I feel as though I have spent a life time working in restaurants and I have in fact put in my due time, almost ten years in various restaurant positions. I have worked counter-service, I have waited tables at fast paced casual restaurants, I have done catering and fine dining restaurants and I’ve also managed restaurants as well as a retail store. The great thing about restaurants is the fact that you learn very quickly how to deal with a variety of people in a variety of ways and keep your cool while doing so. I think my tenure in the service industry has taught me invaluable skills towards being a good manager and learning how to communicate with people, which I believe is a large part of being a successful manager. The thing with the restaurant business is that you never know what you’re about to walk into. Whether it’s a customer walking in the door and you somehow lost their reservation, or a customer is unhappy with their dinner or the wait, or your waiting on a table that just came from a funeral; all of these individual issues need to be handled with a different approach and a different “hat” so to speak. I always felt that I enjoyed interacting with people so closely because it gave me joy to bring them a good experience and this is how I tried to look at managing. I felt that it was my responsibility to make my employees enjoy working for me and in return I felt that I could ask them to perform better for my bosses. I still believe that respecting your employees and encouraging them to feel invested in the business is key to running a successful company.
