Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals. A good manager does this both efficiently and effectively. This means that not only does the manager get the tasks done, but he or she also does it in a timely manner, controls costs and use its people and materials wisely. There are four types of management functions: Planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
Planning is the management function of systematically making decisions about the goals and activities that an individual, a group, a work unit, or the overall organization will pursue. Planning is specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals. Planning includes analyzing current situations, anticipating the future, determining objectives, deciding in what types of activities the company will engage, choosing corporate and business strategies and determining the resources needed to achieve be organizational goals.
In my organization, in my position, a lot of time goes into planning. We have to plan for quarterly board of director’s meetings, bi-annual strategic planning meetings, annual business planning meetings and monthly management meeting and financial reviews. One of the main aspects of my job is planning all of these meeting and making sure they are executed effectively, efficiently and at the lowest possible cost.
Organizing is the management function of assembling and coordinating human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals. Organizing activities include attracting people to the organization, specifying job responsibilities, grouping jobs into work units, marshaling and allocating resources, and creating conditions so that people and things work together to achieve maximum success. Effective managers build organizations that are flexible and…...

Operations Function and Other Function

...1. Introduction An organization’s operations function is concerned with getting things done i.e. producing goods and/or services for customers. Effectively, the main objective of the operations function is to produce those goods and services required by customers whilst managing resources as efficiently as possible. 2. RELATINSHIP WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONAL FUNCTIONS The operations function lies at the heart of any organization and interacts with all the other functions. Although the various organizational functions involve different activities, they must interact to achieve the goals of the organization. This therefore implies that Operation Management decisions are not made in isolation. Rather, each decision is intertwined with other organizational functions following the strategic direction developed at the top level of the organization. In a nutshell, many of the decisions made by operations managers are dependent on information from the other functions. At the same time, other functions cannot be carried out properly without information from operations as detailed below: 1. Finance: The finance function ties all departments together with monetary measurements that tell whether the company is making money. They also regulate the acquisition of funds to keep the business operations going, and investing money received wisely. Finance managers need to work closely with the operations function to be able to determine the need for capital......

Functions of Management

...Functions of Management Nicole Perez July 30, 2012 MGT/330 Richard Amabile In an organization a manager should set goals and ensure that the employees can accomplish the goals that were set for them. The four functions that managers use to make sure that their employees reach the organizational goal are planning, organizing, leading and controlling. These functions have proved to be valuable in a work place setting to achieve the goals that have been set. Planning is one of the functions of management. It can be the most important of the four functions. Planning is a key part of managers’ job roles. If planning is not done well it will affect the other functions. When planning, managers should have a second course of action to achieve the goals just in case their first plan does not work out. Each plan that the organization makes has an impact on the organizations work. Managers should evaluate their plans to see if they are successful and if a plan is not as effective as they planned they would need to make changes to it. Planning is set in place to help the organization reach long term or even short term goals. The second function of management is organizing. According to (Bateman, T. S., & Snell, S.A.) organizing is assembling and coordinating the human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals. Organizing would include doing activities such as, catch the attention of people and bring their attention to the......

Roles and Functions

...Roles and Functions Latonya Jackson HCS/ 325 September 2, 2013 Michelle Crumby Introduction Healthcare managers play a vital role in the day to day operations in a healthcare facility or environment. The functions that healthcare managers must possess in order to be successful in maintaining the vision of the organization are planning, leading, controlling and organizing. Healthcare is constantly growing and it is important for there to be good managers who can plan ahead, delegate job responsibilities, and organize the staff to complete their tasks accurately and effectively. Four Major Functions in Management One of the four major functions in management is planning. When planning a manager must first think about the goals and vision of the organization and how to best take the necessary steps to accomplish all goals. Planning allows managers to make good decisions as well as helping them keep track of their department’s progress toward the perception of their organization. Another major function in management is leading. According to Lombardi, Schermerhorn and Kramer (2007), “Leading is the process of arousing people’s enthusiasm to work hard to fulfill plans and accomplish objectives. Through leading, managers build commitments, encourage activities that support goals, and influence others to do their best work on the organization’s behalf”. In my opinion managers have to be good leaders as well; in order to effectively assist their staff in performing their...

