How Knowledge, Abilities, Values, and Ethics Impact Success

A popular question in today’s world is how professional values and ethics can impact success. To understand it better, let us take a deeper look into this question. In life, we will come across many people who believe that possessing strong values and ethics is unnecessary and has little impact on his or her quality of life, or in their business dealings. Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page are two people who do not share that belief. Their values and ethics have not only impacted their success, but it has also impacted those who have worked both with them and for them. Sergey and Larry are two guys that come from two different walks of life, Sergey a Moscow, Russia native and Larry an East Lansing, Michigan native. Yet they have many similarities. Both, Sergey and Larry’s fathers were college professors, and they both had a passion for computer science, and that passion consistently drove their values and ethics. The two met at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where they were both enrolled in Stanford’s PhD program. Shortly after the two met they collaborated on a research project. That 1996 paper, "Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hyper textual Web Search Engine," became the basis for the Google search engine (“Encyclopedia of World Biography,” n.d.).
Values and Ethics Sergey and Larry’s search engine, at the time “PageRank,” named after Larry Page became a big hit with students at Stanford after they let students try it out. Both, Brin and Page were reluctant entrepreneurs. They did not want to give up their PhD. studies, and join the dot-com era. With their search engine in high demand Sergey and Larry realized that they had something real. They initially started their company just to defray costs. To pay off their credit card debt Sergey and Larry had the idea to…...

How Values and Ethics Influence Career Success

...How values and ethics influence career success? Values reflect a person’s sense of right and wrong or what “ought to be done. Values tend to influence attitude and behavior. Ethics represent morality, integrity, and character, “What will she do to get what she wants?” “Treat people with respect and kindness.” Good values and professional ethics are needed to be a success in a business. People begin to understand, respect, and trust your word when you have solid values and ethics. When employers know that you can be trusted, you become the person to look to, the person that is the leader of the team, and also recognized by higher management in that company. Professional Ethics brings a diligent work pattern and good values bring positivity to the success of the company and a career. According to (Mystic Madness: A Blog to Change the Way You Think, 2009) “Professional values and ethics are the principles which help us determine our actions and conduct in any given profession.” Values and ethics becomes a part of our professional lives the moment we become career oriented and also the moment we step into our career. For example, when becoming a doctor, the first thing read is the Medical Code of Conduct (the doctor’s “values and ethics”) there are hospital morals and the self-morals that a doctor must uphold. HIPAA would be an example of the doctor’s code of conduct. It is the privacy of the patient’s medical history between the doctor and the patient. The patient......

Because of the field they are working in, they are supposed to perform certain responsibilities that will affect their credibility. Together with these responsibilities there is a great impact in the personality of a professional Engineer if it is incorporated with Christian values. Christian values are teachings from the life of Jesus and Christian life. It helps us to be aware if our acts are favorable in His sight. These act as guides towards righteousness of an individual. How Organizational Policies and Procedures Can Impact Ethics.

...How organizational policies and procedures can impact ethics. Organizational policies and procedures are very important for every company. They communicate to all members of an organization what is considered right and wrong, creating order and harmony among the workplace. These rules guide an organization. Most companies, especially the large ones, have a formal, systematic policy to promote ethical behavior. These efforts, called corporate ethics programs, are designed to make employees aware what is ethical and unethical and also to encourage them to follow the moral practices. Typically, ethical policies and procedures involve components like a code of ethics, ethics training, ethics audits, and ethics committees. (Greenberg, 2011, pp. 56-57) The integrated ethical policies and procedures can be effective; however, it is not easy. High ethical standards require both, businesses and individuals, to conform to some moral principles which often involves compromises or trade-offs (Ferrell, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2011, p.7). Nevertheless, it has been found that in companies which have organizational policies and procedures according to ethics the employees are more likely to report the ethical misconduct to the company’s leaders, are considered as more accountable for ethical abuses and face less pressure in finding the middle ground with the standards of business conduct (Greenberg, 2011, p. 58). Likewise, another studies show also that the ethical policies are......

It is about doing the job to your fullest potential and advancing in your field. But in order to do that you have to constantly gain more professional knowledge and abilities. Meaning you have to learn more and be able to do more. Going to college and getting a degree is a great start, but in order to be successful you can’t let it stop there. These things will be outdated in a few months and you will have to learn to work something else. The same thing applies to work. In order for business to grow it has to change and adapt to the world. And as much as we would like to keep up with the newest development in our field, life gets in the way. We have responsibilities such as work, family, community involvement, and finances that don’t allow us to go back to school every time something changes. This is where membership in a professional association comes in handy. They help to keep members up to date on current events in their field. Values in Ethics

...Values and Ethics: The Gateway to Career Success History in business has taught many lessons on how ethics and values, or lack thereof can transform an industry. The breakdown of values and ethics coupled with the lure of wealth and power among some business leaders has proven to be a recipe for failure. The highly publicized scandals in business ethics have accentuated the necessity for universities to prepare students to become ethically responsible leaders (Booth, 1995). In society, understanding and practicing the concepts of ethics and values is a component of success. In order for an organization to ensure an untarnished reputation for its ethical practices it must take a stance on developing a code of conduct for employees and managers to abide. In doing this, the organization must look at all contributing factors to ensure quality and a standard for the code of conduct. Each individual can maintain his or her own integrity to succeed in his or her careers. Positive role models who conscientiously follow their values and ethics are successful in their careers and have a beneficial effect on society. Values and ethics differ between cultures. Values are defined as a set of ideas concerning behavioral traits that are agreed upon either socially acceptable or not. These values are the cornerstone on which an individual’s decision making process hinges. Individuals armed with a good set of moral values tend to make more ethical decisions. Ethics are the questions......
