For centuries China has stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences. On the other hand, over the last decade it has plummeted economically. A big factor for this massive downfall is the population of the country. China is overpopulated, at the dawn of this century there were some 426 million people living in China. Today the population is about 1.2 billion. About two-thirds of this 900 million-person increase was added within the last 50 years. In essence, the Mainland China alone contributes to at least twenty percent of the world's contribution. (Ogilvy 2000:97) The Chinese government realized that something had to be done or they would never be able to prosper as a country. Not at the rate they were heading, that's for sure. They decided to set up a plan to reduce the population growth. They called it China's one-child policy. This policy limits a Chinese couple to bearing only one child. (Milwertz 1997:56) Initially, the Chinese government adopted the policy in order to reduce the severe famine that plagued the country. They realized later that it would also help them prosper economically since the overpopulation held them back. The one child policy, although not formally written into law consisted of three main points. Advocating delayed marriage and delayed child bearing, advocating fewer and healthier births, and advocating one child per couple. (Wang 1995:34) Immediately after the policy was enforced, infanticide was introduced. How could a couple murder their child just because it was a female? Gender played a huge role in the Chinese culture. Males were definitely the dominant sex and a family without a male child was looked down at.
The Chinese tradition implied that there must be a boy among the children in order to continue the family. They felt that the males carried the name of their ancestors and they…...

Stuff I Do for Fun

...To be honest I don't really know what to say. I'm just writing this essay to become a member of this website. But if I need to write an essay then so be it. People do different things for fun, and so do I. I may not be too different but the things I like aren't in the same taste as everyone else. For one thing, I enjoy video games a little too much. Believe it or not I can play video games literally all day long. I've been grounded for obsessive gameplay. But that's something I love to do for fun. And again, not everybody is the same, not everyone is not like me. Games I like to play are mostly action; fast paced action. But I also enjoy the good old adventure game or role playing game. With action games it's usually the typical ones like Call of Duty and Darksiders 2. But a good game I will never get tired of is The Legend of Zelda. Another thing I do for fun is read. This is usually a back up for my playing video games. When I say that I mean if I am grounded or nowhere near any video games, I enjoy my time with a good book. I'm a guy and most people find this feminine but I enjoy reading a good romantic novel every once in awhile, but I usually go for science fiction or fantasy fiction. But for me the book always has to have a little bit of drama in it or else I can't read it. Novel series that I read and really enjoyed would be The Vampire Diaries, Harry Potter, and Eragon. One thing that I prefer to do over everything else is to......

Fun in the Sun

...Fun in the Sun? Being in the sun can cause skin cancer. Then why do we keep sunbathing, when it is dangerous? That is a really good question! We humans love a good tan, it makes us stand out a little, and look different from the others. It also means that you have done something different than lying at home on a couch. You have been outside and maybe did some activities. When you think you look a little better, you get satisfaction and more confidence, and everybody loves that. All these things sound great! So why aren’t we all doing it? Well, then there is also all the cons. And the cons are bad. Really bad. So bad that it kills many people every year. It can give Sunburns, skin damage, eye damages, cancer, etc. And in worst cases that can lead to death, and that happens. Then it’s very important that you remember to use sunscreen. If you don’t remember sunscreen your skin can be harmed, and you can get cancer, and cancer is lethal. Sun screen has a huge impact on how your skin tolerates the sun’s rays, due to its neutralization of UVA rays and UVB rays. UVA rays is what makes us look older, they make wrinkles. UVB rays is what cause sunburns. But not getting any of the UVA or UVB rays is inevitable, it’s only when you are getting too many it is dangerous. I personally love being outside and enjoying the sun. I can lay back and enjoy life, with an ice cold coke. But of course I TRY to remember the sunscreen, without that I would get a bad sunburn, and that has......

Fun at Work

...Organizational Behavior Introduction The American Heritage Dictionary defines fun as “a source of enjoyment, amusement or pleasure”. Imagine working for a company for more than 40 hours a week with a team of introverts. This may sound great to individuals who may have found refuge in isolation, but it comes at a cost for the company. Hodge-Cronin & Associates conducted survey of 737 CEO’s. The survey revealed that 98% of this group “preferred job candidates with a sense of humor to those without” (Rau-Foster, 2000). Can fun really make that much of a difference? Can fun make a company rank #1 for best company to work for? Dr. David Abramis has been researching and studying the topic for years now. “He’s discovered that people who have fun on the job are more creative, more productive, better decision-makers and get along better with co-workers. They also have fewer absentee, late, and sick days than people who aren’t having fun” (Rau-Foster, 2000). Explanation CNN Money has ranked Google as #1 for the “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 2013. Why is this? In 2006, Genentech a company that makes medicine that fights cancer, was ranked #1. Employee’s working for Genentech stated, “What’s better than being a valued member of a cancer-fighting team? Having a great time while you’re at work” (CNN Money, 2006). This company had a 5 percent turnover rate and 20 percent job growth. Now remember the year 2006! Google was on the bottom of this list in 2007. This leaves...

