#7 Function and general structure of the organelles or their component. a. -Nuclear membrane: double membrane each composed of lipid bi-layer; Pores in the envelope and outer membranes are continuous.
-Nucleus: contains most of DNA in eukaryotic cells
-Nucleolus: site of ribosomal RNA production & assembly of Ribosome components
-Chromatin: mix of proteins and DNA that condense and form into chromosomes before division.
b. Ribosomes: particles made of ribosomal RNA & proteins; carry out protein synthesis in the cytosol (free ribosomes) and carry out protein synthesis on the outside of ER or the nuclear envelope (bound ribosomes)
c. Smooth and Rough ER: endomembrane system regulates protein traffic & performs metabolic functions in cell; Components of the eR system: nuclear membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, Lysosomes, vacuoles, plasma membrane(components are either continuous or connect via transfer by vesicles) -ER membrane: continuous with the nuclear envelope; 2 types of ER: smooth ER: lacks ribosomes, rough ER: ribosomes studding its surface -smooth ER: synthesis lipids, metabolize carbs, store calcium, detoxifies poison. -rough ER: has bound ribosome, produce proteins & membranes (distributed by transport vesicles insulin from pancreas), membrane factory for cell; synthesis & packaging of protein, made proteins and transport within membrane- enclosed vesicles to the Golgi body.
d. Golgi apparatus: - flattened membranous sacs -FUNCTIONS: modifies products of ER (ex. Add sugars on the glycoprotein created by ER), manufactures certain macromolecules, sorts and packages materials into transport vesicles specifies location.
f. LYSOSOMES: -membranous sac of hydrolytic enzymes -FUNCTION: hydrolyze proteins, fats, polysaccharides, nucleic acids; uses enzymes to recycle organelles & macromolecules…...

The Phantom Canyon Preserve is among the greatest Front Range Landscapes totaling about 1,700 acres including six miles of the North Fork of the Cache La Poudre River. The Phantom Canyon Preserve is one of the last remaining canyons without a road among the Colorado’s Front Range. This preserve is home to hundreds of species of wildlife including species of special concern and hundreds of plant species. The Nature Conservancy protects the Phantom Canyon Preserve since 1987. The main reason this preserve is protected is the ecosystem supports the Larimer Aletes which is a rare member of the parsley family. This particular plant is hard to find and can only be found in Larimer and Boulder counties with its highest concentration in the Phantom Canyon Preserve. Some other native plant species that can be found in this ecosystem are Bells Twin Pod, Needle-and-Thread Grass, and One-sided Penstemon. The Phantom Canyon Preserve serves as a habitat for species of special concern such as the Black Bear, Mountain Lion, and the Bobcat. The children’s pool, La Jolla shores, and La Jolla cove make up this mile long crescent of a prime sandy beach. The children’s pool is a small cove protected by a concrete wall originally built to make a safe swimming area for children. Now the area has turned into a place for seals and sea lions to beach themselves and their babies. La Jolla shores is a place for beachgoers of all interests. You will find this as a busy swimming and surfing area. During the day it is used as a launching pad for scuba diving and kayaking. At night it’s alive with the glowing of beach fires and socializing of people. Last is La Jolla cove, where cliffs have formed a small deep water bay. Here you can enjoy activities like kayaking through caves and snorkeling seeing the marine life, like Garibaldi fish. Many types of marine life can be found in the La Jolla shores water. On the floors of this ecosystem you can find crustaceans, mollusks, and invertebrates. While snorkeling you can find animals such as fish, rays, and sharks. Green sea turtles are one reptile that calls La Jolla shores home. The most common land animals are birds. Firstly the Trachea which is your wind pipe has the structure of a long tube with strong C-rings of cartilage running down it, the reason of this is so that when you are laying down or moving organs such as your lungs don’t put pressure on your trachea as this would block the air flowing through this structure allows the function of the trachea to remain open at all times allowing us to breathe. The trachea along with the bronchi are all lined with ciliated cells, these cells have hair like structure which all rhythmically move in a sweeping motion. This is then supported by Goblet cells which produce Mucus so that dirt, bacteria and dust can stick to it, this then is supported by the ciliated cells which sweeps the mucus up the trachea to the epiglottis to be swallowed into the stomach and the pathogens then killed in the stomach or to be coughed out. This structure allows the function of disposing of bacteria and foreign pathogens as well as dirt so that it can be removed from our body. It’s important in the respiratory system that the structure allows efficient gas exchange. An example of this is brain cells which need a large amount of energy in order to communicate with other parts of the body that may be further away. Every cell in the body has approximately 1000 of mitochondria and each one has a double layered membrane which is similar to the cell membrane but has several folds which produces a series of “shelves” which are called cristae. Endoplasmic reticulum(ER): There are two types of ER which are called rough and smooth. Endo translates to “within” and reticulum is a term for network, therefore ER is a branching network inside of a cell. Both the smooth and rough ER have the same types of membranes but they both have different shapes and functions. Rough ER has ribosomes attached (black bodies) and its function is manufacturing cell proteins and is a storage area. Sensory nerves are the group of nerves responsible for gathering information from the body, and passing it along to the spinal cord which sends that message to the brain. The brain will then combine the message, and produce a response. The spinal cord acts as a superhighway of messages. It’s made up of a collection of nerves that go up and down the spine sending messages back and forth to the brain. The brain is composed of three sections: the hindbrain, the midbrain, and the forebrain. The hindbrain includes the cerebellum, the ponds, and the medulla. The midbrain includes the tegmentum and the tectum. Lastly, the forebrain includes the cerebrum, the thalamus, and the hypothalamus.