The Functions of Management

...The Four Functions of Management MGT/330 05/02/2010 The Four Functions of Management Despite the changes required in managing a business in today’s economy and with major technological advances, management has four functions that will not change. The four functions are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These functions are vital to the success of any organization and, as a manager, they are vital to me in my organization as well. The first function of management is planning. Planning is deciding what goals your company wants to achieve and what actions you can take to accomplish those goals in the future. This first step is vital because it without a plan for your organizations future, there will be no future. In my organization, we have a strategic planning committee, which I am a member of, that works together to lead our company into the future. All members and employees are committed to our mission statement and the excellence of our products. We not only look at how we can grow our organization, but how we can do it without harming our environment and being a good community partner. We also look ahead to future expansions or even possible catastrophes and how we would manage the business if that happened. Planning for your company’s future and identifying resources that will allow you to accomplish your goals is a crucial part of managing any business. The next function is organizing. Organization is the process of appointing individuals to......

Functions of Management

...Functions of Management MGT/330 Functions of Management In 1916 a book entitled "Administration Industrielle et Generale" was published that set forth five management functions. The author was a French coal mine director named Henri Fayol. Fayol insisted these five distinct functions of managing were applicable in any industry. In the 1950’s, management textbooks of the time began to write some of his ideas into their content. Today's textbooks have condensed them to four: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Staffing was originally included as the fifth step (Norman, 2014). The first function is planning, which will determine the direction a company is going to go in. In the world of business there are many adverse factors that can influence these management functions. Future goals, the steps to achieve these goals, future business and economic conditions, the allocation of resources and reducing waste are all factors to be considered during the planning stage. During the planning stage, managers must formulate objectives to be reached by certain company deadlines and decide on which steps will best get them there. Managers must also re-evaluate their plans under changing conditions and make adjustments when necessary. Next would be the organizing function, where it is important that managers identify activities to be accomplished. By bringing together physical, human and financial resources, managers are able to achieve the company’s......

The function is shaped like a parabola. This parabola opens down. The x-axis interception point of -3x2 :( 0, 0) and the y-axis interception of -3x2 (0,0). The domain is all real number, which can be written in standard notation as D= (-∞, ∞) and R= (-∞, 0). When I plot the parabola I notice it has a vertex of (0,0). From the above I can truly this relation and is also a function as every element of the domain has one and only once value associated with it in the range and passes through the vertical line test. Image below represents my function h(x) =-3x2. My second problem comes from page 711 #34.The problem states h(x) =-√x-1 h(x) =-√1-1=0 h(x) =-√2-1=-1 h(x) =-√3-1=-1.41 x | h(x) =-√x-1 | 1 | 0 | 2 | -1 | 3 | -1.41 | From the results, when I plot my graph it resembles half of a parabola, which opens to the left with a line which falls below the x-axis, except my starting point (1,0). This is functionsy=-x-1. The function has a range [0, -∞) because the line starts at and includes the x-axis, then it continues going down forever. The domain (left/right) would be [1, ∞)...

Network Managmenet Guide

...Information Network) is a collaboration of 24 hospitals that are self-sufficient and do not belong to an existing health network. These hospitals are broken into different districts with those being a northern, central and southern district. These individual hospitals are of different size and do not have any satellite locations that will be part of the new network. As a result of the hospitals being different in size it’s anticipated that the network will have approximately 100,000 individuals accessing the system at any one time. Key personnel will also have remote capability and it’s figured that this will number about 200 individuals. Network Description As stated the network is divided into three different districts which are more of a function of management rather than network connectivity. All three districts will connect to a main network center server that is located in a neutral location and is purchased by the network. All of the patient information will be stored at this network center server and will be accessible to any of the hospitals that are part of the network. Each hospital will be responsible for their own LAN implementation and it’s suggested that they follow a star topography in their layout. The Northern District is comprised of 4 hospitals. The hospitals within this district are all between 100-200 beds which make these relatively small locations will not have many personnel that will be accessing the system. Each hospital in this district will......

