Abstract
Forces of demand and supply are changing the dynamics of the higher education market. Transformation of institutions of higher learning into competitive enterprise is underway. Higher education institutions are seemingly under intense pressure to create value and focus their efforts and scarce funds on activities that drive up value for their respective customers and other stakeholders. Porter’s generic ‘value chain’ model for creating value requires that the activities of an organization be segregated in to discrete components for value chain analysis to be performed. Date: November 7, 2014 I. Introduction Higher education is crucial to economic prosperity; it serves as the essential final step for students advancing through our state education system. The skills of a state workforce have grown progressively more important over the last three decades, with increasing educational completion correlated strongly with higher wages. Additionally, a recent study from Georgetown University revealed that approximately 62 percent of jobs will require some form of college education by the year 2018 compared to the mere 28 percent in 1973.1 Nevertheless, regardless of the evidence that college and higher education are essential to our future, Massachusetts has eliminated hundreds of millions of dollars from public higher education funds in recent years. When state support for the university and community college systems is reduced the students in those universities are forced to pay higher tuition and fees. With increasing costs, the amount of money a student must take out in loans also rises. Public higher education funding has suffered numerous dramatic cuts over the past decade. State spending on higher education, including funding for the UMass system, Community Colleges as well as State Universities has declined 31 percent from 2001 to 2013. Although......

...MOOCs as the Remedy for Higher Education Abstract Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have recently developed into a popular topic of discussion in higher education forum. Undeniably there are a lot of problems existing in current mode of traditional higher education such as affordability, quality and flexibility. This paper will argue that MOOCs serve as a remedy to address the problems of higher education. 1) MOOCs are made to be affordable to every student who would like to learn, resolving the affordability of higher education; 2) MOOCs initiated interactive classes through various technological applications, to enhance the quality of class learning; 3) MOOCs allow for flexibility to cater to people with different needs or difficulties. Overall, despite some of the limitations, MOOCs could still serve as a remedy to resolve some problems with current higher education but they are certainly not a replacement of traditional higher education. The technology boom has led to a new trend in higher education – MOOC mania. A Massive Open Online Course, by definition of Tamar Lewin in his “Universities Abroad Join Partnerships on the Web”, is an online course for large-scale interactive participation and open access via the web. Many share the opinion that college is the way to go for success in this ultra competitive world, but on the other hand there are some who believe college may not be for everyone. The articles similarly talk about how college is the best choice for one’s success in the future; however, the two articles differ in their overall messages they are trying to convey to the reader. Mike Rose’s focus is to make the readers who are potential college students think about college as a strong option. Rose uses his own personal life experiences, along with specific facts about education to paint a picture of how higher education is a viable option. On the other hand, Lawrence uses a more direct and sterile approach to convince her audience, of educational professionals, to focus on teaching specific abilities to their students. Studies showed that 1.7 million children in grades K-8 attends before and after school program that offers tutoring (Mahoney, Parente & Zigler, 2009). Many years ago, children were required to work. Education was not important as it is today. My grandmother, who is 86 years old, told stories to us about not having to go to school; instead she had to work to help support her family at an early age (8 years old). Several groups worked together to end child labor. As a result of ending child labor force; after school programs were started. The traditional family role and structure where the father works and the mother’s job was to stay at home and take care of the home and the children. This traditional family no longer existed. Both parents had to work to support the family which led to afterschool/tutoring services. Participation in afterschool programs are steadily growing each and every day. Parents choose to participate in afterschool programs for tutoring and mentoring their children, improving grades, teaching test strategies or just to have a safe place to go after school.
