMP The local authority comprises a large number of departments, most of which involve or have a bearing on the tourism sector. These are listed below with their tourism......

Home Insulation Program

...Home Insulation Program The economic melt-down of many developed countries caused by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) has seen a world-wide swing to Keynesian economic policies. In an effort to boost the economies and reduce unemployment, many governments have conceived different strategies of direct intervention and increase public spending to stimulate economic activities. There are still intense debates about the main reasons why Australia has weathered the GFC much better than the others. The Home Insulation Program (HIP), also known as the Pink Batts Scheme, was primarily designed to boost the domestic economy in 2009 following the GFC, but it was beset by controversy. The $2.8 billion job-generating scheme, offering free insulation to two million households, was scrapped prematurely in 2010 after it was blamed for the deaths of four insulation workers and more than 100 house fires. This essay will attempt to analyse the impact of the HIP and argue whether governments (Commonwealth or States) or business were responsible for the health and safety of workers involved with the HIP. In February 2009, the Rudd government (Government) unveiled the HIP as part of its stimulus package in respond to the GFC. This program may have been stemmed from Kevin Rudd’s (2009, pp 28-29) belief that “Labor, in the international tradition of social democracy, consistently argues for a central role for government in the regulation of markets and the provision of public goods”; and it has......

Boards

...Introduction The nomination and election of a board of directors is a critical event for an organization. Selecting the right individuals to comprise the board that will provide adequate oversight and ensure alignment of management to that of shareholders and stakeholders best interests is vital to the success of the company. This paper explores how boards are formed, how individuals become part of boards, the type of individuals that should comprise a board, CEO duality and the advantages and disadvantages of having non-executive board members. How Boards are formed When forming a board of directors the c-suite should see the board and its members as a strategic partner rather than as a necessary requirement a corporation must have. The initial question that must be answered when considering forming a board of directors is what type of board does your organization need and select appropriate board leadership that meets the needs of your organization. In forming a board of directors many things must be taken into consideration such as the composition of the board, the number of board members, committee structure, roles and responsibilities, evaluation metrics for board performance and meeting frequency. Each of these elements will lead to the success of the board creating a strong platform for corporate governance. How do individuals become part of the Board of directors (Methods / Process)? In Canada upon incorporation of a company the......

Environmental Impact of a Foam Cup

...A foam cup, also referred to as a styrofoam cup is a disposable drinking cup made of plastic, expanded polystyrene (EPS) to be exact. Despite seeming like a very mundane and trivial product, it’s formulation is extensive, covering crude oil extraction, refining, chemical transformation, distribution, retail, and disposal. Both the production and disposal of foam cups also have serious environmental impacts and its widespread use has generated significant recycling issues. Raw Material Extraction The lifecycle of a foam cup begins with the extraction of crude oil by oil rigs both on-shore and from beneath the sea floor in the Gulf of Mexico. These rigs require large amounts of manpower and energy and freshwater to operate, and pose a real threat for potential spills which can damage and harm marine ecology. Refining of Material Crude oil is unusable as it comes out of the ground. It must be purified and separated into its useful components, which is where the oil refinery comes in. The US Gulf Coast has the largest concentration of refineries in the world. It is from the refinery that we get transportation fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. It is also where we get raw materials for the chemical industry. For the production of plastics we get naphtha, which are 5 to 9 carbon chains that can be used as the raw material in a plant to make ethylene and benzene. Benzene and ethylene are subsequently reacted in another plant to make styrene. ......

Board Meeting

...The Board Meeting The Board meets at least five times each year and in addition, a regular update conference call takes place in the months when no formal meeting is scheduled. The agenda for each Board meeting is set by the Chairman in consultation with the Chief Executive and the Company Secretary. Board members receive a monthly report of the company’s activities which incorporates an update on progress against objectives and the management of business risks. The core activities of the Board are carried out in scheduled meetings of the Board and its Committees. Additional ad hoc meetings and conference calls are arranged to consider matters which require decisions outside the scheduled meetings Outside the scheduled meetings of the Board, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer maintain frequent contact with the other Directors to discuss any issues of concern they may have relating to the Group or their areas of responsibility, and to keep them fully briefed on the Group’s operations. To ensure that the Board sees the Company’s operations overseers, the Board normally holds at least one Board meeting each year at one of the principal overseer’s offices of the Group. This provides Senior Management from across the Group with the opportunity to present to the Board and to meet the Board members informally. It also provides the Board with an opportunity to meet a broad cross-section of staff, to assess senior managers at first hand and to review operational and......

