This essay is aimed towards determining whether a relationship between cultural diversity and globalization is present or not, and if globalization does indeed pose a threat to cultural diversity.
“The negative side to globalization is that it wipes out entire economic systems and in doing so wipes out the accompanying culture.” Peter L. Berger (American sociologist)
Globalization is broken down into different categories, these being cultural, economical, political and technological globalization. It is due this process that barriers are broken down and interaction occurs between individuals of different races, nationalities and cultural back grounds. It is a movement towards an integrated global economy characterized by the free exchange of goods and capital. In popular discourse, Globalization is often related to the Internet revolution, free-market economies and the predominantly western political, economic and cultural lifestyle. This movement is supported by a large range of modern technologies. It is because of globalization that society believes that wealth and higher standards of living will strike developing nations.
The above statement was supported by authors of the book, the effect of globalization on African countries: an over view of Nigeria. The two authors (C. R. Eze and J Nkwede) firmly believe that globalization is a strong enforcer of development and poverty reduction in Africa. Plenty agree with Eze and Nkwede as they have deemed the process as a positive one, but from a negative perspective, globalization also results in the development of negative situations that lead to changes in societal lifestyles. A major example of the situations mentioned above is that, globalization is growing at a rate that is beyond people’s control. ...The United States has been a place for opportunity, wealth, and freedom since its European discovery in the fifteenth century. Since then, diversity within the nation has changed, evolved, and expanded into something truly unique and beyond stereotype. However, as much as our nation is known for its diversity, it is also known for opposition to diversity. While the most noticeable racial and cultural exploitation has occurred through African-Americans, many groups have faced turmoil as a result of the color of the skin, the clothes they wear, the gods they pray to, or the sound of their voice. Native Americans were naturally the first group to face aggression from European settlers. Many travelers from the Old World to the New had a coveted passion for their Protestant or Catholic beliefs, and made it brutally clear to the Natives that this Christian God wanted all to believe in only Him. As a result of the Natives desiring to pursue their own spiritual beliefs, the English and Spanish alike grew hostile toward these “savages.” Tension continued to grow until well after the birth of the United States, until President Andrew Jackson issued the Indian Removal Act in 1830, where Native American families were forced out of their rightful homes across the Southeast and forced to relocate their lives in reservations around Oklahoma. Secondary dimensions include factors such as family status, first language and religion among others. The media has a strong role in promoting diversity and creating prejudices and stereotypes. In school I was taught that Blacks were separated from Whites in the south, but I did not realize this was until 1964. That is not that long ago. Living in California I do not see racial separation still today, but in a visit to South Carolina you can see the separation still exists. I guess I had assumed that segregation ended soon after the freeing of slaves. In 1964 that would have been part of my Mom’s generation and this is not something that she had ever mentioned, but she did not grow up in the south. I do believe many people make assumptions of other people and that is part of the problem we have with the issues with prejudice and stereotyping races. I feel if I traveled to South Carolina again I would have greater empathy for the Black Americans from that area. Before I could see that the Black American’s were different from the Black American’s I met here in California but I did not know why. My sister lived in South Carolina for a few years while she was in the Navy and she too noticed the difference in the Black Americans that lived there compared to those she knew in California. Of those 300 million, approximately 98 million, or 33%, of them are a part of a minority group (Jarvis, 2008).
