When I started writing this paper I was going to just talk about books and reading Then I got sidetracked so this paper is more about books vs. the computer and books and the computer combined as learning tools.

Reading is very important to enrich a person's life. If you can read you can learn anything. You can go anywhere, be anyone, do anything. Books can open a world to the past, the present and the future. They can also take you to fantasy lands that never existed in the real world. Through books you can experience what it is like to be an explorer, you can go to the moon and outer space, you can live with cavemen, you can experience what it was like to be a pirate in the 1600s. You can give yourself an entire college education with the books that can be found in any public library. For an example John Aristotle Phillips was born in 1955 in Connecticut. In 1976, while attending Princeton University as a junior undergraduate, he designed a nuclear weapon using publicly available books and papers. Books are very cheap entertainment. Used books can be purchased for a dollar or less. Many famous people learned things from books rather than in a structured educational environment.

Today you can use the internet to enhance your reading experience. I have read several books that led me to the internet because I wanted to know more about some of the things or people mentioned in the books. Other times I have written down words I didn't know the meaning of and looked them up on the internet for my own education and to improve my vocabulary. Several years ago I read Almost Adam by Petru Popescu and Neanderthal by John Darnton. One of the books mentioned a Sherpa guide and I googled him to see if it he was an actual person. He was and when he died in an accident a few years later and I saw his name in the news I knew who he was. Sometimes when I'm reading and I go on…...

...The Importance of Reading I had an epiphany about reading and it changed my life. It was a day only several years ago when I first realized the numerous benefits I could realize from reading. Of course, I had been told all my life that reading was important. I was forced to do it in class after class beginning in elementary school and on up through high school. I had never read for enjoyment, had never gone to a book store and surveyed the stacks of tomes with pleasure, had never been to the library except when it was required for researching a particular assignment. To me reading was drudgery, a chore which interfered with more important things in life, like eating and sleeping. It wasn’t until I took an English class in my senior year, however, that the importance of reading finally penetrated my brain. I realized my teacher for that English class, Mrs. Smith, was different from others I’d had in the past from the first day I walked into her classroom. While she looked like a typical, older lady with her graying hair and pair of wire-rimmed reading glasses continually perched on the end of her nose, it was her attitude that set her apart from other instructors. From her roost atop a stool at the front of the room, Mrs. Smith ruled the classroom with short legs swinging to and fro above the rungs while her arms – complete with flabby “schoolteacher arm” – would wave about to lend emphasis to her words. Mrs. Smith could tell I was uncomfortable in......

...University of Phoenix Material Reading Comprehension Worksheet Respond to the following in 50 to 100 words each: 1. Describe your outcome from this week’s MyFoundationsLab® assignment. I received a master’s score on this weeks “MyFoundationsLab”. I found the material helpful and insightful because it taught me ways to become a better student by improving my study scores. I mostly enjoyed the video parts of it because I feel like I learn the most from them and they are not as boring as always reading the information. 2. Identify the skills you’ve learned this week. How could each of these apply to your academic work? How could each of these apply to your professional work? The skills that I learned from this week that I can apply to both my academic work and professional work are taking notes as I read important material, and how to understand and remember information. Taking good notes will help me in my academics because it will help me put the main points in my reading material in my own words while creating a short version of a study guide for myself. This also helps in a work setting because if I learn something new I can take short hand notes to help me remember all the important aspects of the job. Along with writing the notes I also have to make myself understand the information and retain it. This is the most important skill for me because I often forget things shortly after learning it. When I improve this skill I will be able to recall more......

...1 9/25/2013 I was exposed to reading at a young age. My earliest reading memory was my mother reading Dr. Seuss books to me when I was four or five. I used to enjoy seeing the pictures in the books more then I liked being read too. I also use to enjoy watching the characters in the books on television. As a kid I was in love with talking animals. I thought that was the coolest thing in the world. The Arthur series was a big influence growing up. I remember one Christmas I got a stack of Arthur books and I was the happiest kid in the world. That whole week my mother would help me read the books and then I would watch the show on television right after. As I grew older, I started to enjoy reading horror books. I also liked horror films and I think that influenced what I liked to read. I really liked the Goosebumps series and could read them all day. I prefer to read about things that interest me. It’s hard for me to read something that doesn’t have my interest. In high school, I rarely read about something that interested me. At a young age, my grandmother would tell me stories about how she grew up in the south and how different the country was as a kid. She would tell me about how segregated it was and all about the civil rights movement and how it was a big part of her childhood. Hearing these stories that my grandmother would tell me made me want to learn more about the civil rights era in the south. A lot of things influenced me to read. When I read, I like to learn......

Retelling is the ability to read or listen to a story, then summarize it in paraphrased form. Children begin learning the basics of retelling in kindergarten where teachers start to informally assess the students' overall understanding of a story. Retelling is a useful assessment tool throughout school because it can measure simple to advanced comprehension, as well as help the students improve their listening and speaking skills. Instructions 1. Review retelling strategy. Model it again for those who may struggle. Read a short story aloud to the class, then summarize the important details in the correct sequence. Write each summarizing statement on chart paper. Number the statements so students understand how to retell in the order that events happened. 2. Choose an instructional level text, like a short story from a reading book or a chapter from a novel, that is leveled for......

