Discussion Questions for Smith vs. Marx (October 8, 2013 pp. 134-165)
An Essay on the Background of Business Ethics: Ethics, Economics, Law and the Corporation 1. What is philosophy?
A conversation. 2. What is "philosophical ethics"?
A conversation about conduct, the doing of good, and the avoiding of evil. 3. What is "business ethics"?
A conversation about right and wrong conduct in the business world. 4. Business ethics was once known as “the world’s most famous oxymoron” until about thirty years ago. What happened to change that view?
Newspaper headlines of foreign bribes, Wall Street scandals, exploding cars, whistleblower conflicts and civil rights in the workplace allowed the view that value questions are never absent from business decisions to come into play and that moral responsibility is the first requirement of a manager in any business. From then on, it has become the general consensus that a thorough grounding in ethical reasoning is essential preparation for a career in business. 5. How was the “ruling class” defined in the seventeenth century according to Karl Marx?
The ruling class in every age is the group that owns the means of production of the age’s product. In the 17th century, the product was almost exclusively agricultural and the means of production was almost exclusively agricultural land; landowners were the aristocrats and rulers. With the coming of commerce and industry, the owners of the factories joined the ruling class and eventually dominated it. 6. What did Karl Marx mean by the disillusionment of the workers?
“There will come a point when they will suddenly ask, why should we accept oppression over our lives? And the search for answers to this question will show them the history of their situation, expose the falsehood of the ideology and the false consciousness of those who believe it, show them…...

North Korea and South Korea

...After the war between North Korea and South Korea the North stayed communist but the South went back to its natural state meaning that it was not communist. -- Well, North Korea and South Korea went to war in the late 40's or early 50's (before then, Korea was one whole country.). The economy and government are very different between the two countries. South Korea is a perfectly good country. They have cell phones and cars and internet and they're a democracy (things you probably take for granted if you live in the US or Canada or South Korea or pretty much any other free country). But in North Korea things are different. Kim Jong ll rules over North Korea. In North Korea, people are pretty much brainwashed from a young age that the ruler of the country is always right, no matter what, and there's nothing you can do about that. North Korea doesn't have internet, and even though there's a few buses there, there's no such thing as a traffic jam there. They just started allowing cell phones, only a few people have them. International calls and texts aren't allowed. North Korea is basically a country that's closed off from the rest of the world. It's very difficult to leave the country. You might not be able to leave without a good reason, and if you do get to leave you might not be able to come back. It's pretty hard to travel there too- you can't just hop on a plane and fly there. Of course people do escape from time to time- but most people don't even try, don't even......

Korea

...2013). Indeed, why wouldn’t such a growth trajectory take on a supernatural descriptor? What’s more, in the 1960s few could have predicted such an ascent given that the Republic of Korea (ROK) lacked an abundance of natural resources, land mass or population size – frequently used indicators to forecast power potential (Organski 1968, 340). This has led researchers to question why South Korea was able to grow at such a remarkable pace, while other potential risers were not. For instance, Egypt, with a larger abundance of profitable natural resources, a larger land mass and nearly twice the population size, has had sluggish growth during that same time. Egypt’s GDP (OER) is US $255 billion; its unemployment is 12.5% or 130th in the world; and, its HDI ranking is 112th. Immanuel Wallerstein’s World System Analysis[2] provides a theoretical framework to consider such growth and development inequalities. He argues an essential organizing characteristic of the modern capitalist world economy is the division of labour. Wallerstein argues systemic power structures institutionalize structural divisions in labour and amplify core-periphery relations. This essay will consider the role of strong state machineries[3] for developmental growth in such a system. Through a comparative analysis of Egypt and South Korea, this essay will demonstrate that nationalistic state intervention is necessary for economic development[4]. Wallerstein’s focus is the analysis of the modern world economy,......

Korea

...Korea, called Hanguk (Korean: 한국; Hanja: 韓國) in South Korea and Joseon (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮) in North Korea, is an East Asian territory that is divided into two distinct sovereign states, North Korea (aka, DPRK or Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and South Korea (aka, ROK or Republic of Korea). Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan (East Sea). The adoption of the Chinese writing system ("Hanja" in Korean) in the 2nd century BC and the introduction of Buddhism in the 4th century AD had profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which was first united during the Silla (57 BC – AD 935) under the King Munmu. The united Silla fell to Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms. Goryeo was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongolians in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which was forced to become a tributary state. After the Mongol Empire's collapse, severe political strife followed. The Ming-allied Choseon emerged supreme in 1388. The first 200 years of Choseon were marked by relative peace and saw the creation of the Korean Hangul alphabet by King Sejong the Great in the 14th century and the increasing influence of Confucianism. During the later part of the dynasty, however, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the Western nickname......