Arctic Insulation

...Arctic Insulation Arctic Insulation is a company that uses scrap paper along with fiber to produce insulation material used in home attics. They have two sources of the paper used to produce insulation; bulk paper from scrap dealers, and buying paper from the public at nominal rates. The direct labor cost for processing the bulk paper is much higher at $3.84 per bale compared to $.60 per bale for the purchased bales. The price per pound of scrap paper varies significantly based on market conditions. The unit cost per bale appears to be falling which would agree with the General Manager’s alternative cost report. It’s hard to accurately compare the costs of producing each bale if total costs aren’t taken into account. Basing the overhead costs on a percentage of direct labor vastly understates overhead for the purchased bales, since a larger percentage of the total cost is the cost to purchase paper. Since the cost of purchasing paper is collected at the divisional level, it isn’t considered in this calculation. Taking a total of the depot and divisional overhead values and dividing them by the total number of bales produced and adding that figure to an actual direct labor cost per bale would produce a more accurate total overhead value. In 1979, the total unit cost per bale was ($10,697,050/1,355,000) $7.89. In 1980, the total unit cost per bale was ($9,636,970/1,650,000) $5.84. Using the General Managers method of distributing overhead, the cost......

Melamine Foam

...ingredient is melamine foam. Melamine foam is manufactured in Germany and is used as an insulation for pipes and ductwork. Melamine foam is also used as soundproof for studios and auditoriums. Melamine foam isn’t 100% fire proof, but has a very low smoke and fire properties, thus making it a non-hazardous material. I chose this topic as I have small children who like to use my walls as their canvas. They like to use crayons, pens, pencils mostly for their work. If their art work is of something that they were really proud of, I will take a picture of their work with them standing next to it so we can reflect back on that moment. However, if it’s just scribble, well, then this is where the magic eraser comes in handy. I can wipe the wall clean and one could never tell that my small children performed any kind of art work on the wall. With that, the first resource I chose on the magic eraser and the material melamine foam that its made of was from of course Wikipedia. I like to use Wikipedia for a quick reference source, however for academics purpose, is unreliable. Anyone can edit the information in Wikipedia without knowing the true facts on a topic, thus making its source unreliable. For my next source, my reliable source, comes from the website AsianGlory, which is a company out of Hong Kong. They are producers of the foam and one can order this product from them. Their site gives detailed facts of the foam from being flame retardant to being an insulation to a......

Investigatory Project - Ice Insulation

...the Requirements in Science and Technology IV A Study on the Feasibility of Identifying an Alternative Insulator for Ice Submitted to: Mrs. Marites N. Caslib (Physics Instructor) Submitted by: Jhann Reinner M. Pagayon February 6, 2012 Abstract Thermal insulation is the reduction of heat transfer between objects in thermal contact or in range of radiative influence. Heat transfer is the transfer of thermal energy between objects of different temperature. Heat flow is an inevitable consequence of contact between objects of different temperature. Heat flows by means of conduction or convection. Thermal insulation provides a means to maintain a gradient of temperature, by providing a region of insulation in which heat flow is reduced or thermal radiation is reflected rather than absorbed. This study is aimed upon identifying the best alternative insulator that can be used in ice plants and in everyday living. Some materials are better insulators than others, so the researcher used five different materials in conducting the insulation test and these were grocery bag, dry leaves, egg carton, feathers, and sand. The duration of time for each ice cube to melt was recorded to identify the best insulator from commonly found materials at home. Plastics used in ice plants were compared to other insulating materials in this study. Aside from the time consumed in melting ice......