...draw, some write. others blast music. I, on the other hand, read. Because what better way is there to escape the world than to than to jump into another one. Reading gives us a place to go when we want to stay where we are. I like reading because it's like dreaming. Going on an adventure, living a different life, experiencing new things. I love reading and I love my books, their tattered covers, the well-thumbed pages, the intoxicating smell and the smooth feel of the spine. They are my friends, my companions. And book collection is an obsession, an occupation, a disease, an addiction, an absurdity, a fate. It's not just a hobby. My books are my treasure, my gateway to flights of fancy, realms of magic. Open the cover and you fall in. Into the Tartarus of a imagination, of magic. I have just one life but Fiction and Fantasy help me live many. But there's a problem with fiction. It makes too much sense, reality never does. Novels are just for entertainment, they say. You'll never really learn anything from them, they say. But to be honest, there are things the books have taught me my school never could. I sometimes wish I could read in the shower. Also in the dark. Also in my sleep. It sounds like an overstatement but there are times when I find a really good book I can't put down and I read it late into the night and only stop because my eyes start to hurt or my vision goes blurry from either strain or sleep and I have to force myself to put......

How I Got Smart Reading Response

...Murphree 09 September 2014 How I Got Smart Reading Response This article’s title says it all. It is a story about how a guy got smart. In the first few paragraphs, the author talks about how students view teachers as bookworms who would study a lot rather than playing and end up to be a teacher anyway. He mentions that he tried to explain that the image that they are picturing during his adolescence is wrong. He hated compulsory education with a passion. I believe that the author’s argument is that everyone is smart in their own way. He argues that he did not get smart by the way most of the students would assume right away that just because ones a teacher, then they have been a book worm and just studied a lot during their adolescence. This is why the author told a story about an experience that changed his life. An experience on how he got smart and this is because of a girl named Debbie. Just like a typical high school student, he fell in love with Debbie at first sight and since she was an intelligent lady, the author felt obliged to be intelligent as well to impress her. Though the storyline ended as the incentive being gone because the author just got led on by Debbie, he says that “Having savored the heady wine of knowledge, I could not now alter my course”. Reading this article made me think how we all have different backgrounds on why who we are now and how we all have our own ways on how we become who we are and what we are. I believe that everybody is smart......

This I Believe Reading Response

...Amanda K. Parker English 098 O. Ogo This I Believe Reading Response September 29, 2014  “The Best Education in the World” about parenthood By, Jeff Sloan As heard on The Bod Edwards Show, May 24, 2013 This story is about a man becoming a father. He told about his beliefs as a family and parent. He also talks about if he’s ready for the responsibility of becoming a parent. And what it’s like 16 years later becoming a father to three children. “And after all these years I believe I still have a lot to learn as a father, but it’s the best education in the world.” Something that really made me think was how Jeff Sloan stated that he wasn’t sure if he was really ready for that responsibility that he held in his hand. No one really is ready for the responsibility of being a parent no matter if it’s your first child or your child. Each child is different and each way you handle each child varies. They all shape and motor lines and beliefs in different ways. This story reminds me a lot about myself. I had three children by the time I was 24 years old. Your life changes domestically that moment that you hold your child for the first time. Your core beliefs and priorities change in that instant. The miniature person that you’re holding is now your entire life and making the responsible choice in changing your life. We learn every day for our children more than what they know they teach us....

...WHAT IS READING At a very tender age, when I first learned to read words, I was excited because I was now a reader but was I really reading or just lifting words off paper? Even though this is necessary for reading, reading is more complex than just recognizing words. The reader has to make sense of the words base and their context. While engaged in reading, the prior knowledge is activated along with personal connection, ideas, and opinions. Unfortunately, children will develop reading problems if they do get the necessary stills that will allow them to function on a higher level and succeed in life. Jennings, Caldwell and Lerner (2010) mentioned that it is said that “Children must learn to read so that later they can read to learn” (pg. 4). Therefore reading is the foundation that children need to be successful in life.  Jennings, Caldwell and Lerner (2010) advised that to help children read better and develop a love for reading, fall on the laps of the teaching professionals since they are the planner and implementation of instructional services (pg. 3). It is understandable that even though there are different levels of readers, the ultimate goal is for teachers to create good readers in children. Jennings, Caldwell and Lerner (2010) iterate that reading is making sense of text. The reader generates his or her own mental version of what is been read (pg. 13). In my field experience, I have seen children who could read any word off paper but had no opinion of what is......

I Belive

...I believe love is meant to be. Ill have always taken my relationship seriously. I can say my first relationship has thought me many things. Its crazy falling in love with the person you least expected. I'm currently in a relationship that I'm learning every day. When I was 16 I met the man who I can now call my fiancé and the father of our beautiful baby boy. One day back in the summer of 2008, I was at my father house in Southbridge. It was a nice sunny day ,you can hear the birds chirping and wind was brushing through my hair. That day my father was waiting on my sister and her friends because they were going to buy a car piece. My sister pulled up with her friends OJ and his cousin. All I got to said to him that day was "hi" and that was it. Who was to know that five years later. I was going to bump into him again. I went to my friends house in Waltham and he was their outside with his friends. That night we all decided to go the bar. He knew how to make me laugh and he was such a gentlemen. To me love is out there for everyone especially for those who believe and hope for it. At times you can have the one of your life in front of you and not even realize it. That chance of truly being happy sometimes slides right through people hands. I knew what I have when he showed me what type of man he is. he is a great husband and a great father. you have to give your all and go through the hardest things to get the best in return. To care and give your all is one way to express......

...with the following statement? Reading comic books is bad for children. Use specific details and examples to support your answer. I disagree with this statement.  Children can learn something from comic books. So, as long as children don’t spend too much time reading comic books, comic books could be good for them. I think reading books is good for children, but some children don’t like reading books. However, some of these children like reading comic books. It would be difficult for children who are not accustomed to reading texts to start reading books. An elementary level class of government employees (age range 17-42) was exposed to a regime of graded readers, which was integrated into normal classroom teaching. Students followed a class reader, had access to a class library of graded readers, and had classes in the British Council library, which gave them access to a collection of 2000 titles. Questionnaires were used to examine students' reading interests, habits and attitudes, both prior to, and following the program. The class library contained 141 titles in the published readers of some major......
