How to Reduce Staff Turnover and Improve Employee Retention in Your Restaurant

...How to Reduce Staff Turnover and Improve Employee Retention in Your Restaurant Hiring great restaurant workers is one thing. Keeping them is an entirely different thing. Most restaurant operators realize that their employees are not typically planning on a long-term career in the food service industry. At least, that is the trend according to research from the National Restaurant Association. Research shows that employee turnover in a sampling of full-service restaurants lingered just over an average of 78% in 1997.1 Almost ten years later, another report showed that employee turnover had risen to a rate of 107% for another sampling of restaurants.2 Although comparisons between these two findings are not direct, the research suggests that employee turnover in the restaurant industry is a growing concern for owners and operators. How to Improve Your Conversational Skills

...have more friends and better chances in life, for they know how to promote their ideas and establish relationships. I am going to inform you about the nature of conversational skills, and then I will give you some practical tips that you may find useful. Conversational skills are special tools that make a conversation go. They are learned and trained to become automatic. They control questions, control feedback; help break the ice during unwanted pauses, give an idea of open-ended questions that drive a conversation, elaborate a theme. They are about shifts to another theme, the use of semantic means, combined body language and verbal speech. Conversational skills make people comfortable while talking to each other. Now, I will give you five ways to improve your conversational techniques. First of all, the speakers should show interest in each other. Healthy curiosity heats up interest. When you ask questions, you intend to be given a response that can drive the conversation. Second, remember that a conversation is a dialogue with well-balanced talking and listening. Skilful speakers monitor themselves, taking control over taking turns. If you get skilled in taking turns, even talking a little, you will perfect your conversational skills. Third, give genuine compliments for the actions the person who you are talking to has done. This appraisal must be specific and will do wonders if followed by a tag question. Fourth, your paralanguage may speak louder than words. Bodily......

...Psychology 101 April 29, 2012 How to improve your memory The three fundamental principles underlying the use of mnemonics are imagination, association and location. 1. Imagination: is used to create and strengthen the associations needed to create effective mnemonics. The more you visualize and imagine situations, the more effectively it is to be recall later. The imagery used in mnemonic can be violent, vivid or sensual as you desire. 2. Association: this method is where you use associations as a memory trick. Some examples are. Linking them using the same color, smell, shape, or feeling. 3. Location: gives a coherent context, which you place information so that it hang together, and a way of separating one mnemonic from another. Here are a few other mnemonics, which might also be helpful. Acrostic, Rhyme & songs, and chunking. 4. How to Improve Teaching Quality

...Quality Management Journal, 6(2), 9-21 (1999). HOW TO IMPROVE TEACHING QUALITY Richard M. Felder Department of Chemical Engineering North Carolina State University Rebecca Brent College of Engineering North Carolina State University An announcement goes out to the faculty that from now on the university will operate as a total quality management campus. All academic, business, and service functions will be assessed regularly, and quality teams will plan ways to improve them. A campus quality director and a steering team are named, with the director reporting to the Provost. All university departments appoint quality coordinators, who attend a one-day workshop on quality management principles and return to their departments to facilitate faculty and/or staff meetings at which quality improvement is discussed. Many faculty members are irate. They argue that TQM was developed by and for industry to improve profits, industry and the university are totally different, and talking of students as "customers" is offensive and makes no sense. They make it clear that they will have nothing to do with this scheme and will view any attempt to compel them to participate as a violation of their academic freedom. What happens then is…practically nothing. Some changes are made in business and service departments, some curricula are revised, and a few instructors make changes in what they do in their classrooms but most go on teaching the way they have always taught. After two or......

Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation, enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish. As simple as communication seems, many of us experience difficulties connecting successfully with others Being fluent in English is important, considering it is the universal language of business communication. For those looking to improve their skills, here are a few tips. 1: Listen 2: Read 3: Improve Your vocabulary 4: Prepare for small talk 5: Make mistakes 1: Listen Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. How well you listen has a major impact on your job effectiveness, and on the quality of your relationships with others. We listen to obtain information. We listen to understand. We listen for enjoyment. We listen to learn. Given all this listening we do, you would think we'd be good at it! In fact most of us are not. Depending on the study being quoted, we remember between 25% and 50% of what we hear. That means that when you talk to your boss, colleagues, customers or spouse for 10 minutes, they pay attention to less than half of the conversation. This is dismal! Turn it around and it reveals that when you are receiving directions or being presented with information, you aren't hearing the whole message either. You hope the important parts are......

How to Improve Your Style When Surfing

...take a good surfer and make him great. Recently, we rang up one of today’s the most stylish surfers, Craig Anderson, to get his take on what constitutes a good style and what it’s going to take for you to start improving yours. Remain Calm: Although the different elements that constitute a good style are often difficult to define, above all, poise and a sense of casual carelesness in conditions of consequence are paramount. “To me, good style is about being in tune with the ocean, timing, nonchalance, vision, and just being relaxed,” says Anderson. If your surfing can make light of backbreaking conditions, you’re already building a solid foundation to becoming a more stylish surfer. According to Anderson, it’s all about simply giving the appearance of not struggling. Although it seems like a catch-22, at a fundamental level, it’s about taking the difficult and making it look easy. “Surfing is an art, not a sport. You can’t try too hard, you’ve got to enjoy yourself.” Make It Your Own: Each surfer brings their own subtle nuances to the lineup that inevitably attribute to their own style. Although you can pore over videos of Fanning and Parko, at the end of the day, your own style can never truly mimic someone else’s, and it’s important to relish in your individuality. “Even though I grew up watching surfing vids a bunch when I was younger and I always had my favorite surfers to watch, I dont think I ever really tried to copy them,” says Ando. “I don’t think it’s really......