Exponential Functions

...4-1 Exponential Functions 1. What is the definition of an exponential function? Page 412 An exponential function f with base b is defined by f(x) = bx or y = bx, where b is a positive constant other than 1 (b > 0 and b is not equal to 1) and x is any real number. Example: g(x) = 10^x 2. What is the inverse of an exponential function? Page No horizontal line can be drawn that intersects the graph of an exponential function at more than one point. This means that the exponential function is one-to-one and has an inverse. Example: fx = b(x) Steps for solving problem: Replace: fx with y: y = b(x) Interchange x and y: x=b(y) Solve for y 3. What are the characteristics of an exponential function? Page 415 * The domain of f(x) = b^x consists of all real numbers. The range of F(x) = b^x consists of all positive real numbers (0, to infinity). * The graphs of all exponential functions of the form f(x) = b^x pass Through the point (0, 1) because f(0) = b^0 =1 (b not equal to 0) the y intercept is 1. There is no x intercept. * If b > 1, f(x) – b^x has a graph that goes up to the right and is an increasing function. The greater the value of b, the steeper the increase. * If 0 < b < 1, f (x) = b^x has a graph that goes down to the right and is a decreasing function. The smaller the value of b, the steeper the decrease. * F(x) = b^x is......

Functions of Management

...Functions of Management The success of a business greatly depends on the quality of the management within an organization. Management is an integral part to any business and organization. Management is the act of getting individuals to work together to achieve common goals or objectives. Management consists of four primary functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. In this paper, I will discuss each function while providing an explanation of how each function relates to the organization for which I am employed by. Currently, I am working as a hairstylist for a large and well known hair salon chain retailer. I have been in the cosmetology industry for over five years and have worked for this particular salon for a year. This hair salon chain retailer has stores all across the country and the majority of which are franchised. As part of the franchise there are some guidelines and expectations every salon is required to uphold and maintain, but there is also some discretion franchisees and managers can use in the running and operation of their salons. The franchise owners that I work for have acquired over twenty salons in the last five years and continue to grow the number of salons they own each year. With every salon that they purchase they are responsible for staffing and employing more hairstylists and managers. The first function of management I will discuss is planning. Management uses planning to deliver strategic value (Bateman & Snell,...

Functions of Management

...Functions of Management Ben Enuma MGT/330 September 5, 2011 Brenda Shore Management Functions Management has been described as “the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals”. (Bateman, T. S., & Snell, S. A., 2009). The functions of management comprise of four primary functions, namely; planning, organizing, leading and controlling. For the success of an organization these functions must be performed both effectively and efficiently. All over the world these functions are common across all fields of management, be it at a factory, a super market, a restaurant or even at home. In my place of work for instance, these functions are referred to as the management process and they are applied in our everyday activities. Planning Planning is the first and base component of management. It involves chalking out future course of action and deciding in advance what course of action is most appropriate for the achievement of pre-determined goals. According to KOONTZ, “Planning is deciding in advance – what to d, when to and how to do. It bridges the gap between where we are and where we want to be.”This function is usually performed by top executives of companies. Since planning involves deciding and specifying which organizational goals to be pursued, it is seen as the most critical aspect of management. To a large extent the success or failure of the company depends on its planning. Planning describes a top-down approach in......

Function

...Running head: FUNCTION Functions of Management MGT/330 Functions of Management Successful businesses have a few things in common. Good management. A manager that understands how to do their job and can properly execute it is very valuable. Most managers have a method that they follow so they can keep the business flowing. The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Using these functions to run a business is effective and makes the business run more efficient. Any good management training will stress the need for these functions to be in effect at all times. Swift Income Tax uses all four functions even though there is a small group of employees. Planning is the first function a manger does in business. Planning consists of goal setting, review of the mission statement and ways to complete the goals in a timely manner. Checking if the goals have been met is the important part of the planning function. The organization review’s the mission statement once every six months; this helps stay on track with where the company wants to go. Goals are set to grow 20% every year (Thomas S. Bateman, Scott A. Snell, 2009). To make sure the company grows 20 % every year they look at customer service surveys and make a certain amount of cold calls to attract new business. Every quarter the company check its numbers and is able to......