Korea

...infrastructure, Seoul is a major corporate and leisure destination in Asia, offering tourists a diverse mix of cultural, entertainment, dining and shopping experiences. International visitor arrivals have been on the rise since 2003. The Korean wave and the government’s initiatives to boost tourism as well as the depreciation of the Won have encouraged visitation to Seoul. In 2012, international visitor arrivals to South Korea was recorded at 11.1 million, above the target of 10 million tourists. In 2013, visitor arrivals edged up to 12.2 million tourists, a 9.3% year-on-year increase, supported by the increasing number of tourists from Mainland China. Japanese visitors decreased dramatically by 21.9% compared to 2012 due to the weakening of the Yen and a strained political relationship. However, Japan and Mainland China still remained as the top two source markets to South Korea in 2013. There has been a significant increase in hotel development in the capital city of Seoul against a backdrop of demand growth and limited room supply in recent years. According to Korea Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (KMCST), approximately 50 new hotel projects have been submitted which could potentially result in an additional 22,200 rooms by 2017. Several international branded full-service and limited-service hotels opened in the past few years and others have intentions to enter the Seoul market by 2015. Hotel trading performance in Seoul recorded year-on-year growth until 2012 but......

Korea Development

...States, South Korea has achieved a great success. After reading this article, I wondered how Korea was able to achieve “the miracle of Han(river)” as many scholars and experts claim and conducted a small research regarding to this issue. I believe South Korea was mostly developed by Park Jung Hee, the former president of Korea and the father of current president. Major cities in Korea were developed in his tenure. Park initiated the Five-Year Economic Development Plan and the New Village Movement(경제 5주년 계획, 새마을운동) to develop South Korea as an export leading country. He encouraged establishing new firms near the city and motivated the rural citizens to work in cities, which currently located majorly on Gyeong-gi area and Seoul. As a matter of fact, this is the time frame when the urban population exceeded to that of rural areas. People moved to Seoul and Gyeong-Gi area under his initiative in search of better living condition and to be satisfied with their economic needs. Moreover, he has developed a highway ranging from Busan to Seoul, a linkage between two major cities in Korea. Due to this highway, Korea was able to achieve a great success through rapid movement of ideas and products. Moreover he constructed eight more highways to strengthen the connection between cities and due to this highway Korea was able to reach Han River. Lastly, he was interested on the environment issue as well. Due to the massive logging under Japanese colonial rule, many cities in Korea were......

Life in North Korea

...Hello everyone, I would like to talk to you about the humanitarian crisis in North Korea. Kim Jong Il imposes a totalitarian rule over the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea or the D.P.R.K. for short. The DPRK is what north Korean’s refer to when mentioning their country. This is ironic because they are far from being democratic and they have absolutely no say in their government elections. The Kim family has ruled for generations and wins one hundred percent of the time because North Korea does not allow any political opposition. The people are isolated and are completely cut off from the outside world. According to a North Korean world article, North Koreans practice collective punishment. This means that if you go against Kim Jong Il in any way, not only will you get in trouble but the rest of your entire family will be punished. There is evidence about the political prisons that say death rates are extremely high. Grandchildren to grandparents have been sent to prison camps. Guards who have defected have reported being specifically told by Kim Jong Il that the prisoners are not people and should be treated as such. They are never meant to be released and their history is erased as soon as they enter. Although North Korea denies any of these camps exist. This is a humanitarian crisis and there is evidence that they are committing crimes against humanity. Kim Jong Il and his government should be held accountable. We CANNOT sit back and allow this to go on. Satellite......

Korea

...South Korea Essay Korea is known as the “Land of the Morning Calm.” This expression comes from the beginning of the modern history of Korea. Koryo means “high” and “clear.” This word symbolizes the clear blue sky of Korea. The beautiful nature of Korea is expressed through this ancient name. The beginning of Korean history started from 2333 B.C. The Korean peninsular adjoins China and Japan. Korea was conquered by Japan and divided into South and North Korea at the end of World War II. The Korean War caused devastating damage to Korea. However, it should be noticed that despite frequent foreign invasions, the Korean Peninsula has been under a single government while maintaining its political independence, culture and ethnic heritage. Not that long ago, South Korea was one of Asia’s economic success stories – one of the region’s hungry “tigers” looking around for new markets to conquer. Seoul, its capital, modernized in a very rapid amount of time to accommodate the needs of business travelers and has brought the country’s colorful traditions and trademark tranquility. The unique elements of culture The population of the Korean Peninsula, sharing a common language, ethnic identity, and culture, was one of the world’s most homogeneous. Although there were significant regional differences even within the relatively small land area of South Korea, neither the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) nor South Korea had significant non-Korean ethnic......