Unexpected Fun

...Unexpected fun It was the summer of two-thousand and six, the best week of that year. Summer school would be out soon, I was looking forward to it since the beginning of the school year. My girlfriends and I had so many adventures planned for the summer; missing one would be like a mission on grand theft auto left uncompleted. One day, I arrive home from summer school angry at the world since my mom forgot about me at the bus stop. When I get home, I over hear her talking on the phone saying, “oh yes go ahead and reserve Dennis a plane ticket too.” Like if I was not angry enough, she decides for me that I am going on vacations to Mexico with my aunt and my cousins, for a whole month! I still remember how mad I was. I kept telling her “well mother your spending money on a plane ticket for nothing, because I’m not going.” Finally, they convinced me to go to Mexico with the promise that if I absolutely hated it, they would buy my plane ticket to return home. The first week there I couldn’t take it, it was the middle of summer and it was raining. We had nothing to do, all we did was sit in the room where we would sleep and look at each other. I decide that the next day I was going to call my parents. I bought a pre-paid card and I did just that. “Mom, I hate it here. You told me to try it out and I did.” Since they had promised me a plane ticket back home, I was convinced that soon I would be back in lovely California. Finally, it stopped raining and later that night......

Team Fun

...Case Application 2: TEAM FUN! Kenny and Norton own TEAM FUN!, a medium-sized company that manufactures and sells sporting goods and equipment. They are watching a CROSSKATES video about cross-country roller skates in the LOUNGE. Norton says, “I don’t know. This stuff looks dangerous! What do you think? Remember that bungee-jumping thing we tried?” Kenny responds, “Edna was out a long time with that knee problem. She sure is a good sport. Keith said we were lucky not to get sued for that. Do you think employees could sue us if they are hurt on product-test assignments?” “Let’s ask Tony,” Norton suggests. “That guy you hired as— what did you call him—director of human resources?” Kenny smiles broadly, “Yep. He sure seems to be busy. He’s pulled together all that paperwork for insurance and retirement that Edna used to handle and named her compensation and benefits manager.” “He wants to send Joe and Eric to a supervisor’s school for work scheduling, job team assignments, and project management,” Norton adds. “He started those picnics by the LAGOON for people to talk about work conditions and issues.” Kenny asks, “Do you think we should let him hire a full-time secretary? I thought Edna could do that, but Tony said she has a full plate. Did you tell him to do that employee bulletin board he tacked into the Web site?” Norton shakes his head no. “Me neither,” Kenny muses. “Wonder why he did that? Guess we’d better talk to him.” Questions: 1. Which of the......

Funny Boy

...Shyam Selvadurairs Funny Boy Analysis English Literature Essay Identity involves recognition of the self. It is not static, but it constantly changes in relation to political, cultural and social events that are occurring. A child's identity is negotiable. Children are presumed innocent and naïve until they have experienced life. Their sense of identity has not been determined if they have not had experiences in which they are able to determine their relationship to and how it affects them. In narrating or privileging a child's perspective in a novel, the language the reader is presented with is simplistic and the viewpoint of the narrator is often minimalistic as it is based upon the experiences which the narrator has encountered. Shyam Selvadurair's Funny Boy is narrated from an adolescent’s perspective, where the presumed innocence and naivety of the child offers an alternative view to the political, cultural, social and historical tensions in India and Sri Lanka and the effect that it has on the developing child in terms of identity. The child narrator in each text is an outsider as they do not merge with the cultural norms imposed upon by society. Arjie, the product of an upper-class Tamil family in Funny Boy, crosses borders in his awakening as a homosexual, falling in love with a Sinhalese, despite his parents attempt to create a masculine identity for him, in order that he may abide by the boundaries and social order that has been imposed upon him. The need to......

Life Is Funny

...Justin Merriweather September 25, 2013 Reader Response Journal Life is Funny by E.R Frank 1. There were parts of the book that made me laugh, sad, and have much sympathy for the characters. One encounter is when PPPPPP parents were fighting and PPPPPP dad would beat on his mother. She didn’t any one to know that her husband was beating her. PPPPPP is always around when she is getting beaten by his dad. He tells his dad to stop, but he doesn’t listen until PPPPP calls the police one day to get rid of his dad. Another incident is when QQQQQ is raped by her dad as a little girl. On weekends she would go over her dads and she would come home crying and sick, because of what he did to her. Her mother never really listened to her, instead she was to busy counting her marbles and working, so her older sister had to tend to her needs and watch over her when she could, and keep up with chores. QQQQQQQ ends up getting pregant at 16 and WWWWW, her sister who is in college, tries to help take care of her along with QQQ new boyfriend, EEEEEE. One more time was with a young Indian girl who had trouble following the rules of her religion. She had made friends with the next door neighbor, GGGGG, who was 22221 years old and she being 33333. Funny Face by Rozanna Lilley

