The Importance of Writing

Writing can easily be classified as one’s freedom to express themselves clearly and confidently. In society, the use of script to define a subject or a though is used on a daily basis. It is utilized in offices, schools, newspapers, even technology these days. Writing comes of great importance to the world for it is our way of communication when words can’t get the job done. Writing is more permanent than words. That being said, one has more time to gather their thoughts and present them in a clear and orderly fashion. Because of the various types of writing there are, one has to thoroughly ponder on how they want their thoughts presented. Alongside this, the audience of whom the writing will be presented to also needs to be considered. It would be completely inappropriate to write a letter in the form of a poem to get a point across congress and vice versa. No matter how well one writes, the genre and style of the writing is always more important. Anyone is capable of writing, but not all are great writers. A true writer composes from the heart with aid from their mind. Every word is processed and handled in such a way that it pinpoints exactly what idea they are trying to present to the reader. Some writings are easier to comprehend than others, and depending on whether it is an open or closed form decides on whether the simplicity of this writing is a good or a bad thing. We use writing as form of art. When one who truly knows how to put pen to paper does so, they can open their audience up to their mind and its process of thought. A world without writing would be much harder to maintain. All history is made in writing, and without it, the only option of learning from the past would be word of mouth, and we all know how badly a game of telephone can…...

...Between the 12th and 19th centuries, feudal Japan had an elaborate four tier class system. Unlike European feudal society, in which the peasants (or serfs) were at the bottom, the Japanese feudal class structure placed merchants on the lowest rung. Confucian ideals emphasized the importance of productive members of society, so farmers and fishermen had higher status than shop-keepers in Japan. At the top of the heap was the samurai class. The Samurai Class: Feudal Japanese society was dominated by the samurai warrior class. Although they made up only about 10% of the population, samurai and their daimyo lords wielded enormous power. When a samurai passed, members of the lower classes were required to bow and show respect. If a farmer or artisan refused to bow, the samurai was legally entitled to chop off the recalcitrant person's head. Samurai answered only to the daimyo for whom they worked. The daimyo, in turn, answered only to the shogun. There were about 260 daimyo by the end of the feudal era. Each daimyo controlled a broad area of land, and had an army of samurai. The Farmers / Peasants: Just below the samurai on the social ladder were the farmers or peasants. According to Confucian ideals, farmers were superior to artisans and merchants because they produced the food that all the other classes depended upon. Although technically they were considered an honored class, the farmers lived under a crushing tax burden for much of the feudal era. During the reign......

The Importance of Writing Well

...Lexington Stephens 3 September 2012 ENGL-109-01 The Importance of Writing Well Possibly the greatest form of interaction with one another is communication. People communicate with each other daily whether it is face to face conversation, facial expressions and body language, or even more so now, electronically and through social media. All are sufficient ways for conveying messages, but certain ideas require an extra intellectual measure. Through precise composition and structure, writing can successfully communicate an individual’s objective. Although writing is a fascinating and important form of communication, an individual must know how to write well in order to creatively and effectively convey information, ideas, and stories. Writing can either make or break a presentation of ideas. Disregarding the topic of a work, a writer’s style has a heavy influence on the audience. A well written article, review, or story can not only entertain and amuse, but persuade or enlighten readers. On the other hand, a poorly written article can leave a negative response to readers, even if the subject is one of importance or prominence. Regarding academic purposes, there are countless reasons to have a foundation of exceptional writing skills beyond just the classroom. It is important to have respectable writing skills while filling out job applications, resumes, official documents, and proper letters. Proper writing techniques can even set an individual apart from others and give...

