HR 587: Managing Organizational Change

Introduction Winston Churchill, (British Orator, Author, and Prime Minister during World War II) stated, “There is nothing wrong with change, if it’s in the right direction.” I have unfortunately found that some of the “change” I have experienced within my current and previous employment, has often led the organization in a direction that was not beneficial to the organization and its’ employees. This concept, however, is what we experience as being a strategic change initiative. A change initiative is something that will occur within an organization when a particular situation and/or routine needs to be improved. It requires cross-functional support, and the results can negatively or positively affect the organization. The planning and results of change are often determined by the six key images concepts. These images include the director, navigator, caretaker, coach, interpreter, and nurturer, and the role of these images are crucial when implementing change. The director tends to be in control and is viewed as one who had the idea of acquiring a particular result. They are the visionaries and driving force behind the change that is needed to occur. The navigator is one who can steer a particular change in a direction when occurrences happen that are unforeseen, and produce a result. The caretaker image is one that will continue to lead and support their organization, despite the uncontrollable factors that may continue to exist causing a change initiative to fail. The coach image is valuable in shaping behaviors and leading the organization to acquire a harmonious set of values and skills, which will lead to a positive result. As Twenge states, “The society that molds you when you are young stays with you the rest of your life” (Twenge 2). The images hold true to Twenge’s statement. Generation Me has evolved into an all about me society. The first image is that of a young, white, obese male walking through a crowded area. The young man is wearing a brown shirt with the phrase, “I’M #1 SO WHY TRY HARDER” printed front and center where everyone can notice. The second image has an older man, possibly in his sixties, dressed in a navy suit and blue tie and carrying a brown leather brief case. The older man is looking at a younger man in his twenties. The younger man is wearing a black suit jacket, casual striped button up shirt unbuttoned at the top, and jeans. Instead of a brief case, the younger man is holding a yellow binder along with a manila folder in one hand and a smart phone in the other. The images show GenMe’s focus on self. The younger men in each image are part of a generation that has grown up encouraged to focus on self, when maybe instead the focus should have been on personal health, respect for others, and having a positive impact on society. ...Part One: For the image depicting Metonymy I have chosen figure 1. Figure 1 is a photograph of a man in Madrid walking in front of a billboard advertisement featuring a pair of large eyes all the while he is doing something with his mobile device. This image greatly depicts the recent allegations of the NSA’s screening of foreign and domestic cell phone users both citizens or not. This image greatly reminds me of the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, in the Great Gatsby, who were ever watchful over its characters. The eyes represent the NSA ever watching what you are saying and doing and having been photographed abroad it depicts this is and international problem. For the image depicting Synecdoche I have chosen figure 2. Figure 2 is an image of a jogger in the wintertime battling the elements to remain in health and in shape. This image depicts the “Synecdoche proves” part of the rhetorical images. This image would be great for an advertisement wishing to advertise a brand of sports wear like Under Armour or Nike wishing to show its brands durability under harsh climates even for the everyday person. The scenery looks as though it could be in your neighborhood, assuming you’re in a part of the world that gets heavy snow. And the runner looks like your average Jane or Joe so that you could feel as though with this brand you too could conquer the element in their sportswear and also gets into shape no matter the time of the year. ...getting “wasted”. This has become a common stigma about college, and binge drinking has become a serious problem on all U.S. college campus. In an attempt to bring awareness of consequences of binge drinking Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board released a series of Public Service Announcements and launched a website to educate its target young audience to be careful while drinking. The public service announcements use very specific image and text placement, typography, and color to make their message evident in the still PSAs. In general when a person looks at something they scan left to right, top to bottom, or at least primarily in English speaking areas, as that is how we read. With this being so, the first things our eyes sees is (what appears to be) a young woman’s bare legs, slightly separated from knee down, and her underwear around her ankles. She is placed in a vulnerable looking position on a bathroom floor to express the terrible act that just happen. This image is large and takes up most of the ad’s space. The designer of this clearly wants the image to be seen as important and a driving point in the PSA. However, what appears to be the most important are the words that are farther right on the ad, but cover part of the girl’s legs. The work so far gives an in depth discussion on the actions of two change managers as they relate to the six images of change. In this regard two change managers were interviewed and both of them are in the retail business entity. For convenience, they are labeled as Change manager A and B of A and B companies respectively. The responses of both change managers were compared and contrasted to make this assessment. Based on the responses of the mangers in question it was clearly evident that they were using the images unconsciously. The actions and approaches they adopted to augment change in their respective organizations show that they were implementing change influenced by the images. The company of Manager A is a well established business on a larger scale unlike that of Manger B which is a small grocery store. In the interviews both managers told their stories regarding change in their respective organizations. In the case of Manager A, he said it was a kind of transformational change that took place in his organization. Comparing the two advertisements shows the effective type of advertising that Nike used in two different time periods.
