The Unplugged Challenge
Back to the Stone Age. That is what went through my mind as I prepared to begin the Unplugged Challenge and disconnect from the internet for five days. Several questions crossed my mind before I began. How will I stay connected with people? What if I miss an email naming me the Publishers Clearing House ‘Grand Prize Winner?’ Could I live for nearly a week without the search capability of Google or the hilarious videos of YouTube? It seemed to me that living without the internet was akin to losing an arm. Would I be able to survive without it?
The first morning of the challenge I awoke to a blaring alarm clock. Really, 6am already?! I dragged myself out of bed and grabbed my phone to check the news and weather, like I normally do. Wait, NO!! I quickly reminded myself of the challenge and put down my phone before the browser could open. Wow, I thought, only fifteen minutes into the challenge and I have nearly had a failure. The rest of the first day was a bitter struggle of human willpower vs. technology. Every ten or fifteen minutes I found myself instinctively grabbing my phone and dialing up Facebook or Google. Each and every time I had to consciously remind myself of the challenge. Back away, I told myself, put the phone down, and everything will be alright. Though everything turned out alright, by the end of day one I felt quite frustrated and disconnected. I just wanted to post a Facebook update or send an email to a friend. With four more days of disconnect ahead, I began to question whether or not I would make it.
The morning of day two found me with a newfound resolve and determination. I scolded myself for my poor attitude on day one, and began to formulate a new plan for success. I turned off the Wi-Fi on my phone, and put a yellow sticky note on the front saying “No Internet, No Excuses!” I put a similar note on my laptop at home,…...

Going to War

...Going To War Com/156 Going To War In today’s world there are many wars and rumors of wars. No matter where we turn we are hearing about one conflict or another. Often it make one wonder has there ever been peace in the world. Looking back on history our world has constantly moved from one war to the next. Trying to understand why it is that mankind feels the need to fight one another is not simple to answer. Many reasons have been given as to why war are started everything from religion, expansionism, ethnic cleansing and even in the name of peace itself. No matter what the reason is that people claim to be fighting for when you get down to the basic of it all. In the end people go to war for power and control, even when the purpose or perception to do so suggests otherwise. To better understand the reason wars are started we need first talk about why people go to war. Matthew O. Jackson and Massimo Morelli wrote (when researching for the book “The Handbook on the Political Economy of War.”) a list of the reason why people go to war. They included the following: religion, revenge, ethnic cleansing and other ideological mass killings, asymmetric information, bargaining failures, first strike advantages and preemptive war. (2009, The Reasons for Wars – an Updated Survey). As complete as this list was I found that often the reason for war was not simply one of the above topics. Often those declaring the wars would use multiple reasons as for the need. This......

Going Green

...The Earth is yours. Save it! The Earth is yours. Save it! Name : Sanelisiwe Gomomo Laetitia Ngalula Aviwe Janeth Viwe Introduction What does it mean to Go Green? Going Green means that you have adopted certain practices and habits that reduce your overall impact on the environment. These practices may include anything from recycling, reducing your energy usage, using public transportation, to buying local products. Going green is quite important to the environment as well as our health. We will be able to breathe a little easier with less pollution in the air. Consider for a moment that a plastic soda bottle takes over 450 years to decompose, and that beer cans take 200 to 500 years to decompose. If these things are not recycled, or if a process isn't found to speed up decomposition, then we're going to wind up living in our own landfills. People all around the world consume billions of bottles and cans each and every single year, without a method to get rid of these items, our great grandchildren will still be seeing those same bottles and cans around, that alone is an important reason to go green. The Going Green Campaign is to ensure the earth will be a better place to live in future. I. INFORMATION ABOUT THE SERVICE The Going Green Campaign has been created to raise the awareness on the environment hazards we are facing today. There are many ways we can save our earth and prevent it from being destroyed. Our earth has lost a massive ideal......

Going Green

...Hospitality companies have an ethical responsibility to go green even at the expense of the bottom line Nowadays it has become fashionable for businesses and organizations to adopt and promote environmentally friendly approach. This adaptation not only helps making these organizations noticeable but also is considered to be cost effective. The expectations and pressures of going green have also affected the hospitality industry as customers are rapidly becoming aware of the environmental concerns that the world is facing and expect the organization that they are associated with to adopt such operational and service management scenarios which are environment friendly. It is not easy to present an argument against healthier work space and environment. This essay will analyze different aspects of adopting ‘green activities’ by the hospitality organizations and will discuss if it is possible for them to maintain healthy revenues while adopting green activities. The word green generally refers towards the activities which are considered to be environmentally responsible by the consumers and stake holders, adopted by the organization in question. Such activities are meant to reduce the environmental foot print of the organization by reducing their use of natural resources and a balanced contribution towards the eco systems (Graci & Dodds, 2009).There are variety of ways to choose from when a company decides to ‘go green’ starting from minor activities to bigger more......

Going Vegetarian

...29 April 2013 Going Vegetarian In today’s fast-paced, modern and practical society people are becoming more health conscious. This includes trying to choose the best available options for a beneficial lifestyle. They are becoming more concerned these days about the increasing health risks of a meat-based diet. On the other hand, others have taken a step further and believed that animal cruelty involved in killing animals and using them for their products is inhumane and should be outlawed. Vegetarianism used to be an unusual lifestyle choice. Today it is becoming more common and accepted by mainstream society. While there are many reasons for choosing a vegetarian diet, the most important are health reasons, environmental and economic reasons, and, above all, ethical reasons. Well as my sustainability project, a lifestyle change that is good for me and good for the planet, I decided to go vegetarian for a week meaning no meat, no gelatin, or fish. I knew I wasn’t going to have any trouble with fish because I don’t like seafood but meat, I didn’t know if I could last a whole week. March 11 was the first day I started the experiment and of course I had no trouble at all since it was the first day. I actually felt really good going into this and … It felt like nothing on the second day also and found myself just getting another César salad. From the looks of it, I thought I might actually be able to do this and accomplish my goal by not eating any meat. But I spoke too...