Writing

...The writing process begins the minute you get a writing assignment—whether you are writing a book, an essay, or a single paragraph. It involves all the activities you do, from choosing a topic to turning in a final draft. The phases, or stages, of the writing process are prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. Prewriting Prewriting refers to all activities that help you explore a subject, generate ideas about it, choose a specific topic, establish a purpose, and analyze the audience for your paragraph or essay. Your mission at this stage is to stimulate your thinking before and during the act of writing. Every time you think of a new idea during the writing process, you are prewriting. Drafting When you have lots of ideas to work with, you are ready to start drafting. Drafting involves writing down your thoughts, developing or expanding some ideas, organizing your thoughts to reflect your purpose, and writing a first version of your paragraph or essay. To start on your draft, you may want to spread out your class notes, journal entries, and other prewriting notes so that you can start to string your ideas together. This is the time to keep your thoughts flowing without worrying too much about grammar, punctuation, mechanics, or spelling. Revising As you may suspect, the process of writing is not finished with your first draft. You should always revise your work to make it stronger and better. Revising involves rethinking your content and organization so that your......

...together a proposal letter for a business, a cover letter for an open job position or even when you want to journal some things so that you read it at a later date. It is with those opportunities that we find our skills have been reduced to LOL, k, brb, tc, cya. Letter writing is important as it reveals something about your personality that a machine can't. Your style of handwriting, choice of ink and paper all say something about you as an individual. Now almost everyone has become too busy so there is no time for anyone to put their words in thoughts. On Writing

...Ashley Eller December 12, 2011 UCWR110-022 Final Reflective Essay On Writing My favorite author and literary genius, Stephen King, in his memoir On Writing wrote, “Write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open.” This is possibly the best piece of advice I could ever think to give to a struggling student with a paper to write. Your first draft is always for yourself and your own personal reflection. In your second draft, “open up the doors” and write for everyone else who will be reading it. Without this solid piece of advice, I don’t think I could have ever expanded on my writing at all. Over the years, my writing career has hit its peak in junior year, and I have plateaued from there. Since being a UCWR student, I have had the chance to expand my range in my writing skills. From this course, I have learned to expand my writing ability to subjects I would never have broached before, allowing myself to heighten my awareness of the world around me as well as hinder my procrastination. In the beginning of the year, I was very disappointed I would have to take this course. From my previous experience with accelerated English and rhetoric courses, I felt I would be bored and disappointed with the classroom experience. Over the course of the semester, I have learned I was wrong. While in the beginning my engagement level was poor, I was still interested by the current events brought up in class. Some of the biggest topics we discussed (Occupy Wallstreet, Penn State...

Writing

...drilling rock and then blasting it out with charges.” I agree with Mr. Hemingway. Writing can be easy and enjoyable, or it can be difficult and frustrating. There are times when everything comes together and flows effortlessly and, more often than I would like to admit, there are times when I could pull my hair trying to squeeze out an idea of what to write. Regardless of the headache writing can sometimes be, I am absolutely in love with it. I was not always in love with writing. I was capable of getting assignments like essays, short stories, and poems completed, but not necessarily enjoying the process it took to get there. Everything changed when I took a writing workshop as an elective class in high school. In all honesty, I took the class because I felt as though I was a good enough writer to do well and not have much to worry about. I realized something important in that class, that “good enough” would not be good enough for me anymore. I can remember the exact moment I fell in love with the process of writing. I had an assignment to write a short story, which seemed easy enough. I wrote a quick rough draft about the importance of not drinking and driving. My writing process had always been to write a rough draft that was not very well thought out, to edit a small amount and not much else. I found myself spending more time on that story than I had ever spent on any other piece of writing. I kept editing and changing things until the end result only held a small......

...Iris 05/31/2015 084A Writing in reverse The Principles of Good Writing The average student finds it surprisingly easy to acquire the usual tricks of poor writing. To do a consistently good job, however, one must grasp a few essential principles: 1 Consider the reader. 2 Be concise, clear, and down to earth. 3 Revise Consider the reader Keep your mind between reader and the subject. This is fundamental. Constant and alert consideration of the probable reaction of the reader is a key point to good writing. A logical argument is that if you write good enough, your readers will merit any attention. Consider the reader wherever possible. If the proposed title, for example, means something to you; think further. Similarity, all the way through you must write for readers. Keep your facts and ideas on the different level of emphasis with telltale hints of relative importance or logical sequence. Don’t use long sentences containing many ideas loosely strung together. Do not use and frequently in good writing; because and semicolon appear in good writing. Use transitions in good writing such as moreover, nevertheless and on the other hand. A good sentence begins with the subject or with a phrase that needs emphasis. Don’t hide antecedent or offer wrong antecedent. Consider the reader and use parallel constructions which give the thought away to easily. In every technical paper do not omit a few items that most readers need to know. Use defining symbols:......

