...The Laws and Acts of Human Resources There are many laws and acts in human resources. In the following paragraphs I will define and explain each one. I will also choose two that I believe are most important and explain why I chose them. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed in to law on July 26, 1990 and it prohibits discrimination and guarantees equal opportunity and access for all persons with disabilities. There are five titles included in this act. The first title requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities and prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in all parts of employment. The other titles cover areas such as public services, public accommodations and telecommunications. The Family Medical Leave Act is a law that provides employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid and job-protected leave from their job. There are times when employees must take time off such as for the birth of a newborn, care of a newborn, adoption of a child etc,. Under The Family Medical Leave Act the employer is required to give an employee their exact job or a similar job as they had prior to leave. The pay and benefits are also required to be the same. Age discrimination is when an applicant or employee is treated differently because of their age. The Age Discrimination Act prohibits discrimination against persons over the age of forty and restricts mandatory retirement requirements, except where age is a...

Human Resources, Week 7

...Like all areas of Human Resources, Training and Development is very important. As Merry Tidwell suggested, training-needs analysis would be a great idea. Figuring who needs training is a great place to start because without good, well-trained employees, the company will suffer. In my current job, since I am new and moldable, I was asked to help retrain other employees with better work habits. Since I have been training my fellow employees, business has been doing better. As Kendall Gailbreath suggested, companies should offer a paid vacation each year. We are, in fact, the only first world country that doesn’t have the required 6 week vacation annually. Choosing their starting pay can be really tricky, but if it is weighed against how much time off is available, and then the employees would choose what they prefer: the pay or the time off. I think letting employees chose what benefits they receive at reasonable costs is a great way to keep your employees. My father-in-law used to work for a company that not only paid him handsomely, but also sent him and his colleagues on annual trips. They sent them to Reno every year to go to business conferences but also to go play. Of course, not everyone was able to go, only the ones that were stellar employees could go. Having the right training and the right incentive programs for employees are a couple of great ways to get employees to do the best they can for the company. Sometimes these can make or break a company. If employees......

...Human Resources The French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said “a goal without a plan is just a wish”. Today’s presentation summarizes Health System’s plan for implementing a formal performance appraisal system for each employee, both individually and as part of a team, as well as outlines our strategy for implementing an organization-wide succession plan to fully maximize our use of human resources. As you were briefed at the last Board Meeting, our most recent employee survey revealed that many of our employees reported not receiving regular performance evaluations and expressed concerns about a perceived lack of a formal evaluation system, as well as no structured approach for assessing team performance. This feedback was troubling in many regards, as this translates into lower-than-expected employee satisfaction scores across the organization, and human resource metrics such as these are indicative of an organization’s health and viability. As emphasized in a recent business article, “Employee engagement is quickly becoming a critical success factor for competitive advantage” (Maximizing Human Capital, 2012). Human resources is also referred to as human capital and is the “collective knowledge, skills and abilities of people that contribute to organizational success”, which can be leveraged to promote value and optimize company performance (Lockwood, 2006). Measurement of human capital is a measure of effective human resource management, and a recent......

...The Best of Many Worlds: Human Resources in the Singapore Business Environment A Regional Research Report Prepared By Salman Khan, Carly Rae Jepsen, Psy and Anita Mui S P Jain School of Global Management Global BBA Program, Singapore April 3, 2012 Executive Summary Human Relations: The department or support systems responsible for personnel sourcing and hiring, applicant tracking, skills development and tracking, benefits administration and compliance with associated government regulations. (Entrepreneur.com) The human resources (HR) role is becoming increasingly important in the business world. Human resources includes the combination of traditionally administrative personnel functions with performance management, employee relations, and resource planning. The field draws upon concepts developed in industrial/organizational psychology. In the past, HR personnel did a lot of administrative work. This is changing with the global shift to service-based industries. As the role evolved, HR practitioners wanted to become business partners and actually engage more in the organization’s core business. At present, we see the function of HR going beyond being that of just a business partner to being at the forefront and, in some instances, heading business initiatives (Jones, 2012). We became interested in the field of HR for several reasons. One, it offers an attractive area of employment for business students. Also, it requires a good mix of......

Human Resources Management Homework Week 1

...Human Resources Management Homework Week 1 Chapter 1 Question 1 I do think people are an organization's most valuable assets because people bring human capital to the organization. One would think that nowadays in times with so much technology, we would not need people as much in a company, but the truth is that without people a company or organization would not be able to succeed. Human capital is one of the most valuable assets a company could have. Having good employees and investing in them will ensure a company will keep growing and succeeding. The primary reason for the need of people in an organization is that, people are the fuel of an organization to run, maintaining the organization's structure and so forth. Without people, an organization will not exist and will never accomplish their function. Then, numerous grounds can be linked to the importance of human capital. (Becker) I also think that cultural diversity could be an asset to an organization because each person brings unique experiences and perceptions. Each employee in a diverse workplace possesses unique strengths, knowledge and skills derived from their culture, and when managed properly it can influence the strengths and complement the weakness of each worker to make a greater workforce. Chapter 2 Question 2 Some of the forces that influence a firm's strategy are the company's rival, new entrants, substitutes, and supplies. The......

And much like real-estate agents do “comps” that survey property values, O*Net would let me know if the salaries of current employees are on par with the average in my state.. O*Net can also be helpful in writing advertisements or other copy containing job listings, as they will have in them some form of a job description, which is the overall guidelines that tell an employee what is expected of them. For each job, it gives typical tasks, tools & technology the applicant must know how to use, the knowledge needed, the skills needed and typical work activities.