...Funny Face by Rozanna Lilley – Poem Analysis Title: At first the title “Funny Face”, gives us the impression of a poem full of fun and humour. But after reading the poem, we get a totally different way of seeing the titel. We get a sens of the funny face being something the girls of the pageant put on to satisfying the judgeses and the mothers. It is the only way these young girls can stand to do the pageants for the sake of their mothers. Settings: Funny face mainly takes place in a place called Garden City, I think that Garden City is what they call a special place in their backyard, since it is called ‘Garden’ City, it a place where they come to have fun. It is what would be considered the perfect place to be, since everyone seem very happy, for instance “She said I was beautiful and my mother, laughing, agreed” they really seem to be having a great time in Garden City. The poem switches between several places, but the main story takes place in Garden City. They go from being in Garden city to a stage where the girl has to perform and put on her funny face. Narration: The poem is written with a first person narrator. The writer is a young girl who is being forced to enter this Beauty pageant. It is propebly the mother of the child who is making her go. She do not really want to go to these pageant and she does not like being there. The girl finds it very shallow and fake in some sort of way. Form and structure: In the poem there is five verses, the verses......

Writing for Fun

...Research Writing can be Fun Remember the last time your teacher asked you to write a research paper on a subject of your choosing? You probably groaned and grimaced, wiped your sweaty brow, and gasped. Relax. Take a deep breath. This paper will show you how writing for a research paper assignment can not only be done easily, but be fun! Fun you say? How? First, pick a topic that you know something about. Do you like looking for sea shells when vacationing on the beach with your family? Skateboarding at the local park? Playing video games with your friends? Baking with your mom? Making money shoveling snow for your neighbors? Playing soccer or hockey with your team? Reading books? Riding your bicycle? I think by now you get the idea – choose something that you already know a little something about and enjoy. The next steps is to research that topic. So let’s take the example of collecting sea shells on the beach when vacationing with your family. You can approach the research from several angles. You can research the specific types of shells that are located in a specific region. You can research the area where you found the shells. So let’s say that you found a conch shell on the beach in the Bahamas. You can start researching conch shells. The first step to research is one you already know about “Google”. Type Conch Shell in the google search engine and here are just three of the many......

Fun Home

... Alison Bechdel's Fun Home, appropriately sub-titled 'A Family Tragicomic', is a graphic novel style autobiography that revolves around the story of her complicated relationship with her father, and the realization of her own homosexuality. It is complex, intelligent and insightful. The story develops through the interweaving of Bechdel's memories of her childhood and the realizations she is able to make in hindsight. Bechdel challenges the concepts of gender roles, sexual orientation, and most importantly fatherhood through her own stories so that they may take on a deeper meaning in the end. Ultimately the question she aims to answer is: why am I am who I am? Secondary to this inquiry are related questions: how does a closeted gay father affect his daughter’s future homosexuality?  Growing up, Bechdel and her father both struggled with gender roles. Bechdel's refusal to grow her hair long and her reluctance to wear dresses, skirts, or jewelry were the opposite of her father's preference for the effeminate; gardening, decorating, wearing fine creams and colognes. On page 96 the author reveals that her older cousins called her “Butch”, a nickname that reflected her success at acting masculine. To her ‘Butch” was the “opposite of sissy… it was clear to me that my father was a big sissy” (page 97). As a child Bechdel was acutely aware of the breech in conventional gender roles that occurred between her and her father and she resented it, even stating on page 96 that......

George Bush Fun Facts

...However, he did have his moments on the positive side as well. Whatever you think about George Bush, here are some fun, true stories of our former Commander-In-Chief. As I said, George Bush was known for saying some hilarious things to less-than-amused heads of state. His most famous foreign banter-buddy was Vladimir Putin. The first time he met the intrepid leader, he claimed to "see his soul." It went downhill from there. Bush nicknamed the Russian leader "Pootie-Put." Putin wasn't the only victim of questionable nicknames. Bush was famous for his affinity for giving people silly aliases. The former Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chretien, received the unfortunate nickname of "Dinosaur." Dick Cheney, his Vice President, earned the nickname "Big Time," his adviser to the Environment became "Tree Man," and John Boehner became "Boner." The list is too long to continue. Speaking of Bush's knack for stupid nicknames, he often made headlines for the pearls of wisdom he would offer to the media. On January 11th, 2000, he made the famous statement, "Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?" In 2004, he didn't see the cringe-worthy irony of his statement, "I'm honored to shake the hand of a brave Iraqi citizen who had his hand cut off by Saddam Hussein." His best ever, though, has to be his line from 2000: "They misunderestimated me." Bush had his funny moments, even kind of sad when you think about how he was the leader of the Free World. But he did......