Writing

...1130 January 2016 A Writing Experience Writing has never been my forte. At best, I survived the earlier years of my school life with average remarks from English teachers who assessed me. However, due to a lack of confidence in my own writing, English classes became incredibly difficult in my final years of high-school. Attempting to obtain better grades, I recall trying to absorb the almost formulaic method of writing my grade 11 and 12 teachers taught, and applied it. Nevertheless, I understood that this method was clearly not improving anything when I received my mark for the English 12 provincial. Being ill prepared for post-secondary writing is not a situation unique to myself. Rather, it is a common phenomenon for student writers of my generation. As mentioned, many student writers of my generation suffer from the same lack of proper writing education as I did when stepping into the world of post-secondary. In fact, recent studies suggest that the writing process being primed into student writers like myself during high-school is too linear, and fails to prepare them for the level of writing post-secondary schools demand for. This is because student writers are being educated to “separate the writing process into discrete stages” (Sommers 135). Moreover, due to the linear nature of current models of the writing process taught in schools, students tend to write in ways that resemble speech and as a result, neglect an important stage in writing: revision. ......

...Understanding Graduate-Level Writing September 14, 2015 Understanding Graduate-Level Writing To understand graduate-level writing, you must look at the characteristics that make this type of writing different from other types of writing. One of these characteristics is to communicate a specific idea or intended message that is precise and elegantly worded, so the reader will not misunderstand (Beins & Beins, 2012, p. 3). Being misunderstood in any type of writing can be one of the biggest factors in how credible you are and if the message you are conveying will have the impact that is intended to make. As a graduate level writer, your technical vocabulary and phrases will play a vital role for difficult or intricate ideas, which should be conveyed in a short and concise manner (Beins & Beins, 2012, para. 9). That being said graduate-level writing generally follows a specific format that can be understood universally (Beins & Beins, 2012, p. 3). This specific and technical format displays one of the differences between the other forms of writing. Other styles of writing that are less formal usually accommodate the content as well as the artistic style of the text (Beins & Beins, 2012, p. 3). Taking the artistic less formal route for writing will allow the reader to understand the message in a less confusing method for virtually any level of understanding. The technical jargon that graduate-level writings entail seem to be one of the important distinctions...

...1.0: Introduction Writing is one of the most crucial aspects in language learning. It is not an easy task as it seems as writing is actually a process; and it is the teachers’ responsibilities to help students becoming good writers. According to Hedge (2005), writing process consists of four stages that are ‘Composing’, ‘Communicating’, ‘Crafting’ and ‘Improving’ (pp. 17). Therefore, this essay presents the main principles that underlie in activities that assist learners at these different stages in the writing process which is designed by Tricia Hedge in her book, ‘Writing’ (2005). This paper will start with a discussion about the first stage of writing that is ‘Composing’, and continue with another stage which is ‘Communicating’. ‘Crafting’ will be explained next, and finally, the last stage which is ‘Improving’ will be addressed. Additionally, an example of activity will be illustrated in each section. 2.0: Composing Composing is a stage that ‘takes a writer from pre-writing to polishing a final draft for a specific purpose and a particular audience’ (pp. 81). Hedge believes that good writing is often recursive, and not linear where various operations take place simultaneously throughout writing process. There are three main activities in this stage; pre-writing, drafting and redrafting, and editing. In pre-writing, the focus will be mainly on planning the outlines and exploring possible content. The learners will be aided to identify the purpose and the......