Going Green

...Austin English 102 28 November 2009 Going Green The thought of “going green” has come into question quite often within the last few years. Due to the increase of greenhouse gases and the global climate change, many people feel the need to change our habit of fossil fuel use has come upon us. These changes have come in the form of alternative fueled cars too using solar panels on the roof of homes to generate one’s own electricity from the sun. As with all ideas, there tend to be good ideas and not so good ideas. I believe for the most part we as a people have done a good job of starting the trend of being cleaner and more planet friendly with our actions. Yet I still believe it is going to take a long time before we reach the point where we can consider ourselves a completely environmentally friendly country. There are many good things happening locally in Arizona that are setting us off in the right direction, especially at Glendale Community College. For one, the new buildings at Glendale Community College are being made environmentally friendly by utilizing the sun for power with the help of solar panels. Also another way they are trying to make a difference is in the way people get to and from school. With the addition of carpool parking spots, it has started to encourage more and more people to carpool to school then drive separately. I think that all of these ideas are going to help out, but in the long run stuff like this is going to have to be done on a much......

Going, Going, Gone

...Authoritative Literature: AU Section 341 The Auditor’s Consideration of an Entity’s Ability to Continue as a Going Concern Source: SAS No. 59. This section provides guidance to the auditor in conducting an audit of financial statements in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards with respect to evaluating whether there is substantial doubt about the entity's ability to continue as a going concern. Continuation of an entity as a going concern is assumed in financial reporting in the absence of significant information to the contrary. Ordinarily, information that significantly contradicts the going concern assumption relates to the entity's inability to continue to meet its obligations as they become due without substantial disposition of assets outside the ordinary course of business, restructuring of debt, externally forced revisions of its operations, or similar actions. AU Section 722 Interim Financial Information Source: SAS No. 100; SAS No. 116; SAS No. 121. The purpose of this section is to establish standards and provide guidance on the nature, timing, and extent of the procedures to be performed by an independent accountant when conducting a review of interim financial information. The term interim financial information means financial information or statements covering a period less than a full year or for a 12-month period ending on a date other than the entity's fiscal year end. Unplugged Schools

...technology just as much as the students do, causing not only harm to students but the entire school. Due to the technology advancing rapidly and taking over the students and educators, there needs to be a solution that will fix the problem; so why not unplug schools. Unplugging schools is minimizing or eliminating the usage of all technological devices on a school campus including cell phones, computers, iPod's or mp3 players, and television or game consoles. Unplugged schools are only to benefit and help America's educational system from the problems with personal values, social communication, and community disinvolvement that students have today, as it only worsens as technology advances. The are many problems that come along with the technological use in schools curriculum. One problem for students, by relying on their computers or cell phones, is that their social communication level and skills are below satisfactory. Lowell Monke, a former educator, present writer and philosopher of education said in his essay "Unplugged Schools", "So much daily communication is mediated by machine that the U.S. News &World Report has estimated that youth graduating from school today have had about one-third fewer face-to-face conversations than their parents had when they came out of school" (116). The social communication level of student's now is less than the older generations because the older individuals do not rely on the email or text messaging like the young woman and men......

Not only can green business practices and processes help protect the environment, they may also help a company improve its bottom line. There are many direct benefits for businesses that embrace social and environmental responsibility. There are tangibles and financials that come from efficiency and cost savings: * Increased revenues and market share * Mutual benefits in contract alignments * Reduced risk, easier financing * Reduced expenses of construction sites In addition, today much of the value of a company lies below the bottom line in intangibles, nonfinancial and brand reputation. Mainstream investors are demanding thoughtful corporate social responsibility structures. Leading research in the field of "Extra-Financial" valuation shows that environmental, social and governance issues are material to long term results -- so must be factored into investment decisions. What's Going on?

...What’s Going On? Marvin Gaye skrev en sang i 1971, som hedder “What’s Going On”. Marvin skriver i sangen: “Father, father We don't need to escalate You see, war is not the answer For only love can conquer hate You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today” Hvis vi nu tager udgangspunkt i Rusland og Ukraine konflikten, så er det som Marvin skriver i teksten, så gør Rusland jo lige præcis det, som Marvin skriver man ikke skal. Altså “Vi behøver ikke, at eskalere”, og det er jo det der sker nu. Rusland bliver ved med,......

Religion Unplugged

...Religion Unplugged Craig Clifford December 14, 2011 Religion Unplugged What is religion? What is the purpose of religion? Why is religion rapidly shrinking? In the perspective of a functionalist, religion has historically been linked to identify an individual and their social group. It was once believed that society was integrated and stable years ago due to how many people that congregated together in church because of their religion. For example: you see with some television shows depicting a whole town congregating at church every Sunday, where everyone knows each other, and everyone always pitches in to help one another out when in need. This was believed for one to be a part of the society. Most people in the society had a belief of a god which seemed to pull the society together as a whole. Over the years, several religions have become more relevant identifying your exact beliefs and/or followings by how, who, or which god you chose to worship. Today there are even more religions and more individuals who choose to believe but not follow a particular religion. There are also several individuals who choose to be non-believers. Some may say that the fewer people committing to one true religion and only acknowledging a higher power might lead to a dysfunctional society. Some believe if you believe in a higher power, that will help you make the right choices in life because of how religion portraits what is right and what is wrong. Many are choosing......
